While I'm glad that people have been making more use of the "thumbs up" (reputation) system to give people "skins," I've seen a fair amount of posts given thumbs up which do not meet the criteria laid out in the article :

To hand out positive reputation, which I am encouraging all members to do when they encounter a post that makes a well-reasoned point or goes above and beyond to provide great content, you simply click this button at the bottom of their post: . You'll be prompted to leave a comment - which I strongly encourage everyone to do - and your positive reputation will be added. After you post, your comment and "thumbs up" vote will be available for others to see and a count will be added to the right of the graphic.

You should not click the thumbs up button for posts simply because you agree with them unless they're also a high-quality post. In other words, please do not treat "thumbs up" like Facebook "Likes" or just "thumb up" posts with which you agree or which just make a joke but provide little in the way of content. We're not trying to identify people who think like others, we're trying to use reputation to identify those who post quality content.

For example, these types of posts almost NEVER warrant a thumbs up:

  • A simple posting of a YouTube video.*
  • A one-liner or frankly any post of fewer than 50 words or so.
  • A smartass comment or one that is mean to another person (whether a member or not).
  • A post of nothing but a meme picture as a response to a comment.

Yet all of these have gotten thumbs up in the past few days. I've since deleted the skins I've seen (I'm sure I've missed some).

Here's a clue. If the comment you're strongly encouraged to leave with your thumbs up is of the variety like "I agree" or "haha" or "funny" or something, then it was probably a mistake to click the thumbs up icon.

Reputation and "Skins" don't play a huge role in The Sand Trap, but that's not to say they will never, and I'd urge everyone to be a bit more cautious about doling it out. Simultaneously, I'd like to encourage more people to GIVE reputation to WORTHY posts. Basically, flip the script a little bit - less thumbs up in a "Facebook" like fashion, more to well reasoned, thoughtful posts - even if you disagree with the post, you can value the content and think that the post is "good content."

Thank you.

* One of the exceptions would obviously include a post which contained a video where the video was original content created by the poster.

    • Bryson got hit with a 2 shot penalty, after the round, for improving his lie on hole 5.  Here is a post on X, showing how he stepped on high grass when he was looking down his target line.  When they cut to the side shot, you can see how close he was behind the ball.  I think the R&A probably made the correct decision. You just have to be really careful when you are walking in the high grass, around the ball and where you are to make a swing.

    • Day 27 (17 July 26) - Normally an 18 hole day, but due to commitments abbreviated the round to 9 holes (played the back nine at home course).  Had a solid session where even the worst miss (tee shot off 18) was fully playable.  Shot a solid 39 (6pars, 3bogies) - not dbls, no three putts - just boring golf.
    • Overall, well said. People have to be very careful in trying to describe very complex problem in simple terms. In this case, it is a clear fundamental misunderstanding of Newton's 1st and 3rd laws.  To clarify more on the misinterpretation of Newton's 1st law. The exact interpretation of Newton's 1st Law....  "Every body continues in its state of rest, or of uniform motion in a straight line, unless it is compelled to change that state by forces impressed upon it" yea, a body will stay motionless unless a force acts upon it. An object will stay on its path of motion unless a force acts upon it.  I get it, complex physics problems are difficult. There is a lot of simplification done in most physics class when it is taught. A classic problem uses a frictionless surface. Projectile motion excludes drag and wind direction. Collisions are usually elastic. The golf swing is not a simple physics problem.  Yea, I think they got caught up the data on the graphs and are not truly understanding cause and effect.  If the golfer isn't first pushing into the ground, then the ground isn't going to push back.  The internal forces of the body create the motion, not the external forces from the ground. The ground isn't like what Psy uses to start his concert. 🤣 You probably need to be connected to the ground and have those GRF to help the body produce the motion you want. Your body has to move in the right way to produce the GRF which helps you move the body in the way you want. Body motion precedes the GRF.
