Value for my clubs

I'm new to golf and was recently given my dad's old clubs. They are Titleist DCI's Gold oversize, with stiff flex steel shaft. Every time I play with my buddies who have played for a while they tell me how these clubs are extremely hard to hit. I was looking to get some new clubs but wanted to know if I could even get some trade in value for these clubs. Money isn't exactly flowing in right now. Or should I just stick with these.

Try selling them on Ebay first, you might get more than trading them in. I recently traded in my Odyssey XG Rossie at a local Golf Galaxy last week and was told by the salesman that it was in great condition and should consider selling it on Ebay; he then proceeded to mark it as "good condition" on the trade-in form, so I didn't get the top trade-in value for it.

The pgavalue site always seems off to me. Ive checked out clubs before on there, and then on ebay they sold for a lot more money consistently. My old set of clevelands on pgavalue sold used for $200, but then I sold em for almost $120 more on ebay. So id just say look at Ebay for a good idea of what they go for.

I'm afraid I can't comment on the Titleist clubs you have, but if you are having trouble with them I would recommend trying out used Callaway irons. I have Big Bertha X-12's that I bought new several years ago and they are great clubs for a high handicapper. They are very forgiving clubs, although better players say they lack feel. You can find a set pretty cheap on ebay, but you should definately try before you buy. If you have a Golfsmith or similar store near you they will probably have some used X-12's you could look at.

I think the most important thing is to decide if you are having trouble hitting your current clubs or not.

      I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.

      Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
