As the title says I returned to golf today having not touched a club since August. I am looking for an entire new bag as I still have the Wilson Deep Red package set. What irons would you guys recommend? I hit the range today with my irons, hitting them clean even after months away from the game. My bad shots were a hook. Ideally I'd like irons that have a good feel, workable but still retaining some forgiveness.

I don't really know your skill level, but assuming the handicap you have listed is legit:

  1. Take lessons. Dollar for dollar, you're going to get a lot more out of lessons than a new set of irons. If lessons aren't a possibility because of time or financial constraints, then at least take a look at the 5 Simple Key videos and begin working on a more fundamentally sound swing.
  2. Get fitted for irons. Regardless of your skill level, playing with irons that are a poor fit is like trying to read with someone else's glasses on. They may work, but in the end, you're probably just going to have a headache.
  3. Create a "My Swing" thread here . There are some great teachers on this site, as well as some good amateur players, that are more than willing to share some advice. Just make sure you become involved with the site. Members are much more willing to share advice with other members that they interact with.

I'm gonna say try to resist temptation and just buy another package set, Dunlop or whatever is fine.  You can get all new stuff with a new bag for under $200 and unless you're planning to hit 300yd drives they will hold up fine and outperform your Deep Red set.  Of course none of the rest of us can actually manage to resist buying name-brand a la carte clubs for the fun of it but for 95% of the golfing public the new technology filters down well enough to the cheap box sets to allow you to score the same regardless.

    • I am semi-loyal. Usually buy four dozen of one ball and only play that until out and then determine whether to continue or try another one. Since starting my semi-loyal path to success, I've been playing the below, not in order: ProV1 ProV1x ProV1x left dash AVX Bridgestone BXS Srixon Z-star XV I am not sure if it has helped anything, but it gives a bit of confidence knowing that it at least is not the ball (while using the same one) that gives different results so one thing less to mind about I guess. On the level that I am, not sure whether it makes much difference but will continue since I have to play something so might as well go with the same ball for a number of rounds. Edit: favorite is probably the BXS followed by ProV1/Srixon Z-star XV. Haven't got any numbers to back it up but just by feel.
    • Will not do it by myself, going to the pro shop I usually use after Cristmas for input and actually doing the changes, if any, but wanted to get some thoughts on whether this was worthwhile out of curiosity.
    • In terms of ball striking, not really. Ball striking being how good you are at hitting the center of the clubface with the swing path you want and the loft you want to present at impact.  In terms of getting better launch conditions for the current swing you have, it is debatable.  It depends on how you swing and what your current launch conditions are at. These are fine tuning mechanisms not significant changes. They might not even be the correct fine tuning you need. I would go spend the $100 to $150 dollars in getting a club fitting over potentially wasting money on changes that ChatGPT gave you.  New grips are important. Yes, it can affect swing weight, but it is personal preference. Swing weight is just one component.  Overall weight effects the feel. The type of golf shaft effects the feel of the club in the swing. Swing weight effects the feel. You can add so much extra weight to get the swing weight correct and it will feel completely different because the total weight went up. Imagine swinging a 5lb stick versus a 15lb stick. They could be balanced the same (swing weight), but one will take substantially more effort to move.  I would almost say swing weight is an old school way of fitting clubs. Now, with launch monitors, you could just fit the golfer. You could have two golfers with the same swing speed that want completely different swing weight. It is just personal preference. You can only tell that by swinging a golf club.
    • Thanks for the comments. I fully understand that these changes won't make any big difference compared to getting a flawless swing but looking to give myself the best chance of success at where I am and hopefully lessons will improve the swing along the way. Can these changes make minor improvements to ball striking and misses then that's fine. From what I understood about changing the grips, which is to avoid them slipping in warm and humid conditions, is that it will affect the swing weight since midsize are heavier than regular and so therefore adding weight to the club head would be required to avoid a change of feel in the club compared to before?
    • I think part of it is there hasn't been enough conclusive studies specific to golf regarding block studies. Maybe the full swing, you can't study it because it is too complicated and to some degree it will fall into variable or random.
