Was wondering if anyone had any suggestions as to any great public courses to play in the area. Going down to visit friends (mostly to escape the toronto winter!) and need some good spots to play.

I played a great course called La Verdae - it was very close to an Embassy Suite in Greenville - I'd recommend it.

Sorry I only know Hilton Head courses in SC. I am only responding because I just heard that Greenville is the most popular town name in the country. http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_the_most_common_U.S._place_names I thought Springfield would top the list. Nope.

Not sure what its current status is but many (20) years ago played a course called the Mid-Carolina Club near Prosperity, SC. Should be within your driving range. Also, Hunters Creek near Greenwood was quite nice - a little bit of a drive but it has 27 holes so might be worthwhile.
