Titleist 905r. Should I upgrade?

I'm currently playing a Titleist 905r driver, it's actually the only one I've ever had. I would interested to hear your thoughts on would it be worth upgrading to something newer? Is there much to be gained for me, a bogey golfer undergoing swing changes. Lastly I know that I would need to get custom fit using a launch monitor before I but anything. Just wanted people's opinions.

I think it would be good to upgrade but I would wait until the changes are a little more cemented.

Thanks, I sort of knew an upgrade was in order but it's always nice to be told you should buy new clubs :-P Also I will definitely wait until I start seeing a more consistent shot pattern. Which hopefully should come as I continue working with the guys at evolvr.

The 905R is a solid driver. If you are looking for a more forgiving driver, then you might see some benefit with an upgrade.

I think that clubhead is somewhat, much,  smaller than current offerings. And the bore thru shaft gives a different feeling. Suggest you do not discard 905r even after new purchase as you may miss the old gal and good feelings she gave you for years.

Yeah drivers are bigger now and more "optimized" for high launch and low spin.

Don't worry, she isn't going anywhere even if I get a new one. I don't think it would be worth selling anyway, it's pretty beaten up. I was its fourth owner when I bought it from a friend maybe 7 years ago.

The 905R is still 460cc - the maximum size allowed under the RoG, but the classic head shape masks this very well. It has a slightly flatter lie angle than most other drivers too - even  those with adjustable hosels. The one thing I would say about the 905R though is that it tends to generate a bit of spin. It's not as low spinning as some current offerings from Titleist or any other OEM. It does perform well though for those that like it - a classic pairing with the UST V2 (to keep spin down coincidentally) for example is still a bomber and the feel is solid.

A custom fit session on a launch monitor should reveal that some of the newer drivers will keep a decent launch angle with reduced spin compared to the 905R, but if you like how the old 905 series performs and the ballflight, then why swap? I would put the 905R in my all time top 5 drivers no question.

Thought i'd post a quick update...

When to the golf shop this morning to hit on a launch monitor for the first time ever. I found out a few things i wasn't expecting. First off i swing faster than i gave myself credit for, i guessed i was mid to low 90s mph with the driver but i'm actually over 100mph and pushed a few swings out at 105mph. I also found the reason for my underestimation of speed was my launch and distance.

With the 905r i was launching at 17 o and 4500rpm :-\ hence very high flight no roll to about 220 yards. With a Titleist 913 D2 with a stiff shaft rather than my high launch reg shaft in my current driver i was launching at 15 degs with 2700rpm  for a 235 carry and another 10 of roll.

So basically i had 20 yards to gain which was completely not what i expected! So in a few more months after more work with Brian on evolvr when i have my swing in a good place (not losing balls to the right with an over fade anymore) i will go and get a proper fitting for a new driver and fingers crossed 20 more yards.

The funniest thing was, before i hit any balls i told the guy working there "i know this new drivers wont make me hit it much further" but little did i know how badly fit my current driver was :-D

      Day 29 (9 Dec 25) - PW dink and rolls as well as low flighted chips.  Dink and rolls - set up with club head toe down/heel up to promote low flight, plenty of roll out.  Low flighted pitches - club flat on the ground to get ball up a Rick more and check more.   No more than 10yds total distance - focus on getting the ball to finish near (within 10’ dia circle) the target “pin”…

      Only ever used ShipSticks and never had a problem. It's really nice because you can ship to anywhere not just courses.  No matter what you use, I take the extra care of the clubs and wrap them in something before putting them in your bag and into the shipping box.

      Practicing my putting after work. I put five balls on the carpet and a mug on the other side. Once I make 3 out of 5 I can stop. If I leave any short or they go to far and fall off the rug, I restart.  Focusing on speed and hitting my mark 3 inches in front of me. Trying to gain consistency and discipline in all aspects of my putting game.
