I have a set of Callaway Z22 irons in steel (project 6) shafts.

My favorites are the C8 swing weight clubs 3-6-8-9 and the rest of them are c6, what can I do to get them (meaning the C6 clubs) to C8 ?

Shorten them at the butt ?

First of all, I'm a bit confused on your first sentence. Please clarify...

  • Do you have X22 irons, or maybe X22 Tour ? (Calla made no Z22)
  • Do you have Project X 6.0 shafts? (X22 irons came with stock Uniflex shafts, while X22 Tour came with PX, or TT Dynamic Golf S300 shafts as stock. Of course, someone could have ordered X22 irons with a PX shaft upgrade)

If you want to bring swingweight C6 irons to C8, you would need to lengthen the shaft. But, you don't want to do this - it will mess up the shaft length gaps, and the resulting distance between different irons. For the X22 irons, the 3-iron has a 39" shaft, and the remaining shafts on numbered irons get 1/2" shorter as the numbers and lofts get higher.

You need to add more weight to the head area of the 4, 5, 7 and PW. ( In irons, 2 grams added to head = +1 SW). You could do this one of three ways:

  1. Remove the grip, pour about 4 grams of tungsten powder down the shaft, and stabilize it with a rammed cork... Re-grip.
  2. Remove the shaft, insert a 4-gram tip weight into the tip end of the shaft, and re-epoxy the shaft into the hosel.
  3. Put 4 grams of lead tape - or two squares of 2-gram rubberized tungsen tape - on each clubhead.

If you have a golf shop do this for you, also have them check the irons to see if they make factory specs before doing the adjustments. Make sure your set doesn't have faulty shaft-trim lengths that are messing up the swingweight.

C8 seems low for men, especially someone swinging 6.0's. I fooled around with a 43 inch C5 driver for a while and it felt like I was swinging a shaft with no head, couldn't feel it. Anyway GW's sells bottles of powder, corks and rods for next to nothing. But if I was going to mess around I would buy a cheap SW scale and make sure the SW is what you think it is. You could try lighter grips I think Winn makes some in the 28g range.

Thanks to both replies.

I have a GW swing weight scale and a 1/4" roll of lead, I kept tapping different lengths of lead roll to the hosel of the C6 4 iron and to get it to C8 it took 10 gr.

Does this sound right?

I'm assuming you have one of the basic scales which requires you to "eyeball" the weight changes, rather than getting a digital readout to the tenth of a gram.

If you used the naked eye, I would guess you would need 4 to 5 grams of weight to make the change to +2 swingweights. So, I'm a little surprised it took so much lead tape.

By the way, are you the first owner on these irons? If not, who did you buy them from?

You might want to take the irons to a clubfitter to get them checked over.

I NOW have a Ralph Maltby swing weight scale, Ed Mitchell 4 gr weights, there needle grip remover and there iron corks & epoxy and the epoxy is drying right now.

As soon as it's dry, i'll re-install the grips and see where the SW is at.

Many Thanks for your on going advice WUTiger

Ok, grips on and there real close, maybe additional 1/2 t0 1 gr would have got it dead on.

Thanks again !!

If you're within 1/2 to 1 gram, your process variance is less than 1/2 a swingweight. No one can tell the difference between say, D0 and D1, so you're in great shape.

Swing on!
