Hi All,

I need help on deciding between these 2 sets of irons i can get he Nike VR_S (4i-SW) coverts new for the same price as second hand Ping G20's (5i-SW). I'm currently playing with 10 year old dunlop solutions and fade may ball occasionally and am hoping a new set of irons may get me hitting straighter shots.

Any thoughts advice appreciated.

Thanks

Try them both and decide for yourself. That's the only way to do it as you need clubs you feel comfortable hitting. Regards Mailman

Thanks Mailman, I will try do this. However where I live its hard to find these clubs let alone practice with them. I will look around though maybe some of the pro shops have them and will let me trial them out. I will probably buy them online in the end though but you are right its better to try them first.

Cheers

Well, for what its worth mate, I had a fitting for the Nike covert irons and the first time I hit them I was wondering what all the fuss was about. I was catching them thin then fat then shank it all about! However, the fitter put some strike tape on, then changed the head to a 2 degree upright one and it was like night and day! It was like hitting something completely different because suddenly I was getting both distance and height on my shots!

The coverts were definitely one of my two favourite clubs (I ended up going with the Titleist AP1 712 bats). I tried the Ping G25 and 825's and they were ok but weren't in the same easy to hit league as the Nike bats.

I guess you could buy them then take them to a local club pro to get them fitted to you?

I don't know where you are, but try to find the time to get fit for them. Nike and Ping have extensive FREE fitting days, and if all you need is a different shaft or lie angle, the custom order is no more expensive than buying off the rack. It may involve a day trip, but not much more than if you played a busy course in the next county. Reasonable people can disagree about when to get fit for clubs, but I don't think anyone will argue that it's a disadvantage to have fitted clubs. If you've played enough golf to know what your general shot shape is (which you sound like you do), you probably have a sufficiently repeating swing to benefit.
