From http://www.rydercup.com/europe/news/new-technology-give-ryder-cup-fans-best-experience-ever

Fans attending The 2014 Ryder Cup are set to enjoy one of the most technologically advanced golf events ever thanks to the use of Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology.

Spectators at Gleneagles will receive a special RFID Wristband with their tickets, allowing them to take part in fun activities around the course and share their experiences instantly to social media.

Once activated, the wristbands will allow fans to engage with many of the Official Partner activities based in the Ryder Cup Spectator Village including the BMW Car Display, and The Ryder Cup Experience with Standard Life Investments, where spectators can compete in a simulated team competition with live scoreboards around the venue.

Out on the course, the Active Scotland initiative* ‘Walk the Course’, will encourage spectators to get out to all areas of the venue with prizes for those who check in at points around the course.  Johnnie Walker will be welcoming spectators at the back of the 2nd Green, and BMW owners will be able to use their wristband to enter the Owners’ Café at the 10th Hole and spend their pre-loaded tokens.

I was just thinking how whenever I attend spectator sporting events, I always think to myself "man, I really wish I could be more involved.  Is there some way I can get virtual 'points' for walking away from the action and doing something else? That would really make the this game more fun."

Exactly.  And I'm going to go to the game anyway, so they don't need to do anything for me.  This is to interest the marginally interested.

Its the same with sports broadcasting--focusing on "stories" instead of the game to interest those on the fringe.  It annoys the "true" fans, but they're not gonna stop watching.

It would be a shame if they didn't add in a find the nearest toilet and direct me to my car features to work in conjunction with a smartphone. Or where is the nearest cheeseburger?

Food, toilet, car. I've got things in perspective! :-)

Kill slow play. Allow walking. Reduce ineffective golf instruction. Use environmentally friendly course maintenance.

They could link it to a Map My Run app and then fans could post on Facebook their whole experience including bathroom trips!  BTW this is in Scotland, so wouldn't it be kidney pies @FarawayFairways ?

    • Is it? I bought the Stack radar to replace my PRGR based on what Stack told me! When I am swinging for speed, the PRGR would miss 50%-80% of my backswings due to a higher speed. The stack seldom misses those- at least for me.
    • As an analyst by nature, I would like to compare the scores under both systems. It is something we can easily do if we have the data. I actually thought the new system was less fair to those whose game was on the decline - like mine! Old: Best 10 of last 20 scores with the .96 multiplier. Course handicap excluded course rating and overall par. New: Best 8/20. Course handicap includes course rating -par. My understanding is Stableford caps scores at Net double bogey like stroke play. If so, handicap should be slower to rise because you are only using 8 versus 10 scores. If I am missing something, I am curious enough to  want to understand what that may be. My home course tees that I play are 72.1/154 now. My best score out here is 82. When my game started to decline, my handicap didn’t budge for 13 rounds because of good scores in my first 8! I know I am an anomaly but my handicap has increased almost 80% in the past few years (with only a few rounds this year). For a few months I knew I was losing every bet because my game was nowhere near my handicap. I suspect I have steamrolled a few nuances but that shouldn’t matter much. When I have modeled this with someone playing the same tees and course, one good round, or return to form, will immediately reduce the handicap by some amount.
