I am in the market for a new driver shaft. I am currently playing:

Taylor Made R11s TP 8* with an Aldila Rip Phenom NL 70 gram x-stiff (3.0 torque)

I have been on launch monitors and these are my numbers:

Swing speed: 115mph average; 125mps when I go after it

Ball Speed: 155-165 average

Launch angle: 13*-15*

Carry: 280-300; average around 285-290 with pretty much 0 roll

Spin: I cant remember the exact numbers off the top of my head but it was a little higher then optimal but nothing crazy

I am looking to get my ball flight/launch angle down. I naturally have an upward strike with my driver which is why my launch angle is so high. I am not looking to change my swing since it generates plenty of power so I am looking for a shaft that will fit me better and launch it lower (with adequate amount of spin). Prior to putting the Phenom in my driver I played an x-stiff Whiteboard. I put that in and tried it on the monitor and had the same is with launch angle and it actually spun more.

I am thinking about the Speeder 757, any thoughts or other suggestions?

Your average smash is 1.39, that is pretty low for a driver. You want 1.45 or higher, you are missing out on about 6-10 mph ball speed.

I would bet your spin rate is higher than you think. With a poor strike (1.39 smash), you would probably get over 3000 rpm.

You have an 8 degree driver, a 70+ gram shaft, x-stiff, and it has a high kick point. You have a pretty low launching set up right now. You are not really going to see any significant drop in changing your golf shaft.

Pretty much it is your swing that is causing the problem. If your smash was 1.45+ and your spin was lower, and you still hit it too high, I would say you could check the shaft out. With your current set up, I highly doubt it is the equipment on this one.

Thanks for the advice I will have to head back to the monitor and be more conscious of the smash factor and spin rates, but I am almost positive my spin rates on well struck balls were around 2200-2400

I would be surprised if that was actually the case, if that was your spin you'd be seeing more roll, unless your course conditions are just soft. Launching at 13-15 isn't too high, some would say it's optimal. Do you typically miss your drives towards the heel? That will lower the smash factor and also add more spin.

I dont miss the center of the clubface too much with the driver. My big misses are blocks high right or the occasional snap hook (basically the same thing depending on my club face at impact) Although, when I do miss the center of the clubface it is definitely towards the heal for the most part

Ok. Just be aware that launching it at 13-15 isn't a bad thing as long as the spin is "low". 2000-2400 is a good range for that launch angle.

You can plug in some numbers here

http://flightscope.com/products/trajectory-optimizer/

Note how lowering the trajectory by 3 degrees (same spin) resulted in a drive that was 8 yards shorter.

I am not a low handicapper, and I don't go into such deep theory with my swing.  I would see a pro regards my best choice for my swing if I wanted what you do.  I concentrate on straight and accept my height/distance.  When I hit fairways I shoot much lower than my handicap.  That may not be an issue at your handicap but straight is most important to my mind.

    • To flog this subject even further, if that's even possible, this article from Golf Monthly just appeared today in one of my news feeds. Written by a golf writer in the UK who I never heard of, he's basically saying that there should be only 3-5 rounds from the most recent 20 that should count towards the average and only competitive rounds should count. He claims the erratic scorers would have less of an advantage than they do now. He makes a lot of references to "club golfers" in the UK being the ones who are mostly dissatisfied. https://share.google/qmZZBEoJvOxHxJGil  In my experience with my league where we have golfers with indexes ranging from 5 to 40, looking at the weekly results from the past two years, I can detect no pattern that would substantiate the claim that the current system gives an unfair advantage to either erratic golfers (aren't we all?) or higher handicappers. Apparently though, at least in the UK, this seems to be "a thing."
