Had a feeling the golf community would come down hard on this-hopefully smoking the Chargers will put some of this to rest. I do not agree with the fact that this is the reason for their success. Teams change their signs weekly and to assume the Pats could keep track of every change would be foolish. Still far and away the best team in football the last six years.

I feel very badly for the team but I suppose rules are rules. If you read the commentary it seems very clear that everyone tries to steal signals but the Pats coaching staff was pretty brazen to videotape, especially after being warned.

We'll see how things go this year. If I were a Patriots player I'd be playing the rest of the season with a chip on my shoulder and something to prove. Beating SD will do a world of good. Then the rest of the NFL can get off their collective high horses and get back to business.

I will note that the vote to allow a defensive player to have an in-helmet headset, like the quarterback, is gaining ground. It's already the majority, but I think it got 22 votes last time and needed 24 or something.

The only problem with that may be that you cycle defensive players in and out, but you don't cycle out your QBs. You'd have to put the radio in the helmet of a player who was always out there.

As a life long Giants fan, the sweat-shirted one is family, and you don't go against family. I'm hoping this will bring his time in Baaston to a close and bring him back to the G-men next season.

Packers 35 - Giants 13. We might need someone who can do more than grimace on the sideline.

If you want a mean chin, and for that matter spittle, word is Coughlin gets fired at seasons end, and Billy Cowher is a front runner as a replacement. If Crennel gets fired, Cowher will be in the running for that as well....at least that's what I've heard. Then again, Cowher is a disciple of MartyBall, and last I checked Marty S is still available...

So much for needing the signals. While I don't think one game makes a team, last night's performance by the Pats was quite dominant. Especially with all the hype and drama going on...they could easily have faltered. And for all you out there who don't think your team does the same thing...get your head out of the sand.
Players still have to perform, and execute...and the Pats executed to perfection last night. See ya LT!! 43 yards....BAH!

I am not a big pats fan I really do not like Bill "Hoody"

To bad for me I have LT on my fantasy team.

Keep it on the short grass.

Steelers went 15-1 a few years ago. Look where that got 'em.

Pats are over-rated... as the Chargers have been.

I am going to chime in only because I can :P

If you are stupid enough to use the same singals each and every time then you are more stupid then Bill was for filming. Heck it wouldn't be too hard to change up the singals or send in mulitple singals like they do in baseball.

You don't think each team has a "spotter"? They take an over head picture each and every down to see the formations. It wouldn't take a video camera to note down what play they ran out of what formation when they sent in a specific hand singal....which I am sure every team does.

Football is about execution, chances your opponent already has a pretty good idea what you are going to do in a given situation anyways. They know by the formation and by the personal you have on.

To me the only thing wrong Bill did was he recorded it after the league was told not to. Ethically he was wrong for breaking the rule but not for recording the singals.

Pats are like the Yankees. If they don't win, it will be like wow.... you guys can't finish....
they have the #1 offense and top 3 Defense... STACKED ROSTER

Pats proved that the tapes didn't matter. But i still think Bill should've gotten a suspension. Kraft is gonna pay the fine for Bill. If Bill leaves the NFL or Pats next season, the Pats get stuck w/ the lost draft pick(s).
The punishment is for the act of recording the D-Cordinator makin signals. Honestly we know the Pats are dominant cause they are a good team but they shouldn't have been taping.... i really don't know why they needed too...

Pats are over-rated???? They have the smartest QB in the league, a WR group that is out of this world, a defense that you can neither run on or pass against, and special teams that know what it takes to get the job done. The running game is average-boy what a dig! Not sure what you've been watching the first couple of weeks Iacas but it's pretty clear this team is for real. Ask all the Chargers players you are still asking themselves what happened. Granted when we get to the Colts, Ravens , and Steelers it will be a bit tougher but at worst we lose one of those games. I am not one of those fans who say the Pats are going 16-0 every year but this team is stacked!!!

No, they didn't. One game doesn't prove squat. They dominated for the most part (though it should have gotten to within 10 after that kick-off fumble), but so what?

The tapes were cheating. If Tiger Woods fails to take a two-stroke penalty and wins by 10, yet is later found out to have cheated, do you think it doesn't matter? Do you think perhaps Tiger might suffer a little criticism - and rightfully so? He'd be DQed, for one, and his reputation would go in the toilet. Cheating matters, and it's sickening how lax some people are about these kinds of infractions. What will you be saying when it's discovered that they also use unassigned radio frequencies or put microphones and transmitters into the helmets of players who aren't allowed to have them?

He signed a contract through 2013 this week and was always signed through next year. And the Krafts aren't too keen on Belichek as a person, so no, I don't think they're covering his fine. That would imply that Kraft thinks it's okay to cheat, and he's gone out of his way to make sure people know he didn't know about it at all prior to the accusations and investigation.

I bet the Pats won't play in the Super Bowl. I'm not jumping on the Pats love-fest or bandwagon, and the whole cheating thing casts a shadow on all their past accomplishments. While "you still have to execute" is true, it's a lot easier to execute when you know what's coming.

A stacked team means nothing in the modern NFL, and the Pats are no more stacked than most other teams. What have the Saints done this year? Indy almost lost this weekend too. The Cardinals aren't that good and look at their weapons. How about the stacked Bengals - they lost to the Browns. Stacked doesn't mean anything - particularly when the Pats are lauded as "doing more with less" than anyone else. This thread's about a funny video. Let's get back to that, not about prognostications for the season.

Why would I want to play golf with a Pats fan?

I bet - and fairly frequently - with people I know. Some dude on the Internet? No thanks. More like this: get back on topic time.

    • It's true that it is not always clear where to draw the line of "significant". But I would argue that saving half a stroke or more is definitely more than significant. According to the common meaning of "significant", which is all we have because the word is not defined elsewhere in the rules.  This is irrespective of the two stroke penalty for playing from a wrong place. That penalty is only for when there was no significant advantage.  And it is possible to tell to some certainty whether a stroke or half a stroke was saved by such tools as strokes-gained, experience of officials, etc. Applying the conditions listed in the definition of serious breach.  In the example in which a player gave themselves free relief from a boundary object, if relief was necessary, then that wrong place gave a significant advantage.  Though apparently there is some sort of verbal tradition that tournament officials have a higher standard of what they consider "significant". Much higher than one stroke. And they like to take into account that the player already received a two-stroke penalty, though that is not in the rules for determining what is a "significant advantage".
    • Until I can find some positive things to post about my swing I think it’s about time to…
    • How would you change the rule to make it more "fair", and still be consistently interpreted and enforced?  It may not be perfect, but as a referee I can watch a player and look at the ground surface and make a ruling.  How can it be changed to address different players and their individual height, weight, and shoe size?
    • A bit old.. but this rule is kind of unfair ...  Lets say that you have Emiliano Grillo and Darren Clark playing together on a PGA event and on one hole both hit the ball to the middle of the fairway only 1 inch apart. When they arrive to the ball Darren take his stand and water comes out from the ground and remains there so he procceds take a free drop on a dry area and hit his shot.  Afterwards Grillo takes his stance in the same spot as Clark, but because he is a lot ligther, no water araise from the ground. According to the rules he is not allowed a free drop from the same spot darren had a free drop seconds before. I would love to see this happenning live on TV. Can an argument be made by grillo? could and official use the "spirit of the rule" to let him have a free drop?
