All of a sudden, the last few times out I've been really starting to hook my drives. My playing partners told me its because im turning my right wrist over to much. How can I stop doing this, should I move the ball back in my stance? Any advice is apprciated, thanks.

Practice a left arm only swing. Keep your left arm/wrist from breaking down during the downswing - lead with your left arm on the downswing. Keep your hips moving on the downswing. Hope this helps...

I had this problem a couple of weeks ago. I kept everything the same but I concentrated on the position of my left wrist on the downswing. I concentrated on getting it square to the target on impact and not letting it get overtaken by the right wrist. Worked for me. I think I was letting my swing get too wristy and flipping.

Good luck!

This is my BAD miss - short and hard hook left. This means I got no hip turn and no power. My average miss is a long straight pull left. This means a little hip turn but not nearly enough. For me, both are a result of my arms getting ahead of my hips. To avoid this, I have to consciously think "keep your back to the target as long as possible". That thought helps my hips turn first, then everything else falls into place and BOOM! Long and straight with the proper finish. Maybe that's a good swing thought for you, too.

I've suffered from hooks ever since I took up the game. I have a whole bunch of modifications in my swing to guard against this issue.

First is setup, I have more weight on my front side than normal which makes my swing slightly more upright due to reduced spinal tilt.

Second, is head rotation. Instead of keeping my head down I let it rotate freely towards the target which means my arms are less likely to come across the ball instead of through it.

Three is checking to ensure that my grip isn't too strong.

Four, is keep my arms in front my body throughout the swing so that I don't attack from too far inside.

Five, if I'm having a really bad case of the hooks I start counter-rotating my wrists so that I'm at the top of my backswing position my clubface is completely open (a la Hogan).

Six, just stay loose and let the club release naturally instead of forcing it to release.

I'm fairly sure that there are other techniques as well but that is all that I can remember for now...

Could even deliberately attempt to slide laterally to induce a block.

big one: make sure your hands/arms don't get ahead of your lower body

My favorite drill when I am screwing up at my hands is this:

I take my 9 iron and use just my right arm to hit the ball. I don't do full swings. I start out just pointing the end of the club shaft at my belly button and keeping them in line as I swing back and then forward. Maybe 2 feet behind the ball then 2 feet through. I watch as the club head starts to turn up as the club follows my belly button backward then watch as it starts to turn up again on it's way past the ball.

Obviously you can't line up your belly button and the shaft of the club for a full swing, so after a few swings I start to break my wrist(no more than parallel to the ground with the shaft), but focus on getting the club back in line with my belly button as soon as possible and following it through the entire time.

This is just a good 'reset' drill for me. Breaks it down to the basics and gives me something small, but important to focus on.

As an aside, when I get the duck hooks it's not usually my wrist that is the problem. For me it starts lower. My duck hook is usually the result of popping up and back just before impact. Makes it look like my wrist is off, but really it's a result of a problem earlier in my swing. That might just be me though...

no, you're not the only one. when i start hooking badly, it's usually my legs that are to blame. however, mine might be for different reasons. i'm not terribly big at 5'8" and 150 lbs, so I have to "hit" really hard with my lower body. sometimes the timing just gets a little off and i get the hooks. however, tightening up the base usually straightens it out pretty well.
