I had some success today choking up on the driver. I am 5'6" and thinking that perhaps my driver is too long. Does it make sense that choking up will improve keeping the ball in fairway. I have been pushing a lot of my drives.

Choking the Driver makes sense to me. . .

There were interesting stats somewhere recently about more forgiving driver club head size--making driver more accurate than 3w. So why not choke down? Golf 4 Life's idea is pretty good. . . chop it. Does that involve a whole new shaft, or just a little snip??

I am around the same height as you and I personally hate chocking down on my clubs. I only choke down on my irons and my putter. With my driver I just widen my stance and stand further back. I also keep my hands forward so that the driver is square with the ball and not slanted. I started two months ago and I can sometimes get it 230 just by doing that.

That's been a tip from a lot of pros when they want to make sure they hit it straight. They choke up a little.

I think the proper term is to choke down on the club, not up.

And Bob Rotella will tell you to "grip down" on the club, because you never want the word "choke" to enter your psyche.

So I say "grip down" on the club.

Cut grip off with utility knife, carefully. With your best, sharp chop saw blade, cut off desired amount (I would masking tape the crap out of the area you're going to cut to minimize any shearing). Add grip tape, pour solvent into grip and shake, pour solvent over grip tape, slide on grip, enjoy new shortened club.

Nothing in the swing is done at the expense of balance.

That's very interesting. I started doing that as well and have been a bit more accurate with my driver and woods.

This is going to affect the swing weight of the club... you may need to add weight to the head in this case. Or just buy a shorter shaft -- one that was meant to be that size.

When I am having trouble in a round with the driver I grip down a bit. This usually helps me straighted out mid-round and then I gradually move back to the end of the club.

this is my understanding of the correct term..

I sometimes grip down on the driver when Im having my issues with it.. do whatever you have too so you can improve your game. As my father saids "theres no instant replay on a scorecard."

    • I don't have enough details to know what to tell you, man. If they were walking across, to play devil's advocate, maybe just wait another 10 seconds next time.
    • Day 11: Putts with a metronome and worked on some feels for greenside shots.
    • I realize the frame cuts off my tail but wanted to specifically see my hand path and club shaft and head travel from A5 to A7 with the grip and posture work I have been doing . This might be the shallowest I have managed to get the club head to enter into impact. I like the finish much more as well.
    • Context:  I used to play golf very regularly (and when I'm playing regularly, I'm on TST regularly).  In summer 2022, I got my handicap down to a personal-best 11.9.  Unfortunately, in the three years since then, I've had far less time to play, and didn't really make the time to practice.  I've played a bit more the past few months, and I anticipate having a lot more time to practice starting in about two months, at which point I'm hoping to go back to my old practice habits (practicing daily, Evolvr lessons, spending more time on TST (come to think of it, I can do that important last part now)).   But it was thinking about how different my nines have been a few times in the past month or so that made me wonder if there was a thread here about it, and sure enough, there was.  In the past month or so, I've had a 38-46 and a 45-39.
