I just purchased a mint condition set of srixon I506 irons for a song.  Currently they have dynamic gold s300 shafts weighing in at 130g.  These shafts are a little heavy for me.  I feel like i really have to get after it to make them feel good.  In my old irons i was playing the fst 115s which I think is a really good shaft for a really good price.  Only problem is these srixons are .355 and not .370 like the fsts.  I am also on a budget so I was looking at getting shaft pulls off ebay.  The couple the interested me are:

Dynalite gold S300

Dynamic lite x flex, probably would soft step these

kbs tour

The problem with the first two is that I think they are not made anymore so I have been searching for the last few nights trying to find specs on them.  I'm a stiff flex,  prefer shafts 110-120g, and either a mid or high kick point.  I don't need help getting the ball up in the air.  My budget is under $100 for a set, cheaper the better.

Anyone know the the specs for the first two or other recommendations?

.....great forum btw, I started building clubs as a hobby in my apartment and it has led to a part time job repairing clubs.  Since I actually know some things now I want to contribute more instead of just being a lurker.

Thanks

KBS Tour V

Stiff - 110g - lo spin & mid traj

I looked these up last week when comparing the new Hogan shaft options.

$100 total for a whole set?? Perhaps older DG series shafts. I dunno, but eBay probably has something to try.

Gambling is illegal at Bushwood sir, and I never slice.

I'll have to look into those.  Ebay has some decent deals on shaft pulls.  The dynalites look brand new but like I said I don't think those are made anymore.  The models on ebay anyways.  True temper doesn't have them listed on their site.

Kbs tour are mid bend, but they play to the s+ I hear, and there is no telling how they have been tip cut, though its probably normal. Stepping is only worth about 1/3 flex. I would stay away from the x flex.

The .355 is a taper tip.

The Dynalite Gold S300 - this is a high-launch version of the Dynamic Golf. Dynalite Gold had a low kickpoint and soft tip, weighed 120 grams. You would not want these - the iron shots balloon on windy days. (I played early Dynalites in custom-fit component irons from  from 1994 to 2008.

The 2009 GolfWorks catalog features Dynamic Gold High Launch, which had nearly the same specs as the Dynalite. And, some Dynalite variants appeared up through 2014.

In 2015 GolfWorks, Dynalite is gone as a name. The Dynalite characteristics now appear in the True Temper XP95, 105, 115 family. Check out the TT site for specs.

----------------------

Dynamic lite X flex??? I'm not finding these.  Possibly you mean Dynamic Golf SL (superlight) - these weigh 108 grams in X100 taper-tip. Again, check TT site for specs.

IF you liked the 115 gr. FST shafts, you might consider some Project X 5.0 Rifle Flighted shafts, which are taper tip (0.355"). I just so happen to have some pullouts of these shafts.

The rifle shafts prevent short irons from ballooning, but give longer irons a little boost. The FCM = 5.5, compared to S300 = 5.8. Weight is 115 grams. But, flex might be a little soft.

Shafts also have Winn Dri-Tac midsize grips on them, which could get you through half a season.

If you think you might be interested, send me a PM. ( iacas, mvmac : hope I haven't broken rules by drifting into a Marketplace topic....)

Thanks for the specs WuTiger.  I've hit the project X shafts and didn't really care for them.  I think I will keep looking.  I'm in the midwest so golf season is a long time away.

One thing to consider while noodling is that very often a lighter weight shaft can have the characteristic of playing stiff to flex. I have run across this many times so look before leaping.

WUTiger, you are the man on shafts! I am considering a shaft change as well. I currently play TT DG s300. I'm 58, so I'm probably leaving some distance on the table, although I do have a higher SS. I think I may go to my local Golfsmith and just try some different shafts to see if I can get better performance. I have never liked regular flex shafts in the past. Maybe it's time. Testing will tell. My main criteria is shot dispersion (shouldn't everybody's be that). :-)

v,

I went through this a few years ago at age 58. (I'm 64 now).

I had Dynalite S300 (high launch) at the time, and I was losing too much distance. Same with driver (although I later found the shaft was among the stiffer Stiffs.)

Anyway, I initially had X20 irons with uniflex shafts (about 110 grams, between R and S), and then Project X 5.0 (turns out they were actually firm flex, rather than Regular).

Then, I reshafted my X20 Tours with the NS Pro 8950GH (97 grams and R.flex), after testing out some different shafts in a demo 6i I had. Seems to work pretty well, but...

At demo days, I have been able to handle S-flex in irons that have the ultralight shafts in them (85 grams in steel). But, I overswing on the ultralights, and have direction problems. And, this time last year the Mizuno man came by Golf Galaxy, and the shaft analyzer claimed I should be in S-flex or S-flex softstepped for irons. So, I probably need another iron fitting.

Basically, shaft fitting includes more than just clubhead speed. The Mizuno shaft optimizer can give you a five-part breakdown on your swing (swing DNA):

  • Headspeed
  • Tempo
  • Toe-Down
  • Kick Angle
  • Release Factor.

    • To flog this subject even further, if that's even possible, this article from Golf Monthly just appeared today in one of my news feeds. Written by a golf writer in the UK who I never heard of, he's basically saying that there should be only 3-5 rounds from the most recent 20 that should count towards the average and only competitive rounds should count. He claims the erratic scorers would have less of an advantage than they do now. He makes a lot of references to "club golfers" in the UK being the ones who are mostly dissatisfied. https://share.google/qmZZBEoJvOxHxJGil  In my experience with my league where we have golfers with indexes ranging from 5 to 40, looking at the weekly results from the past two years, I can detect no pattern that would substantiate the claim that the current system gives an unfair advantage to either erratic golfers (aren't we all?) or higher handicappers. Apparently though, at least in the UK, this seems to be "a thing."
