I was at the range today, and realized that my downswing benefited greatly when I started it by pushing off my back foot.

Who pushes off the back foot on purpose? or purposefully not? Why?

Once upon a time I did... I referred to it by a different name though, "active knee drive". I found that while it was fantastic for irons it just caused too many problems with my longer clubs (because I couldn't keep my body from 'swaying' which resulted in inconsistency with fairway woods and driver). At one point I thought about using the this techique for my irons only and a more conventional swing with my woods. However, I didn't want to do that so I ended up developing a hybrid swing...

Sometimes I do that. It can be pretty powerful. For me, its just another way to concentrate on weight shift. I hav elots of swing keys, and when warming up, if I'm not hitting the ball solidly, I go through a metal list of them until one clicks. This is one.

On another note, a few years ago I spent a lot of practice time doing momentus drills. One was take the club to the top, hold for 5 seconds, then push off with your back foot. At times, this brought on amazing ball striking rounds. Keep it in the catalog, but don't trust the idea to be "the secret to golf."

That's what I teach people to do who need it.

Equipment, Setup, Finish, Balance, and Relax. All equal in importance and all dependent on each other. They are the cornerstones of a good golf swing.

I did try pushing off my back foot when I was still looking for what's best for me. Several times it did produce good result, but afterwards my swing became inconsistent as I put more weight on the back in the follow through due to more active back foot. Perhaps that's why it's recommended to initiate downswing with front part of the foot.
