Hey everyone ,
I am in the market for a new set of irons.  I know getting fitted is the best thing to do, but am on a little bit of a budget. I am 6'-2 3/4 tall, and my wrist to floor measurement is about 37 3/4. Researching online, it appears as though I would need maybe a +.5 in club length and a 1-2 degree up in lie angle. Again, I know this is not the best approach but hoping to get in the ball park. The factory shaft lengths for both the Callaway X2 Hot and TM Speedblades appear to be about +1/2" longer than standard which I find to be an average of about 38"-38.5" for a 4 iron.  I found a set of the X2 Hot's advertised with a 2* up for a good price and was wondering if this set would be in the ballpark of what I might need.  Anyone with similar measurements that could shed a little light would be greatly appreciated

Thanks, Bill

Writs-to-floor is only a starting point for clubfitters to use for initial club specs. Go ahead and get fitted. The cost of a fitting will be less than you buying and selling irons hit-and-miss until you find the right model and specs.

Try the clubs out if possible - hit golf balls with them - and see if the lie angle and shaft length work for you.

All good info by WUTiger, but if you are serious about your game and want a serious club fitting, it's a complete process with every club in the bag. Your 3 iron my be 5 degrees up, but your 5 may be only 2 degrees and so on and so forth. As for extending the length of the shafts, that to becomes a point of no return. You can extend to the point where you have to swing a telephone pole stiffness and in doing so, can lose direction and distance. There's always some sort of trade off in these actions. If anyone remembers George Archer PGA Tour back when, he had to really have a deep knee bend at address because his clubs could only be so long. He was if not mistaken around 6'5" - 6'6". But as WUTiger said, go hit the clubs, you may just luck out............

For what it's worth, My son is 6'3" and went to a XX shaft with 2" over. He was all over the place. Re-evaluated and went to just an X shaft at 1" over and 3 degrees upright with the 6 and 8 iron being set 1 degree (No idea why).........

Hate crowned cups.

In the ballpark is better than 99% of the people out there who just buy off the rack, so I'd say sure, why not.

I am roughly the same height as you and play irons that were fitted to me and are extra long and upright.  My 6-iron is 38.5" long and has a lie angle of 64 degrees.  My old 6-iron (which I played for 15 years) is 37.25" long and had a lie angle of 62.5 degrees.

Point is, I can still hit those old irons just fine and they aren't going to affect my score all that much.

We are similar in measurements I am 6'3 205 big hands and I can say get professionally fitted D2P. changed my game and my back. I have to play 1" over standard with 1* up. bigger grips etc. shafts played a huge difference too. If you can try these locally I would suggest that before just buying.

    • You might also consider a tune-up lesson. Check and see if anything in your set-up or basic swing is holding you back. I have been playing for more than five decades, but on occasion I've had to make swing tweaks due to age, loss of flexibility, etc. You don't have to reinvent your swing. A couple of static set-up changes might really help out.
    • Good advice. In general, you want to take whatever weight you are lifting to a couple of reps before failure, for muscle growth. There are other tactics for PT related stuff. I would trust your PT person.  For muscle growth, you can go like 30 reps to failure. It is tougher to gauge. Also, it takes 2x as long to do the same number of working sets per week if you are doing 15 instead. It is way less efficient, but your case is special because of the injury/aggravation to the hip.
    • Several years ago I got paired with a twosome of golfers, one of which had a maybe 5-year-old son with him. The kid had a putter and a 7i with him, and on some holes he would drop a ball near the green, chip on, and putt. If the kid started to get distracted, the dad would ask, "Do you need to rest?" The kid would nod yes, and then take his dad's seat riding in the cart for a couple of holes. It was a slow day, and the kid was polite and friendly. We got through 18 just fine. (If it had been a crowded course day, I'm sure it would have been less pleasant.)
    • Caution for the seniors on weight training: Listen to your body. (I'm 75) I got a recent session with an orthopedist after a training-related injury. I put too much weight on a new resistance machine at the gym and ended up with bursitis in my left hip. Of course, it's the hip I dislocated back in 2023. I have my first physical therapy session tomorrow. I remarked that some days I can do 45 lbs. chest press - two sets - without much effort. But other days it drops down to 30 (😩) with just one set. (Complicating factor: I had digestive problems in this fall and lost about 20 lbs., with slip in muscle tone.) Orthopedist said that I want to feel some resistence, but that I should go with lots of reps with manageable weights rather than trying to set some sort of lift-pound record. I'm sure I'll get some refinements on lifting during tomorrow's PT.
