I've been Playing Golf for: 1 year serious, a few years not practicing/worrying about golf

My current handicap index or average score is: 13.x

My typical ball flight is: straight/draw with irons. Fade with driver

The shot I hate or the "miss" I'm trying to reduce/eliminate is: Slice with driver when I'm lazy, chunk iron shots when I sway on the backswing (trying to keep my head stable)

7 IRON DOWN THE LINE

DRIVER DOWN THE LINE....Went a little hard at it as it was the last ball of the day :bugout:

feedback is much appreciated ...btw if anyone wants to draw lines to show me a flaw please do, or recommend me something where I can do that. I do it with the Zepp but I need someone filming, this is just attached to my bag.

I'd take a look at this thread and get the eyes lower at address.

Will help you turn your shoulders on a steeper pitch, get them to rotate at a right angle to your address inclination. Your shoulder flatten out on the backswing (red line) which can lead to path and contact issues.

Thank you! I'm going to read that on my commute into the city. In essence it would probably be wise to look at the inside of the ball at address? I think I've have success with that before, I must have abandoned it without knowing.

That was a great read with many examples, not to mention in plain English...thank you, I look forward to hearing more from you I really like your analysis of the swing/posture. Thanks again

Just make sure to look at the ball or whatever part of the ball your want, with your central vision. In other words don't have the eyes up and try to look at the ball from there, lower the eyes/chin so you can see the ball. Will encourage the left shoulder to work more down, under your chin.

Am I coming over the top? I know I do sometimes but someone watching that video said I'm coming dramatically over. I drew some lines and it looks like I'm pretty on plane.

That sure doesn't look over the top to me.

I wouldn't worry about that now, focus on the priority, stick with the posture and backswing stuff and the downswing will get better.

I really focused on the head/eye/posture that you were speaking about and shot a 37 on the back 9 (the only 9 I played so far this week) at my home course. I felt good and really only hit 2 "bad shots" (chunked a 58* from like 60 yards out, topped a 7i on an approach). Other than that my ball striking was pretty solid, played off the fairway and had the putter in my hand after my first shot on the par 3's.

I went on a launch monitor yesterday and the club fitter said that I deloft all my clubs by a club....i.e my 6i has the distance, flight, launch that my 5i should have. He suggested getting higher launching shafts than I currently play. I'd kind of just rather work on my swing. Does anyone see any reason my launch is low? (I guess besides the ball position)

Edit: the 6i was carrying about 180 on average but had significant rollout due to the launch. I want to land the ball a little softer, I'd be happy to lose some distance (this has never been an issue) in order to land the ball softer. Some of them were rolling out to 200.

@PatrickBateman , a face-on look would be ideal, but I wouldn't put it past the guy running the launch monitor to be talking out of his rear to sell you some new shafts or something. 180 is about right for a 6I. And PGA Tour pros launch the ball pretty low with every club. 6I is (IIRC) about 15° or a bit less.

Edit: Yep:

The 180 carry was fine, it was the rollout. There were times where it was rolling out to 200 which would not make for an ideal ~180 approach into the greens. I never really feel normal on a LM though, I hit a lot of errant shots that don't normally happen on course/range. Im sure a lot of people feel that way. I would much rather demo clubs/shafts on a grass range.

Your not going to get that kind of roll out on a green, maybe if it's rock hard.

Hey guys,

So lately I've been playing a local course a lot that is a par 3-4. I really haven't pulled my driver out a whole lot because I've been working on my long irons. I am now able to work the ball/do some things with my longer irons off the tee that I had previously not been able to do. My iron play has gotten better since I'm really only using irons on this course. The problem was at the range recently (where I've also been focusing on long irons) I was not nearly as consistent as I was with my driver before I let it get "rusty." Worm burners, you name it I was hitting it. Today I played a course that is a lot bigger than where I've been playing and the driver was very inconsistent (usually don't have this problem). I either tagged it really solid or hit a worm burner. I was also unable to work the ball as much as I usually can with it which isn't very much to begin with. I just feel kind of lost standing over it now considering I haven't really been using it a whole lot. Attached is a video of my swing, criticism is welcomed. This was a video from the range recently where I wasn't hitting the driver as well as I usually do.

First off, that swing overall looks pretty good!

Before I start this advice part, I am not a golf teacher or pro, and I have not spent a long time studying swing flaws and fixes, everything is from my experience. The best advice I can give is if the problem persists and fixes don't do anything or make the swing worse, go to a pro for a quick lesson so they can see what is wrong with all their experience. But here is my two cents:

The big thing that stood out to me though was how much the lower body was moving back and forth especially near impact, and the off-balance finish. I used to have the same problem of almost rocking my lower body which not only cut back on power, but also made it very difficult to time the swing correctly. When the hips are moving so much, the swing becomes much more based on timing of hand rotation and in-part luck of where the club is because of the inconsistency of where the body is at impact. The best way I have found to fix that "swaying" is to slow down the swing. During practice sessions take 5 minutes and just go through the motions of your swing very slowly. Then, when you are actually swinging make sure that your swing is not rushed, speed is obviously important to hit the ball far, but rushing through the swing and firing your body through with no control will decrease power and accuracy. Sorry if that sounded a little mean/like I don't like your swing, they are just my suggestions. Otherwise, the takeaway and grip and everything else looked fine to me. Hope your swing gets back to being consistent and you start to bomb it straight again.

    • Nothing exposes low point control, and for that matter the general quality of ball striking like tight lies. Lol! I am at a crossroad. My days of playing with a super strong left hand grip are coming to an end it seems. I'm finding it increasingly difficult to maintain proper face control through impact as the club face naturally wants to turn over. The quality of strike and ball flight difference when I weaken the grip is stark. Problem is a weaker grip is at odds with my poor sore left forearm which I have been nursing for last few days after 3 days of demanding golf. As of now I will continue my 'transition' to a weaker grip with woods and hopefully my forearm will condition as I go along. Maybe someday I'll get to a normal address with irons too.
