Wedge help!

I'm curious about the difference/pros and cons of using a wedge that matches the iron set vs a stand alone wedge. I currently have some an older Taylormade Z Spin 56 and 60. Looking for getting some new wedges, probably 54 and 58 since my game has improved a lot since taking some lessons.

What's the loft of your PW?? How do you use each of your wedges and for what type of shots?? Also what kind of conditions do you play in most of the time?? If your playing well with your current wedges, why change lofts on the new ones?? :)

PW is 45 and AW is 50. I basically stopped using them completely except for the 56 out of the sand. Anything under 100 is a bump and run. Whenever I would use them for full shots I would always just dig them in and hit it fat. Which I know is mostly me but, maybe it's me just wanted some new "better" wedges.

If your hitting them fat on full swings your most likely coming in steep. High bounce wedges will help a bit with digging, but won't "fix" it. Look into the TaylorMade ATV Wedges or the new TM Tour Preferred wedges with ATV grind. The originals had really good turf interaction if you can stand the tongue on the back. I haven't tried the new ones yet but they come in the same ATV grind though.

I was looking at the Taylormade ATV, don't really have a place to hit them beside Dick's. The turf just doesn't cut it, never really have demo days or anything around me.

Well if fat shots are your big miss I'd recommend going with the original ATV's which can be had for a decent price now or any other High bounce wedges(10*/12* and above) with a wide sole.

If you often hit full shots with your PW and AW, you might find the shaft in your numbered irons works best.

For SW and LW, especially if you use them mainly for partial shots, a heavier shaft might work best.

The Nike fitters talked about this today when tour van came to our club. I have tried some PW from different iron sets lately, and I find the shaft used in the numbered irons works well on full and partial shots.

But, it's all up to what works for you. Visit the spring demo days, and try out some wedges with light shafts and heavy shafts. In the past decade, the OEMs have recommended the heavy Wedge Flex shafts (often S200 or S300) for specialty wedges (non-PWs). But, more shaft options are being promoted. Just check out the different OEM sites to see what's available in wedge shafts.

Not necessarily, a 46*/48/ bladed wedge will launch the ball lower than a 45* gi set wedge that's designed to get the ball"in the air". So you'll get a little more distance out of it vs the matching sets wedge of the same loft so you can have a bit more of a loft gap there if needed.
