Fairway Width

The U.S. Open keeps its fairways from 22 to 28 yards in width most years.

The 17th hole at my home course has a fairway that's 17 yards wide, and some trees actually overhang it in places (the left side, about 290 from the tee, for one). The average width of the fairways at my course are 20-24 yards, in fact.

How wide are your home course's fairways?

Not wide enough


(i will actually measure a selection over the weekend and report back).

28 yards wide is a fair target though.Im damned sure my home clubs are going to average way less than that also.

I am not sure of the average width of my home course's fairways, but the #6 seems to have widened since I was last there.

Most of the fairways on the Black or the Red at Bethpage are at least 25 yds but the rough is over yor shoes so it makes you think they are narrower.

Played in a comp today and walked some of the fairways on the back 9 to find the width:

10: 20 yards
12: 23 yards
13: 29 yards
15: 28 yards
16: 25 yards
17: 27 yards
18: 24 yards

AVERAGE ON BACK 9 = 25.14 yards.This 9 = 3401 yards and is par 36.

Bet the roughs not as penal as a US Open course though !!!!

Now going back out with a friend for another 9 holes - im going to take some pictures of the course and will post here later tonight.

I don't mind narrow fairways, I'm use to hitting from the rough

But I hate when they have narrow fariways, with thin rough that slopes toward, woods, water, and OB..

There are a couple of courses here that if you miss the fairway by 5 yards, even if you hit it with too much draw of fade, it just rolls down the hill to OB, woods or water. Just doesn't seem right. Either put some serious grass in the rough or get rid of the hills.
