Hi. Im completely new to golf so know nothing. But looking to start playing soon. I was given a set of macgregor tourney clubs. Does anyone know if these are any good as they look quite old. Any info on these would be much apreciated. Thanks

I suspect these are from the mid-1980s - I'm recalling this from deep memory... The o-ring at the junction of the hosel - instead of a ferrule - seems to fit the era.

I looked on eBay and found some heads which match your pictures. Unfortunately, these were individual irons and the seller gave zero info on pedigree and model/year.

The clubheads have the metal concentrated on the sole and toe, so this should get the ball up a little. You'd just have to try them out and see if they fly OK.

You might play them a season, and then get fitted for newer clubs.

Thanks for the reply. I'll take them to the driving range today. And try them out. If I don't get on with them are they worth anything. Or should I just bin them and buy a more up to date set. Thanks paul

These are not one of the classic MacGregor iron models - it was sold mainly in general sporting good venues. MacGregor got into trouble in the early 1990s when it had some 40 different club models in play. It's hard to get top dollar for your pro-line MTs at a country club pro shop when a department store MacGregor model sold for well less than half. MacG muddled its image in the marketplace.

When MacGregor was bought about 1998, the new owner did drastic pruning of the number of club models offered. Golfsmith bought MacGregor in 2009, and after an 18 month reorganization MacGregor releasing a new generation of clubs.

Selling the Tourneys you have? You might get $50 for the lot as a second-hand sports shop, but no guarantees.

I think those are from the 1970's or very early 80's. My first decent set were McGregor Tourneys that I got around 85-87 and the were quite a bit more modern that those (looked more or less like a normal cavity back)

Thanks for the input. As I said, I was going from deep memory. If you can find an old ad for the irons in question, please post. They don't appear in the normal MacG club listings.

My first set of clubs were tourneys with a leather wound grip - I got them mid 80's but I think they were old even then. They were hard to hit at first but really great clubs once I got used to them. Definitely give them a try.

Mid 1970s. I was in HS when these came out and, for me, they were lust worthy. I bought a set on sale at a shop in Nashville my freshman year of college (1976). I played them until the early 1990s, although I didn't play much though that time span.

Definitely not classic Tourneys, though.

I seem to recall they played well enough (never could hit the 2 iron, though), although when I went to have the lies adjusted the 9 iron was VERY upright from the factory and couldn't be bent far enough (I recall reading that was problem with certain MacGregor clubs).

    • Is it? I bought the Stack radar to replace my PRGR based on what Stack told me! When I am swinging for speed, the PRGR would miss 50%-80% of my backswings due to a higher speed. The stack seldom misses those- at least for me.
    • As an analyst by nature, I would like to compare the scores under both systems. It is something we can easily do if we have the data. I actually thought the new system was less fair to those whose game was on the decline - like mine! Old: Best 10 of last 20 scores with the .96 multiplier. Course handicap excluded course rating and overall par. New: Best 8/20. Course handicap includes course rating -par. My understanding is Stableford caps scores at Net double bogey like stroke play. If so, handicap should be slower to rise because you are only using 8 versus 10 scores. If I am missing something, I am curious enough to  want to understand what that may be. My home course tees that I play are 72.1/154 now. My best score out here is 82. When my game started to decline, my handicap didn’t budge for 13 rounds because of good scores in my first 8! I know I am an anomaly but my handicap has increased almost 80% in the past few years (with only a few rounds this year). For a few months I knew I was losing every bet because my game was nowhere near my handicap. I suspect I have steamrolled a few nuances but that shouldn’t matter much. When I have modeled this with someone playing the same tees and course, one good round, or return to form, will immediately reduce the handicap by some amount.
