The same way that I'd always play it. Hit driver, then an approach with the most appropriate club.

Honestly, it's 8 clubs. You're not going to find that there's much, if any real difference. I really think you're over-thinking it here. Just play your normal game...

The only advice that I'll add is that if you think you're stuck between clubs, take the longer of the two. The vast majority of amateurs come up short the vast majority of the time any way.

cool. you're probably right on that. my normal game can get complicated though like which way to swing. lol any dogleg rights i am using my 5w, any dogleg lefts i am using my driver, etc. but i am one of the people here who still hasnt read LOWEST SCORE WINS.  i was hoping that people that navigate around the course using principles from the book might get more detailed with it. i guess i need to get the book. :)

If possible try to play 3 balls. One with a 5i, one with a 6i and one with a 7i.

If you carry your 7i 135 yards on average, for example, you might get up to 10-15 yards of bounce and roll on a dry fairway. This is potentially 150 yards. So, any par4 up to 450 yards can be reached in three shots. If on wet fairways then 405 yards is reachable in 3 shots. Anything less will leave a pitch shot. The advantage of a shorter club is the ability to pitch and chip more accurately.

If your 7i carries longer, then it's only gets better and easier.

I was debating on whether I would take a 5i or a 7i, but based on your logic here, I'd take a 7i. I use my 5i to get out from behind trees a lot, but I think the more accurate short game outweighs that. And I'd hope I'd be less in the woods without any long clubs.

Still working out the final club. Just read that with firm or wet sand it is better to use a wedge with less bounce like with most gap or lob wedges. The sand wedges I have have very high bounce. Mid October I am thinking the sand will be firm. it is right now from what I heard. I need to work with my wedges some. I hit them all equally bad. If the sand is indeed firm and a low bounce wedge is best couldn't I just use my pitching wedge or will that dig too much? I have a LH Pw, LH Sw, Rh Pw, Rh sw, Rh gw. Which two do you think I should take? Thanks for the help.

    • Day 33 (13 Dec 25) - Worked on weight shift and resetting the left heel during downswing (after listening to a discussion on Golf School this morning on PGA Tour Radio).  It centered on how Jack Nicklaus lifted his lead heel and how long driver champs do as well.  Taking cues from that discussion, worked an exaggerated feel of the left heel working doing some swing drill in the backyard using the 7i.  Wrapped up the session by hitting a few low bump and run shots in the backyard - keeping the process slow and exaggerated.

    • It may not have been block practice, though, is one of the main points here. You may have been serving and from the same place, but you were likely trying to do slightly different things. It seems that would only be blocked practice if you were trying to hit the same exact ball hit to you to the same exact place in the far court. I'm not sure that's as random as if the ball that you're given to hit is at different places, too, but again…
