I've been Playing Golf for: 13 Years

My current handicap index or average score is: Don't know

My typical ball flight is: Medium-high, average 100-115 yards most irons

The shot I hate or the "miss" I'm trying to reduce/eliminate is: Fat shots, slices and occasional hook

I seriously struggle with my game and my shots are absolutely all over the place. I hit a very large percentage of my shots fat and chunked, but also struggle a lot with a slice. My real issue though is simply the wild variety and inconsistency of my shots.

My main issues from what I can see are an early release combined with my head moving in front of the ball. And an impact position where my hands are trailing way behind...?

However I've been working on delaying the release and moving the low point forward for months and months and it seems pretty much any attempt to do so just causes horrible slices...

I've also heard that trying to hold angles and build lag is putting the cart before the horse, and shouldn't be strived for in itself...? So I'm left trying to find the best way to improve my impact position without 'trying' to manipulate the release and shaft angle etc...and tbh I'm a bit stuck...

Any ideas?

Is this your normal on course swing or just a drill? With that being said, the flip you are seeing is what we refer to as Key 3, Flat left wrist at impact. It is not really the wrist being flat, which is an older term, but rather the shaft being in line with your left hand at impact.

Below are two screen shots. The first is at the top of your backswing. Note how far your head and hips have moved back.  You want to avoid this by doing a centered hip turn.

Staying centered helps you get the weight forward easier and that will improve your impact position and reduce the flipping.

The best way to practice this is slowly as is discussed in the thread below. If you have a mirror you can practice the backswing in front of, then do that too.

Hi, thanks for writing such a long and detailed reply. Yeh I tend to do that as part of trying to get my weight onto my back foot on the backswing. I had a lesson and was encouraged to get nearly all my weight on it before transferring it forward. I'll work on doing it without swaying

I did a couple of practice swings and felt immediately like my angle of attack was slightly shallower I wasn't bottoming out so soon. whether it will fix my trajectory issues I have no idea! But yeh hopefully that should show on the range tomorrow. I'll report here

Do you think keeping my head in the correct position will help keep the face square at impact when the shaft is leaning forward too? I don't get why the face is always open with a leant shaft when my grip is correct...

Just to clarify: Are you saying that my weight should remain evenly distributed during the backswing? Or just shift back to a lesser extent?

The "weight" or pressure against the ground will shift to the right because your arms and the club are moving to the right. But your body should remain centered. If we had scales under Matt's feet in the photo, they would show increased force to the right during the backswing. But his body is centered. That is the key. But when we hear from instructors that we should "load the right side, etc.) we naturally assume we should shift right like a baseball swing. That causes problems.

There is a thread about this below. But it is very technical and frankly, you don't really need it to improve.

If you practice staying centered on the backswing and then sliding your hips forward at the start of the downswing as you already do, your contact will improve and you swing path will get more in to out and more controllable.

I just got back from the range... All a bit horrible still tbh. I was too confused about other aspects of the swing to focus primarily on the centred backswing, but I did make a conscious effort to improve it throughout. I was working mainly on maintaining a slight bend at my right elbow to keep the shaft lean, which seems to be the only way I can reach impact with a leaning shaft without being too open and slicing horribly. Not liking the feeling of this though tbh...Loads of tension and I'm still hitting really fat on a lot of the shots. Mainly because I'm not successfully managing to shift the weight forward. Any attempt to do so seems to cause a chunked slice....

ugh my swing is an absolute mess, I'm at a loss....

I was also experimenting with this Shaun Clement approach yesterday of throwing the hands forward with a very relaxed and loose swing but it just caused wild slices for me. Hence why I then worked on that right elbow to square it up...

That is looking better. Keep going on it. If you can spend 5 to 10 minutes everyday doing it correctly, it will really help.

OK thanks. I'm not sure I'll carry on holding the angle with the elbow so stiffly like that, but I'll keep working on the centred backswing.

I think his simple approach to the swing might be just what I need...It seems like a really good method, I really like it. I'm finding it difficult to execute but I successfully managed to hit one or two clean strikes hitting the ground after the ball earlier which was promising

My Swing today. I was hoping, having worked on letting the arms drop naturally that my hands at impact would now be further forward. But I was frustrated to find that they were at exactly the same position as before...How can I get my hands forward without forcing it in an unnatural way...? I'm also finding that keeping my head behind the ball on the downswing is holding the low point back as well. If I let my upper body and head go forward with the hips it moves in front of the ball but I read everywhere you shouldn't do that?

    • Day 319 - More mirror work, same focus on finishing higher and more towards the target. 
    • Day 135: worked on putting bead for a while with the 2 cups drill. 
    • Day 211 (29 Nov 24) - Friday men’s round albeit a solo foursome (temps in the 40’s, day after Thanksgiving and the average age closer to 75 - I’m a youngster at 65).  Interesting day of semi-solid play (8 of 18 GIR). Hit all four par threes in one (a first) - parred each; still had a couple 3 putt bogies; and blew up on 3 of the par 5’s (go figure)). The blow ups were some serious tree rattlers - amplifying how I got stupid and greedy instead of smart and content to just get back in the short stuff. 
    • Day 60 - 2024-11-29 Got about 3.5' of snow today, so I was going to go to Golf Evolution, but… I only left the house to throw some snow. Instead, i checked out my putting stroke on HackMotion in the basement. Turns out… it's pretty good, and I'm very in touch with what I'm doing.
    • First time playing this game, Spanish is my native language. It was impossible for me. After 4 worlds I run out of worlds that have the letters I've already found that can be combined with the remaining letters.. just repeated the 4th world to knew the answer. I know the world but it never came to my mind.
