what is the best way to handle this shot. im talking about where the ball is exactly on the border of the fringe and the rough around the green. the past 3 times ive had this shot i screwed it up leaving it way short. the rough doesnt let u put because u can only really contact top of the ball and chipping is also tough

I use a putting stroke with the toe of a 7-iron to chip in those circumstances. Works for me.

I use the blade of my most lofted club and try to just pick it out of there. Not a fun shot.

Or you could do what Tiger did in the Masters a couple years ago when he holed that amazing chip with the ball sitting right on the collar of 6+ inch rough. He put the ball way back in his stance, outside of his back foot, took a dangerously steep swing and came down almost directly on top of the ball. How he controlled the distance of that shot I'll never know. I guess that's why he's Tiger.

ya ive had the shot 3 times this season and all 3 i left it way short or way past due to not being able to make good contact. i may try and less lofted club chip or possibly just a stab type of shot but when doing that u really gotta contact the ball perfectly

I receive some useful advice from others on the board regarding this same thing. Some tips were:

Open up the club face on a lofted iron and strike as though it was a long putt. Don't decelerate. Go through the ball.

Play ball back in your stance. Putt with a hybrid or FW. This will get the ball out and slightly quicker.

Like golf_junkie said I would suggest using a hybrid or fairway metal, since it has a bigger head it cuts through the rough easily and then lands on the green and rolls like a putt.
