Hello Fellow Sand Trap Members!

My name is Paul and I have been playing golf on and off since I was about 8-9 years old. I've started playing golf again since 2013. I play golf anywhere between 1-4 times a week during the spring and summer weeks when I can. When I got back in the game, I was given a set of clubs from a friend of mine. It had a TaylorMade Driver, Irons, Putter, and a Cleveland Gap Wedge. Right now, I currently have a TaylorMade driver, Adams fairway woods, taylormade irons, Cleveland gap wedge, Fire Sole, Sand Wedge, and Knight Lob Wedge. I have already been playing this game seriously for already a few years and I have been having thoughts about some new clubs.

My current set of clubs are:

TaylorMade R1 Driver- 12 degrees

Adams Tight Lies Air Assault 3 wood and 5 wood

Taylormade 360 Irons (4 to PW)

Cleveland 52 degree wedge

Fire Hawk Sand Wedge

Knight 60 degree wedge

I have been to my local Golfsmith store already looking at some new golf clubs and this is the set configuration I had in mind (From Driver to Wedge):

Driver: TaylorMade R15 (430 cc clubhead, 12 degrees)

Fairway Wood: TaylorMade RBZ Stage 2 (3 wood- 15 degrees)

Hybrids: TaylorMade AeroBurner (3 hybrid, 4 hybrid, 5 hybrid)

Irons: Ping G30 (6 Iron, 7 Iron, 8 Iron, 9 Iron)

Titleist Vokey SM5 Wedges: (48.08 F Grind, 52.02 F Grind, 56.10 M Grind, 60.10 K Grind)

This here is my desired set of clubs from the driver down to the wedge.

The main question I have is, what kind of golf clubs should I be looking to get, I put up my set configurations (current and future) and I was wondering what would your take be on current clubs versus looking into new ones.

Thanks and happy golfing!!!!

Time to get fitted for clubs. The possible new clubs you have identified are all good clubs, if they fit you.

Also, how are you scoring? For irons you may be on the line between SGI and GI (classifications from Golf Digest's annual Hot List) .

As for the RBZ.s2 fairway wood, try both the 3W and the 3W/HL (high launch - other OEMs call it a 4W). Many golfers find they can hit a 4W more reliably - and sometimes farther - than a 3W.

As for wedges, right now you have a mixed bag. Most people get better distance continuity if the wedges come from the same model. If you are spending the $$$ on SM5 wedges, get custom fit. Vokey has not only loft/bounce and sole-grind options, but also a variety of shafts.

Focus, connect and follow through!

Go to a pro fitting place and see how you are hitting your current clubs versus your proposed new set.  Whatever set you get has to be custom fitted.  If you are not seeing a major improvement, be it distance, dispersion, contact, control, spin etc., do not change for the sake of changing.  The new set sounds good though

What's in the bag

  • Taylor Made r5 dual Draw 9.5* (stiff)
  • Cobra Baffler 4H (stiff)
  • Taylor Made RAC OS 6-9,P,S (regular)
  • Golden Bear LD5.0 60* (regular)

    • Is it? I bought the Stack radar to replace my PRGR based on what Stack told me! When I am swinging for speed, the PRGR would miss 50%-80% of my backswings due to a higher speed. The stack seldom misses those- at least for me.
    • As an analyst by nature, I would like to compare the scores under both systems. It is something we can easily do if we have the data. I actually thought the new system was less fair to those whose game was on the decline - like mine! Old: Best 10 of last 20 scores with the .96 multiplier. Course handicap excluded course rating and overall par. New: Best 8/20. Course handicap includes course rating -par. My understanding is Stableford caps scores at Net double bogey like stroke play. If so, handicap should be slower to rise because you are only using 8 versus 10 scores. If I am missing something, I am curious enough to  want to understand what that may be. My home course tees that I play are 72.1/154 now. My best score out here is 82. When my game started to decline, my handicap didn’t budge for 13 rounds because of good scores in my first 8! I know I am an anomaly but my handicap has increased almost 80% in the past few years (with only a few rounds this year). For a few months I knew I was losing every bet because my game was nowhere near my handicap. I suspect I have steamrolled a few nuances but that shouldn’t matter much. When I have modeled this with someone playing the same tees and course, one good round, or return to form, will immediately reduce the handicap by some amount.
