Playing in 45 degree weather into about a 2-club wind. Playing to a elevated green (170 to the hole, 155 to the front edge) from a decent lie in the fairway. I decide to hit a knockdown 5-iron and run it up.

A knockdown to an elevated green? I suppose you didn't have a lot of choice into that wind, but I thought that a curious choice.

I probably do that fairly often when windy. When you have to deal with midwest crosswinds, you never really know how the wind is blowing higher in the air.

what shot would you have played?

Probably would've taken two extra clubs; it would seem to me that a lower shot into an elevated green could hit into the upslope and stop. But do bear in mind that you've got 11 strokes on me in handicap.
