Ok so I have a half finished basement in my house that leaves me with quite a bit of room to put in a putting green. I plan on just using 2x4s as floor joists so I can use actual cups. I'm thinking about making it 12ft x 16ft and placing a hole at each corner and giving it a flat side and a side with 3 or 4 inches of slope.

My question is has anyone else done anything like this and do you have any recommendations of things to do or not to do?

Also I would like to know what kind of covering I can use to make it a decent putting surface. I really don't want to spend hundreds of dollars on putting green turf when some low cut carpet rolls about the same. Is there any brand or style of carpet anyone would recommend?

I have not built my own, but I own this one which sits in my living room.

I can really only do straight putts but I have been thinking I could experiment by adding some angled cardboard under it to get some break added.

@iacas shows how he built one like you are talking about here.

Never taken on a project quite that extensive, I took the cheap way out. Found some green outdoor carpet at home depot. Its furry but short and smooth. It provides decent roll and produces kind of a medium fast pace very similar to most local munis greens. 25 dollars bought me quite a bit of the stuff and next to putting greens in golf stores, its the next nicest thing Ive found. Good luck and ket us know how it turns out!
