How can they piss on the LA Open by calling it that? I thought is was one of those tournaments opposite a WGC event when I saw the schedule. What a shame that we ***** out to sponsors naming tournaments.

Especially using a sponsor with a name like "Northern Trust." Makes it sound like the event is in Detroit or something.

I want to be clear. I certainly don't mean to disparage Detroit. I only mean to suggest that L.A. is one of the most evocative American place-names and that nothing it evokes is at all "northern" (or "southern," "midwestern," or "eastern" for that matter).

Just in case this doesn't go with out saying...

As long as it's still at Riviera I don't care what they call it. What a gem that course is.

Fair enough.

... as opposed to when it was the Nissan Open?

Northern Trust puts up a great deal of money to name the tournament. That's money that is being raised for various charities by the PGA Tour - a not-for-profit (formerly called "non-profit", until people realized that it just sounded like a mismanaged company) organization. I don't know if the NFL or MLB are not-for-profit, but the PGA Tour raises tons of money for charities at each of their events. If a company is willing to sponsor this and assist in the efforts, I'm all for it.

then why not call it the LA Open sponsored by Northern Trust. Sounds better. Although, then you get into the pet peeves of "the ABC Open sponsored by large company and presented by another large company" as your name.

You can also check out the Justin Timberlake tournament for another grand idea on naming a tournament.

The people running the Fall Series must really be desperate if they wanted Justin Timberlake, of all people, hosting their event. I mean, are you freakin kidding me?????? What a joke, and an even worse idea, and I didn't think it could get any worse, than George Lopez hosting the Hope.

You are mostly right. I think the nature of the response, at least on my part, is the (innocuously and humorously) inappropriate name of this particular sponsor at this particular event.

Golf World columnist John Hawkins also doesn't like the name.

It is kinda a lame name, but a sponsor is a sponsor. At least the tournament isn't getting dropped (although I couldn't imagine The Riviera being taken off the tournament trail) I'd like to see it called The L.A. Open *brought to you by Northern Trust. I guess Nissan dropped out becuase they are building a production plant in Alabama, and moving their headquarters from L.A. to AL. Since a kid I've always known it is the Nissan Open. It was always fun to check out the new line of cars as I walked through the entrance. Oh well. I guess I'll see a bunch of financial planners trying to get me to open a ROTH IRA of something.
