Hitting irons with too much difference overlap

New poster here from CT. So here we go. I'm a 28 year old 2 handicap former college golfer. Last few years I started getting back into the game and playing decent. My bag is mp33's with s300's, standard everything, that's how I measure up after fitting. I'm very strong and hit the woods and hybrids as far as I should. My question has to do with my wedge/irons distances being weird. I feel like I should be getting more distance out of my long irons and a more defined difference gap in short irons/wedges. Also I have a weird distance around 160-170 were I'm either laying on 8 or hitting a baby 7. I hit plenty of greens and lose all my strokes with the putter, I'm just curios and would like to see some opinions. Here's a list on full swings:

3i 210-220

4i 190-210

5i 180-190

6i 175-185

7i 165-180

8i 140-160

9i 120-145

pw 110-125

51w 85-120

55w 50-100

60w 0-60

Now obviously I can hit any of these clubs different lengths based on shot type and generally just take a tough yardage and hit everything by feel. I hit around 13 greens per round so that isn't a huge issue, I was just wondering why my yardage a seem so weird. They may not be weird at all, and I'm overanalyzing the strength of my game. Thanks

Your irons are forged blades so the lofts could be off a degree or so. Maybe it is time to get them checked and possibly re-bent

Your 7 iron overlaps with the 6 iron, so you could have it bent a degree weaker to address the gap issue with the 8 iron. Other than that it looks fine. My wedges have a good amount of overlap depending on conditions and how I want to hit the ball. For reference, my wedges look like this:

60* : 0-110 yards

56*: 80-125 yards

52*: 115-140 yards

Pw: 135-155 yards

Overlap in wedges is nice, at least to me, because it means I can choose to either hit a lower approach that releases slightly (if the green slants towards me a full wedge shot will spin it off the front) or hit a higher shot that will stick firmer greens regardless of the distance. I also do like to hit knock down approach shots with my wedges in general, since I've found I have better overall control hitting that way, which contributes to having such large ranges that I use all the different wedges from.

There's a lot of variance in your distances with your short irons. I'm guessing you are looking at total distance rather than just variation in carry distance. If you do have that much variance in carry distance with your short irons you are probably 'swinging out of your shoes' too much or should focus on your swing consistency rather than the clubs.

IMO carry distance is more relevant for mid and short irons since the expectation is hitting into a somewhat receptive green.

    • It may not have been block practice, though, is one of the main points here. You may have been serving and from the same place, but you were likely trying to do slightly different things. It seems that would only be blocked practice if you were trying to hit the same exact ball hit to you to the same exact place in the far court. I'm not sure that's as random as if the ball that you're given to hit is at different places, too, but again…
    • I played tennis in college. I thought block practice was great for serves because you were starting the point and  you could easily adjust where you wanted to place the ball based off the same motion. I equate those to tee balls. I despised block practice for groundstrokes once you reached a certain level and your fundamentals were good. To me, hitting a 100 crosscourt backhands in a row was silly because I would never do that in a match. I needed to randomize it by hitting some deep, some angled, all with different speeds and spins. I share that same thought about iron play. Because we seldom hit the same approach shots hole after hole, I prefer to practice irons randomly.
