I'm wearing holes in my golf gloves (Footjoy) on the fleshy part of my hand (left) about midway between the base of my pinky finger and the outside of my wrist. My gloves only remain usable for about two rounds before they split wide open. I can see signs of abrasion on a new glove after 15-20 swings.

I'm always fighting a tendency to collapse my left arm just prior to impact, which allows my left wrist to collapse and produces duck hooks off the toe. I've recently been concentrating on maintaining a firm left arm through impact, keeping the left wrist flat or slightly bowed at impact. My shots have improved, but this glove thing is new, so I know I'm doing something wrong.

I've never had this problem before and I know these gloves aren't defective because I've worn holes in the last six I've purchased.

Any ideas of what I'm doing wrong? I can't help but think my grip must be defective, allowing the club to twist in my left hand during the swing.

Where should a golf glove show signs of wear or stress if the player is gripping the club properly?

Thank you

are you gripping too tight?
on a scale of 1(weakest) to 10(strogest), what do you think your grip pressure is?

the same spot on my glove has turned black after 3 months but no way near wearing out a hole

try to grip the club more in your fingers and not so much in the palms.

Someone said to grip your clubs as though you are holding a tub of tooth paste with the cap off and your grip pressure will not allow the paste to come out.

I saw on the golf channel with Lessons from the Pros, I think it was Brad Faxon who had you grip the club and he would pull the club from you and see how loose your arms were when he moved your club up and down. If you were holding too tight he could feel it and the your arms would not be nice and loose.

Loosening your grip or re-gripping the club at the top of your backswing may cause this. I have a fairly loose grip with consistent pressure. I will eventually get discoloration and slight wear in the same area, but I've never worn a hole in a glove.

If your wearing holes in the glove at that spot you need to grip down on the grip about 1/2" to 1 ". Your palm should not be hanging over the end of the club, It will not help to hit the ball farther if you grip over the end. A proper grip will also give you better control of the club during the swing.

This sounds like reasonable advice. I also wear holes in my gloves near the bottom of my palms opposite my thumb (albeit after prolonged use - I'm cheap!), and I do tend to grip the club with the butt of the shaft hitting about right there.

Thanks for your replies.

My subjective assessment of grip pressure would be 3.5-4 on a 10 point scale. I really don't put a death grip on the club because I've learned my distance and accuracy are much better with light grip pressure. But I may be letting it get too loose at the top and then re-gripping as I start down, as Fried Egg suggested, allowing the grip to slide around and act like sandpaper on the glove.

I have short fingers so I buy small gloves because I don't like any loose glove hanging off the ends of my fingers, but the small gloves do fit awfully tight. Maybe I'd be better served with a medium-sized glove.

And you're right golfchief, I grip the club at the very end (thinking this will create a wider arc and more clubhead speed) with part of the left hand actually extending past the butt of the club. I'll move my hands down the club 1/2-1 inch. That may be the primary cause of the problem.

Thanks again

Perhaps since women seem to have skinnier, shorter fingers you should try a women's glove. Just a suggestion..

I also have short fingers and buy my gloves in cadet size., Have you tried the cadet size gloves? The only difference in a cadet model glove is the fingers are shorter.

Thanks miney and golf chief.

I'm embarrassed to admit I've never known or thought to ask what "cadet" size meant. A medium glove in cadet size might be just the ticket.

I'll try on some women's gloves and see how they fit. I suspect women's gloves would be too small because my fingers, while short, aren't thin, but I'll try a few on and see how they feel.

To bring back an old post...

I have a consistent wear pattern on the middle of my glove's left thumb, where the thumb contacts the grip. After a few round tears grow there.

I think I may be re-gripping at the top...and the right hand movement is causing friction in the left thumb. Any ideas?

I wear out my gloves right at the heel of my left hand. My instructor said it's from re-gripping at the top and letting the club rub on that spot of the glove. It seems to be getting worse. I wore through my first "summer" glove in about 2 months. Then I wore through a winter glove in about 2 weeks. Now my new summer glove is about to wear through after about 2 rounds and 3 trips to the range.

When was the last time the grips on your clubs were changed? Old grips will tear the blazes out of your gloves and hands.

I don't know. They are borrowed irons. The driver, putter and one wedge are brand spanking new. I'm not concerned about the grips at this point. I get new clubs this weekend! We'll see if they make a difference. Thanks for the tip, though.

What kind of grips do you use? If you are using cord grips they will tear a glove up quicker then anything.

    • For someone with a very consistent swing speed and ball strike, upgrades may improve performance. For everyday golfers, probably not. I'm a rather odd player. I usually get best performance from basic pro or tour heads, but with lighter stock shaft from the model's standard driver set up. (Yes, current EXS is an exception.) When I get a full driver fitting, I usually try a couple of modest upgrade  (not super magic) shafts. Most of the time upgrade gives a couple of extra yards, or 10 yards less. Remember this about stock shafts: They are matched to a particular driver model to fit the type of player likely to adopt that model. Also, most OEMs offer a variety of stock shafts in their drivers. Test for which one works best. And, the final decider...
    • Uh, seeing you're having trouble with hit-and-miss performance from inherited clubs... Get Fitted! IF the 910H pair don't work, swap them out. Also, only two degrees separation in loft is not much. You might consider a 4W (much more reliable than a 3W) plus hybrid. This would give more distance separation than two Hs. For hybrid, get one you can hit... Maybe a more benevolent 4H. Quite often I try to brand match my bridge clubs (FWs and Hs), and my irons and wedges... but not always. Whatever works!
    • Like others have said, get fitted. Since 2011, I have played some combination of 4W + 7W. I had a Cobra 3H and 4H a couple of years back, and would swap out the 7W for a 3H in cold months (keep out of cold wind, and rough thinner for wayward drives.) The 7W matched up with yardage often with 3H; the current 4H goes almost as long as 7W, but has a lower trajectory. 4H also bumped out 4i in last bag redo; I learned to hit stinger with 4H so that's my driving iron on tight holes with shallow landing area. Again, a side-by-side test will tell you which way to go. If 5W or 3H is meh, keep the 7W. Also, are you looking to replace the 7W with a 5W or 3H, or add a second bridge club (5W or 3H) to your bag?
    • Makes sense and aligns with other literature. Static stretching, especially for longer durations, can impede performance in strength and power activities. I would not want to do like hamstring, quad, and calf stretches then go immediately sprint. To me that sounds like a terrible Idea. I would rather start off walking, then jogging, then running, then ramp up to sprinting.  To me, static stretching isn't even a warmup activity. I like the term warmup; you want to get some exertion going before the activity.      a { text-decoration: none; color: #464feb; } tr th, tr td { border: 1px solid #e6e6e6; } tr th { background-color: #f5f5f5; }
    • Going to Florida for the usual February golf trip, and with our current weather, that date won't get here soon enough. Heading to Augusta GA for the Tuesday Master's practice round, will definitely get some golf in while I'm in the area for a few days. Hope to be able to catch up with @coachjimsc if he's around. Then it's back to Scotland first of July.  Playing 7 new courses, can't wait for that.  Then somewhere after that is the Rhode Island CC Member-Guest and then my normal October golf trip to Myrtle Beach.
