Hey guys,

My name is Jackson and I am 16 years old from Melbourne. I just got into golf roughly 5 - 6 months ago and I love it! I started off on a handicap of 21 and I am now down to a handicap of 4.6. I shoot in the low to mid 70's each week and I have played 3 rounds under par with my best being 4 under par on a par 71 course. My home club is Neangar Park I am yet to have a lesson but will start working with my club pro very soon! My goal by the end of this year will be to be at scratch! It is a long journey but I am working really hard to get there. I am training in the gym 3 times a week and practicing at the course everyday. I wake up at 5:45am every morning to head to the gym and practice after school for 4 hours.

So my question is, do you think I have any chance in making golf a career starting golf at such a late age?

Thank you in advance, Jackson

I don't think your age is a problem.  I would suggest to make it a goal to play college golf.  Get on your high school team (your index should be good plenty enough), get some tournament results, identify colleges with a good golf program, see if you can get in.  Even if you don't make the team as a freshman, if you keep improving you could try out the next year.  When you're visiting out schools, try to talk to the golf coach and get a feel for if you could get on the team.

I don't know about Australia, but in the US I would say you could play college golf somewhere, not D1 or anything, with a 3-4 handicap.

Good luck!  When you need a caddie on tour, don't forget your buddy, Rainmaker!

Dropping from double digits to a low single digit hncp in 6 months, and shooting a 67, I would say you a great shot at a decent career in golf.

Your practice regimen seems to be working quite well for you. Two things I would caution you on is "burn out", and don't neglect your education.

Play in some tournaments to get a feel for tournament pressure. Make sure you have, or can develope the competitiveness to play against better golfers.

As for working with your club pro, make you two are on the same pages when it comes to "YOUR" instruction. Your pro is there for "YOUR" benefit, not their's. Your pro should be able to teach at "YOUR" level of undestanding. Ask questions, and make sure you understand what the instructor is trying to teach. It is also "YOUR" responsibility to understand what's being taught.

Good luck on your endeavor. Have fun, respect the game, and play well. P
