Google Earth is a great way to get approximate distances. I create a little card from a spreadsheet as a guide for courses I'm playing for the first time. I map out the landing area and get my distances to hazards. You can also get an idea of elevation change because GE gives you altitude as well. Basically you get to virtually see the course ahead of time.
