PW and 56* SW here. Am considering a 50* as the PW is 47*

Why go with the unbalanced loft on the GW?

47 + 3 = 50 50 + 6 = 56 There's a 9° difference between your PW and SW. Why not get the GW more in the middle, like say, 51° or 52°? 47 + 4 = 51 51 + 5 = 56 or... 47 + 5 = 52 52 + 4 = 56

This is the exact same set up I am considering as I already have the 45, 50 and 58.

Do you find you get the expected distance gaps? Since my (current) PW and GW differ by 6 degrees, I expected a 15 yard gap between them. Or is the 10-yard expected gap for 4 degrees only on irons? In any case, thanks; I think I'll be doing for 45-50-54-58 in a few months when I get my next set of irons.

Today, the pitching wedge is a wedge in name only. The gap wedge, as we know, was born of neccessity and greed after the OEMs consented to the distance (phony) war in the 1990s.

agreed. The Evolution of Iron Lofts my current setup is 47/52/58. the 52 is great from the fairway for me and also a good greenside chipper/bump and run. i used to do 4 wedges (48/52/56/60), but with hybrids coming around to the mainstream with some good options available (and taking the spot of my old 2 iron/5 wood/4th wedge swap spot), i'm going to try that route for now and drop one wedge. only problem is i'm starting to view the pitching wedge in my titleist 735's as just a 10 iron... which would put me at only 2 wedges

That article is quite interesting. I was wondering what the lofts used to be. Makes me feel a bit odd about my next set having a 45 degree PW. But it's better than a 43.5 degree PW, which one set I sampled had. It said I'd hit my PW 10 yards further with their set, and it seemed to be the case. Then I looked up the loft. I was wondering what my wedge configuration would be if my PW had that.

only problem is i'm starting to view the pitching wedge in my titleist 735's as just a 10 iron... which would put me at only 2 wedges

Yeah. Viewing the PW as a 10-iron doesn't hurt. I've seen some sets have 10 and 11 irons (PW, GW) and just label them as such.

    • Not to take away from the OP's question but the Snell 3.0 is about all you could ask for in a ball. I'm not a paid spokesman and my opinion does not reflect on the owner of the site. Lexi Thompson could beat most people with a Top Flite, or a Nitro. Ben Griffin? He doesn't offer a lot of street cred so I'll pass. Now if Fat Perez or Heavy Ballesteros start using it then?????? 😀
    • Just read that Peter Oosterhuis passed away. He was the one and only celebrity I have asked for an autograph! In September 2007, I was in the Charlotte Airport awaiting a flight reading my October 2007 Golf Magazine. It was during the FedEx playoffs and Tiger had just won the previous tournament with the Tour Championship the next event. I watched the event listening to the dulcet tones of Peter Oosterhuis, among others. I opened the magazine, and started reading an article about Oosterhuis and the opening picture had him posing as James Bond in a movie’s opening sequence. I looked up from the article and he was sitting directly across from me!    I approached and showed him the article and asked if he would sign the photo. Mr. Oosterhuis asked “Are you keen on golf?” When I responded positively, we spoke for about 10 minutes discussing the fact that both Phil and Tiger had won FedEx events prior to the Tour Championship. He was very gracious and a wonderful storyteller. I was saddened by his battles with dementia and missed him on CBS’s telecasts.
    • Day 50. Hand path follow through and face control technique work. 🤯 in a good way.
    • I have been playing the Tour X for several years and find it to be a great ball. I buy them at Golf Galaxy and they often run sales. Was able you buy a box of 48 for $90 after applying a coupon from Dick’s Sporting Goods. I am a big fan!
    • This keeps being a great reminder.
