Has anyone ever played any courses in my city?

I've been to a few club courses and many city courses around the city, but I'm always looking for new places... nothing like your first time on a brand-new course.

The only Memphis course I've played is Memphis Country Club, a Donald Ross gem. I remember the caddies dressed in Augusta-type white jumpsuits and the smallish greens being very, very fast.

I live relatively close to Memphis and I've played three courses in the area: the Cherokee Valley Course ( once for a charity event ), the Memphis Country Club ( great old design, very penal narrow fairways with deep rough and small, very fast greens ), and Spring Creek ( a Jack Nicklaus designed course with wide fairways, large undulating greens and some of the most beautiful fauna ever seen on a golf course ). Spring Creek, my favorite in the region, is in the Collierville area, a few miles outside Memphis. There are rumors that the Stanford/St. Jude Tournament will be moved to that course. Additionally, as much as I love the facilities at the Memphis Country Club, the Spring Creek Club House will probably be considered the finest in the region.

All in all, the Memphis area has some fine courses and a rich golfing history. Which courses in Memphis are your favorites and why?

I have only played a few courses so far, but I can tell you which I like the best out of what I played

Auduban : Decent fairways/greens, close to my house, and nice practice greens. But, the course is way to short and narrow, it is lined by city streets, and the course is very simple in design. All straight lines to holes, hardly any elevation change, and the course makes you feel like you are playing on a bowling alley... there are people on both sides of you at all times.

Riverside : Very nice course. Brand new clubhouse, very few visitors, and it's right by the river. Kind of a long drive from anywhere but downtown, but the quality makes up for it. Also, the rate to play at this City Course is $3 less than the other city courses.

Pine Hills : One of my favorite courses. It's in an old part of town that most people consider a "bad" neighborhood, but I absolutely love the course. Lots of trees, obstacles, and interesting holes. The dog-leg right on the front nine is probably my favorite hole on the course.

Memphis Athletic Ministries Army Depot : The land was donated by the government a while back, and they have made a fine golf course out of it. They sponsor the First Tee of Memphis program, and for being run strictly on donations, it is actually a very fine course. It is free to play during the week (it is closed on Sat. and Sun.) although if you enjoy your game, they would appreciate a donation, no matter how small the amount. There are fully developed trees covering the entire course, well manicured greens (as well as can be expected from a donation course), and a very interesting course lay-out. Certain holes make you shoot hill-to-hill... some make you shoot downhill into a valley... you have to cross a lake, a pond, and 2 canals... and the two times I've been there, there has been no one playing in front or behind me. It is very nice being able to take your time while playing.

These are the courses that stick out in my mind right now for both good and bad reasons

Sorry to be off topic here, but I really don't like this particular thread. Reason being: it's been years since I've been to Memphis, and now I won't be able to get Rendezvous ribs out of my mind!

Guess I'd better be taking notes on some of these courses...gonna have to come back! I think I could talk Wifey Dearest into that trip; she's not a golfer but we did get engaged in Memphis. I can sell her on that whole "for the memories" crap. LOL

Haha...

Yes, the Rende does have the best BBQ in Memphis, but man finding parking is horrible... not to mention even finding the alley that the front door leads to. I feel like Columbo trying to find that place sometimes. It sucked when they closed the Public Eye too... they had the best lamb I've ever tasted.

Why is it that every topic about Memphis invariably always gets turned towards BBQ?

And I never knew Memphis had such a golf following in it... I always thought we were simply the home of John Daly and everyone laughed behind our backs (Wooo.. go John! See you at Hooters...)

We might all need to start planning a day or weekend this spring for everyone from around Memphis to get together and play a few rounds

I courted my wife at the Dixon Gallery and Gardens, a jewel of a museum. We ate at Latourelle when Erlin Jenson was the chef. We became engaged at the Peabody. We probably have more friends in Memphis than we do in Mississippi. For all its problems, Memphis is one of the finest communities in the south. And, for the record, for this peckerwood, at least, Interstate BBQ beats the hell out of the Rendevouz any day of the week!

Hail, Memphis! Hip, hip hooray! Bring wifey back!

If you make it into Memphis again soon, I suggest you try the new Whole Hog Cafe. Best pulled/sliced meat in the city. It's in the Lynnfield Center right before you cross the interstate on Quince.

I got invited to go play at Southwind next weekend, so it looks like I'll probably have a chance to go embarrass myself on a new course soon. Anything I should know about the course in advance?

Thank goodness I have another week to practice

I shall try the Whole Hog Cafe on your recommendation.

Good luck at Southwind. By the way, since you're in the area, you might want to try River Bend Links in Robinsonville: very good links style course and very inexpensive. Also, you may wish to try Tunica National ( that sounds really strange to those of us who grew up here; Tunica County was for many years the poorest county in the 48 adjacent states ): very young but fine layout, also inexpensive and fun.

Well, there are no courses "close" to downtown really. Can you play private courses?? That's the big question.

Private: Colonial CC South course. (Ranked #5 course in TN) TPC Southwind Memphis CC (probably the closest to downtown) Public: Tunica National, Cottonwoods (both by the Casinos) Galloway, Plantation- in Olive Branch

These are good suggestions. If you know a member, the Memphis Country Club is the nicest course that is closest to downtown. Also, a private course which probably has some members from Nashville you may know is Spring Creek. However, that is well out from downtown.

Have fun!

Thanks for the advice!

You might check to see if your club has a reciprocal arrangement with any club in Memphis. My dinky little Mississippi Delta club has one with the vaunted Memphis Country Club, as well as other clubs in the region. Your club may have similar arrangements.

Thanks for the tip! Unfortunately we don't. I live in a small po-dunk town outside of Nashville. Guess our connections arent very good.

Well, nonetheless, good luck with your trip. Memphis is a pretty good golf town and an otherwise fun community. Let us know how things turn out.
