7I recently bought a set of irons off ebay with stiff KBS C Taper .370. I plan on tipping them to try and get the flex, launch, and length closer to what i need. I currently play kbs tour stiff and hit the ball high and short and im hoping to get a little less spin on my iron shots and maybe a little more distance because ive lost alot as of late, but that is not the biggest priority.

My question is, how much can ypu tip a parallell c taper? Is there a way to judge how much room i have before i run out of the tip section? Also, how significant would it be if i tipped it to say a 6.5 -7.0 frequency, whould it poorly affect my game as much as it seems with a swing speed that is weak righy now? Spin is my main issue, ive always played x stiff in my driver and love it because of the lessened spin.

So How much could i conceivable tip these shafts? How much potentially should I? I need to take 2.5 inches some how but i would prefer not to have to butt cut them.

Any other issues I could potentially run into in this endeavor? Thanks

Your post has a lot of moving parts, and I'm concerned you may be talking past yourself in a couple of places.

The "high and short" might indicate you're fighting your shafts, and trying to help the club get the ball up. This could lead to flipping, although that would be odd in a 2.4 HDCP player. Have you had a torso or hip injury lately that's cutting down on your clubhead speed?

Next, shaft comparisons:

  • Your current KBS Tour stiff has FCM = 6.0 / mid launch, low-mid spin, 130 grams weight.
  • New eBay KBS C-Taper stiff has FCM = 6.2 / low launch, low spin, 135 grams

(OEMs normally only list torque for graphite shafts, usually for long clubs; steel shafts are normally low torque)

You would need to define swing speed that is weak. What specifically do you mean?

And, you have not told us the following:

  • Your current iron model (what type of head)
  • Your new eBay iron model (what type of head)
  • What ball you use

Club head design also influences ball flight and spin, as does type of ball.

Before you start trimming shafts, I would suggest you get on a launch monitor with a skilled fitter, and find out just what your problem is.

The KBS C-Taper would already be close to where  you want to be. But if you're hitting the ball "high and short" it may be a swing flaw. You might make sure it's not a swing flaw before you start cutting shafts.

Your homework:

  • Get some launch monitor data. (Is it shaft, swing, or ball?)
  • Read up on hardstepping (+1 HS would be about all you'd need, if you need a heavier, stiffer shaft and not a swing tweak).
