Good day all,

I am interested in hearing about gaps between woods. My wedges are 50*, 54*, & 58*. My irons, Ping "G", are set in their respective gaps. What about my "woods" ?  What is a common, best practice, gapping for the woods. I need a starting place.

I have a 10.5* driver, 16.5* 3wood, a 21* 7 wood. My hybrid is 23*, or can loft it up to 25*.

So should I, knowing that the distance is the real gap that I need to focus on, put in a 5 hybrid at 25* and leave my current hybrid at 23*? Should I put in a 5 wood at 18*? ???

Please be kind on the bashing that is about to ensue.

Thinking about this ... should I have an 15* and 18* fairway wood? etc?

For your woods...

your SLDR tools are both HL (high launch), so you are really packing a 4W + 7W combination. This is a popular alternative to 3W + 5W...// 4 + 7 gives you a little extra loft to help launch. (Average golfer hits 4W more reliably than 3W)

If the 4W + 7W works, keep it that way. How often would you use a third FW? You bridge in nicely between woods and irons with hybrids.

I would suggest finding the distance gap between your 7W and 5i, and set a single hybrid to bridge it.

If you keep those 4 wedges, this will give you even gapping close to the green - which will help your scores a lot more than an extra club for 190 yards out.

Happy hunting! Let us know how it works out.

Any issues in the gaps in the woods?

Here's the specs on your bridge clubs...

Should be 20+ yards between FWs...

possibly 20 yds. between 24 H1 and FW,

possibly 25 yds. between 24 H and 6i.

If you want to shave off some yards at longer range, choke down a little on the club.

Clubfitting is all about trade-offs. If you use 4 wedges well, then learn to live with lesser precision from 190 to 210 yards. If you have confidence in your clubs - especially your longer clubs - this will allow you more peace of mind during rounds.

Again, let us know how these gaps work out.

    • Is an ill-fit putter wrecking your stroke? Here's how to know A putter that fits enhances three critical aspects of your setup: hip orientation, hand and shoulder relationship and eye position. I know Todd Sones is a renowned instructor but eyes over the ball is not a putting fundamental! I have spoken to many instructors - from David Orr, Bruce Rearick, and Mike Shannon, and they all want you to set up where you see the line properly. I have watched numerous fittings for Odyssey, Cameron, LAB, and general fittings, and may have seen two people who were fit with their eyes over the ball. Most were inside by at least 0.5”, or so. I think eyes over the ball hurts more strokes than it helps.
