After another mixed-bag round with periods of okay shots, the odd good shot and some complete duffs, I was thinking about how long it takes most people to get past that stage.

To me, as someone who has only played 4-5 months, I feel as though once I become able to consistently strike the ball well on 80%+ of shots I will come to get more enjoyment out of the game.

So I was curious about roughly how long it took you guys to get past the stage of worrying about simply making good contact with the ball, to the point where you're just thinking about slightly thin/fat shots or misdirection. I know even good players have horrible shots but I'm talking about where you step up and 8/10 shots are at least struck well. Obviously how often you played and had lessons are factors that would be worth mentioning.

Too tough to say. I know 3 handicappers who feel they don't strike the ball solidly enough.

I am consistently practicing, and/or playing 3-4 times a week. :-P

That said, I think it depends on one's talent for the game, and how much "quality" time they spend on their game.

Myself, I had some talent for the game. Once I took the game some what seriously, my consistency showed up in about 6-8 months.  I was consistently posting scores in the mid to high 80s. Sure there were some 90+ scores every once in a while, but I never felt embarrassed by my game. From there, my game constently better. I think it took me a year to finally break 80.

    • I had a few tweeks in the bag. I took out my Mizuno pro FliHi 3 iron replaced it with a Titleist GT2 7 Wood. what a change that is, so easy to hit, it goes so high without it ballooning on me. I couldn't get rid of my callaway woods ( Rogue ST Max LS ) but changed the shafts to Diamana BB 63 stiff for the driver and 73 stiff for the 3 wood. Than i got myself a new putter Odyssey S2S jailbird yes i joined the centershaft family
    • First off all i think you should use the same ball all the time. We all strive for consistency on the course, the only factor you can be sure it will be always the same is your ball if you always use the same. So i think we should always use the same. I recently switched from Titleist Pro V1x to Srixon Z-Star Diamond because it i get a bit softer feel around the greens and same results on driver and irons
