Those are better. Watch where the shaft points at the top, too. Bit over-rolled there (laid off).

Yeah - I'll keep an eye on that - I've been across the line for about forever, so I assume that I want to overexaggerate the laid off bit to get it closer to square when I take a real swipe at the ball.

Scooted over to the range today in the rain to see how it goes when I try to hit one. The rehearsals I think look reasonable, but then get worse when I try to hit the ball. I think it’s better than it was but still a ways to go. Including the rehearsals in these two videos. One dtl and one fo. I still don’t understand what I need to do on the way down to stop that fugly shoving outside of the hands. Seems unlikely that will just disappear when I get the backswing position right. I have a feeling that lack of understanding of the next step might be holding me back some.

Got told off yesterday for doing full swings and full speed swings so went to the range this lunchtime and did some slow speed stuff and freezers. A few videos from my session.

First few are DTL then some FO

This one is of me looking at the club on the way back. I think I get my arms lifting all the way back, not that you’d know because YouTube keeps glitching on me.

Second one is two slow backswings. This glitches the first one but the glitch looks like a pretty good position so I’ll live. Second one works. Then another swing back and hit. When I’m not watching or really focusing on it it seems that my upper arm doesn’t lift at first, rather stays roughly where it is and I add the lift at the end so the club comes a bit more inside. I think that’s what I’m going to focus on.

This one glitches a bit too but it’s really just pausing. This shows the club coming a bit more inside but not as laid off at the top

Then a couple of face on ones

And lastly one smoothie and one freezer at normal speed

Quite happy with how this went. I can see my arms are better when I take it slower. Also while I’m still pitching my arms out it doesn’t seem to be as extreme as yesterday. Light at the end of the tunnel 🙂

Range again today. A few freezers and a few smoothies. If I add a little speed I swing further arms go deeper and lower and more across again. Really like where this freezer got to on backswing:

This is a smoothie (ish). Clubhead tracks up the hands nicely but the things go a bit wrong:

At normal speed:

Lastly one shortish pitch shot. Pitching some days I come out and can drop it on the flag. Other days it’s going sideways. Like missing right or left by 10 yards from 50 yards and nothing in between. I suspect it’s from the hands coming out and the cut across. If I release it on that line it’s going left. If I hold it off it’s going right and then it’s timing. When it’s off it’s off. Feels like if I can get that under control it will tighten up a lot.

Trackman place today. I broke my tripod so could only film by hand the video the venue’s cameras generated. This is an 8 iron. Amazing how odd this feels relative to how it looks. Not similar!

They sure do. 158 with an 8 iron is on the high end for me

Down the line and face on from today. Still feeling like I’m sticking the club into a hole in the ceiling above my right shoulder and then big loop inside to start downswing. That’s how it feels. Not how it looks though! Gotta keep working on this for a bit but I see a lot of progress. 😁

Can be out and up a little more. Not quite over-done yet.

Thanks! Better though? Not worried about overdoing it yet. These were also the best videos of several I took. More to be done for sure but moving in the right direction I think.

Sorry - do you mean my right humerus or the club? Or both maybe?

Went to the range yesterday. Been working on lifting right arm more. For this session I figured I would just swing and see how it came out rather than focusing a ton on the arms. 7 iron:

Driver:

Still quite a bit more lifting to be doing I think although I think it’s moving in the right direction (slowly). I think part of my issue is the loop that I have to the outside. Sucking the club in and deep on the backswing helps me to manage that (it’s why I started doing it in the first place). So subconsciously it’s hard to make myself go out and up when if I loop it from there (as I’m doing in these videos) it’s even more steep and out to in. If I understand how to fix the loop out then I think that will help the backswing to fall into place.

Also spent a bit of time on distance wedges. I’m working on wider arms but making it narrower by leaning more towards the target. It feels like I’m moving a ton but it’s barely any different on camera. That loop is still there with these too (I even do it with my putting stroke 😭)

Little bit of work in the back yard today. I was going to submit a couple of videos for a follow up but I made a complete dogs breakfast of positioning the camera so that will have to wait.

First swing is a middle distance pitch. Trying not to slide my hips too far forward and keep right arm straighter. I think it’s a hair better but still to be worked on. Second swing is a full shot where I tried to really exaggerate lifting my arms. I swung too far so I think I’m losing it towards the end of the backswing, but it looks less flippy to me. I’m also hitting those plastic balls with holes in so not caring about outcome at all.

I'm wondering if there's a reason your priority isn't working on your pretty intense version of starting the downswing by thrusting your right hip towards the ball and rotating your shoulders, forcing you to pull way across the ball?

I was managing that by sucking the club inside and behind me so when I do that it brings it back to on plane. I'm trying to undo that first so I can fix it the right way.

I'm not sure I'm reading you right. You're trying to undo pulling the club across your body first?

If I'm reading that right, that's definitely backwards. It's what you're doing with your legs, hips, and chest that force you to do that. Impossible to fix the pull across without fixing the body first. If you "fix" that with your body doing what it is now, then you'll be swinging like a foot outside the ball and never make contact. I write "fix" because if you get your body moving the right way the pulling across the body problem will more or less fix itself, mostly if not perfectly.

If that's obvious and I'm misreading, I apologize.

What I'm saying is the club going out in transition is something I noticed a long time ago. I saw it, and my way to fix it at the time was on my backswing to suck it way inside and get my arms too deep (and too low it turns out), so that when I move the club out in transition it's moving it back to straight. I'm now trying to undo sucking the club inside. The club moves out like that now because it has to to get back to the ball from where I am at the top. If I get the club to the right place in the backswing then I can work on changing my downswing so I don't do that club out in transition thing. If I try to fix the body first, I won't be able to get the club back to the ball. I need to give myself the room to make the right move in transition.

    • I mean, a golfer is trespassing and damaging property. So, golf rules don’t supersede state laws. 😉 Like, if it isn’t marked and is off golf property. The right thing to do is take an unplayable lie or take stroke and distance.  Also, this is a liability for the course. The homeowner could easily say the course is liable for damage done because they knowingly didn't mark their boundaries which allowed golfers to trespass and damage property.
    • Interestingly enough, if the course (the Committee in Rules terms) doesn't mark the boundaries, there is nothing out of bounds.  I realize that neighboring homeowners would take a dim view of golfers whacking balls from their backyards, but that's what the Definition of Out of Bounds requires. "All areas outside the boundary edge of the course as defined by the Committee."
    • I had two events the past two days. Yesterday I was playing a course blind. Hit it solid. Hit 9/14 fairways, 12/18 greens, 34 putts. Many of those putts were the result of balls that were close-ish to the hole when they landed, but wound up a long way away once they'd finished rolling (backwards mainly). Then today, hit 11/13 fairways, 11/18 greens, 37 putts, and shot 80. 8 over par and it wasn't particularly pretty. My big problem today was my pitching. I was inside 100 yards of the hole and off the green on 9 occasions.  1st - drive to about 75 yards, fanned a 58 degree short and right. On the green, but a good 40 feet away and good two putt from there (so took 3) 2nd - laid up to a bunker and it's narrow past it, so had 165 in, missed it right with an 8 iron. Wet rough, chip from about 5 yards off the green and the club snagged. It got on the green, but only temporarily. Overcorrected a bit on the next one and hit it a bit firm and it rolled out to about 35 feet. Putt didn't break and it ran on a bit and I missed the one back (greens were fast and a little bumpy, which didn't help, but doesn't excuse either). (took 5 to get down from close to the green) 4th - had about 95 from the right rough, hit it on the green and two putts (3) 5th - 90 from the fairway, tugged it and it got a firm bounce, chipped on and hit what I thought was a decent chip, but it ran out down the hill and two putts from 20 feet (4) 7th - 65 from the fairway, significant upslope and hit it a bit hard, ran long left against the collar. Tried to blade a PW, but it got under a bit so didn't advance it anything like far enough. Made a good two putt from there (4) 11th - 63 from the fairway, hit a squirrelly pitch on the green and two putts (3) 12th - 75 from the semi-rough, caught it a bit clean and it wound up on the back edge. Putting down a tier and it ran 8 feet past (that was actually a really good putt and couldn't have done any better I don't think) and missed that (4) 13th - 55 from the fairway, overcorrected and hit the big ball before the small ball. Then made a stellar up and down from 25 yards short to an elevated green with a putter (3) 15th - down in three from a greenside bunker (3) That was it. The other 9 holes I hit it on the green from outside 100 yards. So on those 9 occasions, I took 32 shots to get in the hole. 3.56 average. Terrible. Reason I'm posting this in here is to see if anyone has any suggestions for how to work on my contact with pitch shots. I don't have access to a grass range. Only mats and it's easy off a mat. Partly I think my problem is I've hit it off mats so much this winter that I've lost my judgement on where the ball is versus the ground because of the leeway granted. Open to ideas. I also suspect that under pressure I stand a bit closer to it and then get steep and hit down on it and it puts me in a bad place, but I can't seem to get myself to not do that.
