I've been Playing Golf for: 10 years
My current handicap index or average score is: avg score 80-85
My typical ball flight is: straight medium trajectory, to slight fade
The shot I hate or the "miss" I'm trying to reduce/eliminate is: weak short right misses and shanks (a lot of heel contact)

Just some quick background before the videos. I started playing ‘late’ but advanced pretty quickly (shooting occasional upper 70s after about 2-3 years). Once out of college and starting a full time job practice time fell off and so did a lot of the good characteristics of my swing. Just not feeling that compressing strike (mainly on my irons) like I used to so I’m trying to eliminate whatever is causing the loss in compression/distance and a lot of shanks. Here’s a mix of videos from this past weekend. Thanks for any insight!

Welcome to the site. Just two comments…

  1. Mind your camera angles: https://thesandtrap.com/b/playing_tips/filming_your_swing
  2. You lay the shaft down a bit too much, then have to tumble it outward (roll the forearms over the top). Yeah, it lines up at A6, but you're sending the sweetspot (and the hosel) out quickly from there, and swinging left in the process.

Thanks iacas, I appreciate your feedback. I’ll dedinitley try to improve the camera work, this was my first time filming my swing (at least for analysis purposes).

Yeah, I can now definitely see how much I’m laid off at the top- the club is pointing wayyy left of target. Anyone have suggestions on how to work on not being so laid off?

Also, I’ve never noticed until seeing my swing on film but does anyone else see a good amount of lateral swaying of my hips (away from target) on the backswing? I feel like I see most good players actually having their right hip/glute moving back and TOWARDS target, never sliding away.

Anyone else feel free to chime in!

I wouldn't worry too much about that right now.

But when you do:

Thanks for the pointer to that thread! Right now I’ll maybe just try to work on getting less laid off. Could I accomplish this by trying things like:

- Feeling like the club shaft is above my right shoulder at the top of BS?

- Maybe even having the feeling that I’m trying to get ever so slightly across the line at the top, with hopes of in reality being somewhere closer to parallel to my target line?

Those might work. You're more on plane before you lay it down a little. Then it's under. So it may be better to feel as if you steepen it during transition.

Not something most people have to do, that's for sure.

And of course, please post elsewhere on the site.

    • Things didn’t work out with the cutting horse barn my wife was working for there in Virginia. Their Texas facility we were supposed to move down to ended up delayed for at least an extra year after they’d had us leave Virginia to meet them down there “shortly”. So we ended up getting some land by her family in Missouri and building a house of our own down here instead. Not as many courses, but there is one 5 minutes from the house that’s only $62/mo for both of us to be members at and other nicer ones within a reasonable drive as well.    @Rick_D I’ll try to remember to let you know when I’m heading up that direction. It may happen more frequently in the coming year since a dealer for a business I started recently is based out of St Charles so making deliveries myself might be more economical than shipping.
    • I don’t know why my swing got so vertical there. That wasn’t normal.    What did you mean by point 3? I get the hip turn portion.
    • It is. So, just 2 and 3 above now. 😄
    • Hopefully this one is better
    • Patrick Cantlay's strokes gained from 2024: I wonder if he takes more time on approach shots given that was the worst part of his game last season. And then here are his 2023 stats: Much better ball striking season. I wonder if there are any differences in his times between these two seasons. I tend to think he's just slow in general, but it'd be interesting to see his time differences.
