Graphite or Steel shafts for irons??

I am soon going to be looking for new irons and I would like your opinions as to what type of shafts I should look for. I am currently a 21 handicap with a swing speed of 85mph (with steel shafts). I am not concerned with working the ball but instead would just like to get the ball straight, high, and far. I have talked to some people who say that I need steel shafts for a better "feel" and others who say to increase swing speed, I need graphite. Any advice or suggestions? Thanks

Personally I have always used steel shafts but I know people that have used graphite and see the benefits immediately. I would probably suggest steel, simply because you are looking to improve your game (I presume!) and even with a shaft like a Dynamic Gold R300 you would still have the control to keep the ball straight. With the development of technology steel shafts are becoming increasingly easier to hit, probably an important aspect for you would be the actual clubhead that you are looking to get. Get something that is really forgiving for you, don't make the game harder than it already is. Depending on your budget of course, Callaway's are always a good choice - I was off 12 for a while and bought a set of Callaway's X16 Pro Series with R300 shafts and immediately saw a difference and my handicap shot down to 4 within 18 months of using them.

Seek professional advice as well but there are plenty of things out there that will suit your needs and improve your game!

I'm a 25 HCP with no idea what my swing speed is. I've found that I seem to hit more consistently with steel shafts. I don't necessarily need the "feel", I just need the predictable flight. I'm using borrowed clubs right now, but when I go in March to get my own I'll get steel.

Its worth the money to get your swing looked at for 15 mins by a fitter. they will know in 5 minutes what you will need.

I do plan on going to Golfsmith to get fitted. I just wanted to have an idea of what I was talking about and get the opinion of some people who are not trying to sell me anything. Thanks for the advice

I would automatically suggest Steel ober graphite. There is so much variation in flex in Steel alone. Im sure you'll find a great flex, best suited for your swing.

One follow up question. I will likely get a hybrid to replace the long iron(s). I will discuss this with the fitter but do ya'll play steel shafts in your hybrids too? Thanks again for the input, I appreciate it

unless you're old and have joint problems or need some vibration dampening, definitely steel. The ping fitter that drops by my local course every know and then along with my teacher said that. steel will be much more consistent

Because you said you are getting fit and just want info so you know what questions to ask at the fitting... Generally steel gives more control but less distance in irons. Graphite is more forgiving on the body (joints, hands, etc.). With new technology the difference today is minimal compared to the past. Like it or not, most guys think it is not as "cool" to have graphite shafts in irons (just in case this matters to you).
