Hi all!

Just thought I would say hello as new to this!

After 10 years of playing with my Dad's old clubs, I decided to take the plunge and bought some clubs. I havs moved from Graphite to Steel, and bought a set of Taylormade RSI1s.

I'm now trying to fill the bag, and although I know it is personal preference, what is a good balance of clubs?

I have a driver, 4 - PW then a SW and a 58 degree wedge.

What would you add first? I want to spread my spending out, but want to keep a balanced bag.

Thanks,

Oli

Welcome to TST! I would recommend adding a putter. 🙂

Also, you might want to consider a 3 wood. You may want to add either a hybrid or 5 wood depending on your gapping and preference. Also if you have a yardage gap between your SW and PW you can always add a gap wedge (or some call it an approach wedge).

Basically, I would try to get yardages for all your existing clubs and try to fill the gaps where the need is.

Welcome to TheSandTrap!

Even though its not mentioned, I'd assume you have a putter too.

Assuming you have a putter, I'd look at the top end of the bag next, specifically a 3 wood and a hybrid/3 iron depending on your skill/comfort level with each.

Once you get a 3 wood and a hybrid/long iron, then I'd fill the last slot with a gap wedge, since your PW is 44 degrees and the SW is likely 54-56 degrees, something like a 50 degree wedge would be perfect

Edit-  I just echo'ed exactly what @jimnm said, he beat me by a minute.

Thank you both for your very similiar responses, just one slightly quicker on the keyboard!

Ah a putter, that is where I have been going wrong, I thought it was tricky towards the end of a hole.

Should have said that I'm playing off 18. I have never really practiced much before, but am looking at putting some time in during the winter to see how much difference it makes.

Would people suggest a new wood of a less well known brand, or a second hand more recognised brand?

Thanks again!

I'm not familiar with the lesser known brands. But I have purchased used clubs (if you are okay with used) through the globalgolf.com and have been pleased. I would recommend getting fitted, but if you already know your specs you can try global golf. Sometimes they offer like new or open box clubs at a great price. Although you may need to buy a tool (if club is adjustable) and head cover separately. They offer both at reasonable prices too.

I agree with this ^^^

I have purchased through ebay, globalgolf.com, 2ndswing.com, rockbottomgolf.com, callawaypreowned.com, taylormadegolfpreowned.com etc and have had positive experiences through all of the sites.

You could get a high quality used fairway wood like the 2016/2017 Taylormade M2 or the Callaway Epic 3 wood for right around $100

Also consider checking your local craigslist for used clubs

    • Get more comfortable with being uncomfortable. If you don’t like practicing then give up now. You don’t have the passion to become a pro. Unless that mentality changes you won’t do well under stressful situations.    Call the PGA Tour and ask. They probably have resources available.

    • Thanks man, sometimes it’s hard to improve bc when I’m not feeling comfortable I don’t like practicing bc I get frustrated. Any advice?
    • Yeah that’s true, but every time I go see my swing coach he tells me that the wedges aren’t helping me and that I should try another ones.  Yeah I’ve tried that too but still high. It’s a 48 bettinardi that goes 140 max with a draw and my 9 goes 155 stock.
    • I’d say don’t just switch brands look at the specs of your wedge first. A lower bounce or slightly stronger loft on a Betti or Vokey could fix the high launch without changing your feel. Testing a few in a fitting session is the safest way.
