  1. Did anybody else notice in the last Golf Digest the little page about Jack Nicklaus always setting up slightly open? I was told once that I need to make sure the club face looks slightly closed because it's actually square, but that just led to a lot of problems. Now I just set my feet, breath out and swing. Too much worrying about which way the grooves are facing just messes with my head. I play best when I play fast and let my muscles play instead of my mind.
  2. I've flown with a soft case twice. I too was worried about the driver head, especially since it the bag barely zipped over it. Everything turned out fine though. No problems, other than getting weird looks walking around with a huge water buffalo shaped bag over your shoulder.
  3. I started playing seriously when I was around 10 or 11. I'd watched my dad go out every Sunday morning for so long I wanted to see what the big deal was. I never had a junior set, as by that age I was tall enough for my dad's hand-me-downs and garage sale specials. My dad never really pushed me. I pushed him to start teaching me and take me to the course. I played the women's tees until I was probably 13-14, which helped a lot, other than being a little embarrassing. I'm 23 now, and when I have children I'm hoping that I won't have to push them to play golf, I want them to want to go with me to the range etc.
  4. I went through a stage where I wanted new equipment every week because I thought mine was "holding me back." I then got hooked on Srixon products and pretty much sold everything to buy Srixon on eBay. I am please with every decision except for replacing my wedges. I had a 52* Cleveland 900 RTG gap wedge that was laser guided from around 110 yards, and I'm not hitting my new wedges near as well. If I could find the guy I sold it to I'd pay double to get it back, but live and learn. The only reason I would think buying new clubs would be justified, is if your current set isn't set up for your swing speed, height, etc. Usually bending, reshafting, regripping is more expensive than just trading in for a set that has what you need.
  5. I got to watch a lot of the first round during ESPN's rebroadcast last night. As you can tell I'm a big Furyk fan (He grew up around 30 mins from my house.) Other than missing that stupid short putt late he'd be even. He's playing everything well as usual. He'll be top 5 at least. What's with Phil's wrist? When I first saw that brace I thought I was watching bowling.
  6. You probably won't want both wedges to have such a high bounce, as it will limit the number of different shots you can play with them. One high bounce for deep rough and sand (54-56*) and another low bounce for fairway and flop shots out of good lies. I still think you should get a gap wedge (50-52*) with a relatively low bounce (maybe 4*) to take care of the gap between your pitching and sand wedge. I use a gap way more than I ever use a 60* wedge.
  7. You want a heavier bounce for sand shots and a low bounce will tend to dig severely. At an 18 handicap I would recomend getting a gap wedge in the 50-52* with a low bounce to fill in between you PW and sand wedge and a sand wedge in the 56* area with a higher bounce (10-12*). A lob wedge would need very little bounce (like 4*) as it's meant to hit flop shots for short grass. A lob wedge and deep rough do not mix, no matter what height bounce you have.
  8. I thought I had seen this at Dick's a few months ago, and I had. This is the cart version but it gives you an idea as far as price would be. This made me curious and I scoured Google, the international Taylor Made pages and Amazon and couldn't find the Mag line in a stand bag. You have a freak of nature my friend. The best thing would be to contact Taylor Made directly. http://www.dickssportinggoods.com/pr...ductId=2513713
  9. I'm hooked as well. I've been watching since the beginning of the series, and though I can't attest to the medical accuracy of all the cases, I can say the character development is very good, and from a self titled wise-ass's perspective the humor level is awesome. I don't know how I'm going to make it until September now that the season is over. I'll just have to get the first 2 seasons on DVD.
  10. This may or may not be related, but my dad had his knee scoped a few summers ago. The doctor said he'd have to be off it for at least 9 weeks, but he was playing softball again in 3. Not like he was speedy gonzales on the base paths, but he was able to jog if he had to. Obviously it will depend on how invasive the scoping is, but I thought I might give you a slight ray of hope. Good luck with the recovery.
  11. I've been playing for around 15 years now, and usually shoot in the mid to high eighties. It seems that lately I've been pushing and slicing everything. Even before the problem started I'd usually play a small fade with almost every club except my 8-pw. I can handle the slight fade, as I light to soft landings and controlability, but lately it's turned into towering slice. Distance is about the same but the ball starts out at the target and ends up way right. Anything longer than a 6 is losing tons of distance and ending up around 20-30 yards right of where it starts out. I'm used to this sort of thing with my driver now and again, but it's never spread itself to the rest of my bag. I'm even hitting my hybrid right and I usually end up with a draw with that club. I was on a launch monitor recently and everything I was hitting, even some great shots with my 5 iron and driver was with an outside in swing path. I'm trying to figure out how to cope with it. I've tried starting my swing to the outside, but I just end up hitting it of the hozel or chunking the hell out of it. The most frustrating thing is that I've lost confidence in all of my clubs lately. Unless I'm within 120 yards I don't think I can hit the green. What do I need to do? I'd upload a video of my swing.
  12. I use fairwayfiles.com. Haven't heard any other reactions to it but it used the standard USGA scoring system. A freak round of 73 last summer gives me a slightly skewed index though.
  13. Thanks a bunch!
  14. You actually think that a PED would let anyone play that many games in a row? In most cases they have made the players who used them injury prone and shortened careers.
  15. I play mostly public courses on the cheaper end of the spectrum. Most of the time out I'll play "winter rules" by which I mean if it's in the fairway and still resting against a rock or under some dandelions I'll move it a few inches so I can get the fairway lie I earned. Obviously I don't play for money, but if the course was kept in good condition it wouldn't have to be done. I do not move my ball in the rough though, in case you were wondering.
  16. I'm a big guy, and the problem affects me most when it's really humid. I agree totally with the above post. Gold Bond powder is great for prevention, and they also have a cooling product for treatment after the damage has been done. Also, tight fitting shorts will keep the rub from starting. This can be a near debilitating injury though.
  17. I decided to go with oversized grips recently to try and work out some of the woes I've been having with my irons. I went the the GP DD2 grips. Until then I'd been playing with the stock Lamkin Crosslines. I loved the feel of the Lamkins but needed to go up in size, and decided to try the DD2's. I've only hit them on the range, and my glove is wearing out, so I can't give a very good report right now, but they feel good barehanded with a wedge.
  18. Jim Furyk Please Pic 1 Pic 2
  19. only on an "athlete" like Roger Clemens. The man has hit a player in the head intentionally, and then thrown a bat at the same player. (Not that I'm a huge Piazza fan.) The man has no respect for the game and doesn't deserve to receive any.
  20. The best response has been from Hank Aaron himself saying he'll probably be playing golf when the record is broken. If you want to read some funny propaganda go visit Barry Bonds website and read some of the fan mail he gets. It's not only the steroids making that guy's head big. I'm hoping that the hub bub surrounding this will last about as long as McGuire breaking Maris'. Also with the same HOF result as well.
  21. You need to take into consideration that a 60* lob wedge is a hard club to use. You're better off opening the face of your 56* than spending money on a lob. I wouldn't trade my gap wedge (50*-52*) for anything in the world. It's laser guided from around 100 yards. If I need to hit shorter than 70 I open the face of my 55* sand wedge. 60* wedges, especially with the really low bounce may frustrate you buy hitting very fat shots that go around 20 yards. My recomendation is to test the 60* out a lot before committing to buy.
  22. Roger Clemens is just another nail in the coffin of professional sports. Pretty soon Major league teams are going to price themselves out of proffitability. I used to go to several games a year, but now can't afford to. After spending $100+ for 2 tickets then getting reamed for a $7 soda and $8 hot dog? I'll just check out the box score the next morning. My dad has been a Yankees fan his entire life, but even admits that George's practice of trying to buy penants is getting old. What ever happened to a farm system? I've grown up a Braves fan, and if we could win 14 straight divisions with a team made up primarily of our own draft picks why can't other teams? Maybe the Yankees should hire some better scouts. Anyway, Roger Clemens is an ass and I hope he tears a rotator cuff or something. I also wish that major league salaries weren't guaranteed like footballs. I think that would greatly improve the game. The way things are headed in the MLB recently, we're looking at a salary cap in 5 years or so.
  23. The stock shafts are TT dynamic golds. I decided, since we are currently in the process of buying our first house, to hold off on an expensive shaft change or purchase of new clubs. I did, however, change to a midsize grip, which should help a lot with my inconsisten contact due to a very strong and tight grip. I wear a 2xl glove and the midsize was a no brainer. Thanks for all the help though guys.
  24. I ordered these shoes from local retailer, since I can never find shoes in a 14 wide in stock. They are Adidas Climacool Blaze. Around $100 after taxes. I play most of my golf in the afternoon after the course is dried out. They keep my feet fantastically cool, but all the vents let in water, so early morning dew would soak your socks. Good comfortable shoes. Only downside I see to them is that they are molded and you can't replace the spikes.
  25. I'd like to get other people's opinions about private golf and country clubs. Obviously having a private club is a tradition in golf that will never go away, but unless you are financially sound and well connected most of these great courses are beyond the reach of the average golfer. Some may say that this is a good thing, and it keeps riff-raff off the courses, but having caddied at a very exclusive club in TN I can honestly say that most people that play public courses are more conscious of the rules and etiquette of the game than most that play at privates. I'm surrounded by beautiful golf courses, but have access to only 2 or 3, which really ticks me off. I guess I haven't come to grips with the fact that there are great golf courses in this state, country, and world that an average guy like me has 0% chance of ever playing. And that, America, is what really grinds my gears.
