Just google your set name followed by "lofts" and you should find what you need. My Wilson Staffs are severely overlofted with my PW at 42.5 degrees, AW at 46, my GW at 49.5. The club makers do this so that we think that we're hitting newer clubs substantially farther than older ones. My last set had the PW at 47 degrees, so my current set is at least one club stronger, although I hit the newer irons higher as well.

Wilson STAFF vs Wilson STAFF's reputation
NuclearMike replied to Paddymaster's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
I recently picked up two WIlson Staff Fybrid RSs for an unbelievable price. I decided to try the half graphite half steel shaft and unless I hit them absolutely perfectly I may lose 5 yards or so but I hit them high and they land quite soft, and when I hit the higher lofted 3H right I'm 5-10 yards longer than my previous 3+ Nickent 4DX utility. They continue to innovate at Wilson Staff and I'm glad that I got the Fybrids. Still getting used to the shaft but it's going to be a winner for me, I think. -
Titleist AP2 irons plus a Scotty Cameron Newport for less than $400? Run the other way as fast as you can. Remember, if it sounds too good to be true it probably is. Or in this case, definitely is.

I recently had the same issue of standing too far from the ball when hitting irons. I was topping the ball on occasion and thought that it was just me standing up too quickly from the more athletic posture that I've been working on but when I found that even when I absolutely knew that I had stayed down on the ball that the ball position in my stance had to be the culprit. Fixing that problem, or at least fixing it most of the time, has made great differences in my irons. I haven't had the same negative experience with my woods. You're definitely on the right track.

At the risk of alienating myself.......
NuclearMike replied to WhySoSerious's topic in Balls, Carts/Bags, Apparel, Gear, Etc.
Mostly solids for me. I know that the tour guys are endorsing what they wear but since TGC shows the week's work of clothing to be worn during the week of a Major for say, a Nike guy like Rory McIlroy, it looks like they don't even get to dress themselves anymore. Most of today's patterned golf clothing is stuff that I would never buy. Although I'm not his biggest fan the Tiger Woods collection is simple enough to appeal to my sense of style. -
I put the Dri-Tac midsize on all of my clubs (except for the putter) and have a more comfortable soft grip on the club than I did previously using a Lamkin Crossline Oversize. I have arthritis in my hands and always felt that I had to grip the club too hard with the Lamkins. I've lowered my handicap with the Winns and expect to continue to play them..

I'd like to confess my love for...
NuclearMike replied to saturday's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
My Nickent Evolver driver. I bought it after a ten year layoff for $50 and hit the ball farther now, with arthritis, than I ever did consistently at any time in my 50 year golf history. Once I got the right shaft in it (UST Proforce V2 HL) I'm in the fairway 70+ % of the time and have gotten a few out there 270, which was never the case before. -
Shot a 94- 50 and 44. Started out without range balls because the range was closed when we teed off. I just got a couple of new hybrids and so took out my over-lofted 5 iron but still my iron play sucked. I'm driving the ball great (last week 12/14, this week 10/14 fairways) and have hit some of my longest drives ever over the last two rounds but when I get over an iron shot I'm just not sure where it's going to go and what flightpath it will take to get there. Made a couple of nice up and downs and a few good putts but my GIRs are really low because of the irons (0/4 on par 3s, 1/4 on par 5s, 2/10 on par 4s) so I'm having to depend too much on my wedges, which are suspect in their own right. Bogeys and doubles with one triple were the order of the day. I seem to have no trouble hitting my woods and hybrids but keep lifting up on my irons causing me to top the ball or hit it off of the toe. Iron practice at the range on Friday. Hope I can straighten this out.

Since my ball of choice isn't overly expensive (Top Flite Gamer V2 2010 model) I use a new ball to start every round. Yesterday I opened a new sleeve and when I lost two of them by the 9th hole I used an older one still in good condition. It stayed with me through 18. I'll keep good condition balls in the bag until I scuff one or I just feel like changing up.

How important is warming up before a round?
NuclearMike replied to Slice of Life's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
I had the first tee time yesterday (7am) and when I asked for range balls at 6:30 was told that the range opens at the same time as the course. I was able to get loose with the help of my Torc Swingtrainer but it wasn't the same as hitting 20 or more balls to get ready. I didn't feel comfortable with my driver swing until four or five holes in but scored OK because of a couple of nice greenside wedges that I was able to put close enough to make the putt, one for par and one for bogey. Of course, the way my swing seems to change day-to-day I didn't feel right hitting my irons most of the day and my accuracy showed it. That was partially due to the lack of warmup time and partially due to a swing fault that I still have to identify.. -
Why do we lose our swings?
NuclearMike replied to SoundandFury's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
I took time away from golf and come back with a totally different swing that I'm still trying to learn. When I'm off of my game, which is more often now than 12 years ago, a shorter, slower backswing can make all of the difference in my comfort level. Where I get my swing screwed up is when I take the club back too far and then try to reroute the club for the downswing. I now try to take the club back until my left shoulder touches my chin and no farther. -
I have the V2 in my irons, driver, and 5 hybrid. No problems so far, and the best choice that I've ever made in a shaft. Since i imagine that QC is good at the factory something must have happened during installation.

Low Testosterone Treatment- Success or Failure?
NuclearMike replied to NuclearMike's topic in Fitness and Exercise
For anyone on the fence about testosterone replacement therapy let me tell you it has apparently done wonders for my golf game! I was always tired and had lost a lot of distance (from an average 230-240 yard drive with roll down in 2011 to about 210-220 in early 2012, with that seemingly getting lower as 2012 progressed). I started HRT two months ago and want to report that I played yesterday for the first time since therapy began. I'd been to the range a lot, but not to the course. I teed off at about 6:30 yesterday morning with some dew on the ground. Bottom line is that I had the best day driving the ball that I've ever had. I put two out there a little over 270 and two others over 255, while hitting 12 of 14 fairways. These are total distances, not carry, but a couple of those were likely as long as anything I've ever hit. I had more distance with my irons as well but have to work on accuracy. It doesn't matter how far I hit it if I keep missing greens. FYI, I'm 57 years old, 5'6", 180#, and have a pretty bad case of psoriatic arthritis. I wear ankle braces and use midsize grips because I can't hold a standard grip very well, so I never thought that I'd hit the ball like that. I'm stronger, losing weight, and even feel as if the arthritis has stabilized. I highly recommend testosterone therapy for those who need it. -
I was citing a 10 yard loss from 230-240 in the fairway over one season on the above post. Well, I started treatment for low testosterone two months ago and for the first time since treatment began I played 18 yesterday, in the same conditions that I usually play in. I put two out past 270 and three others past 255 off of the tee (these are total, not carry distances). That may not seem like much to you long knockers but it was the best overall driving day that I've ever had. I hit 12 of 14 fairways but was a little wild with my irons. I had longer than expected distance with them as well but need to work on better control. Doesn't matter how far I hit them if they don't hit the green. Testosterone replacement therapy seems to really work for me.

If I never hit a tree I'd hit every fairway. If I hit every fairway I'd hit every green. If I hit every green I'd one putt at least half of the time. If it wasn't for the edge of the cup I'd never miss anything. If, if, if.... Just hit the damn ball, count every stroke, and quit whining. They call it "the rub of the green".

Terrible golfer, but loving the game, do I bother you good golfers?
NuclearMike replied to Scooter212's topic in Golf Talk
Of course you wouldn't bother me. Like a lot of us we have or do play with people of all levels of talent and capability. The best golfer I know is also one of the slowest, with his plumb bobbing, looking at the putt from every angle, taking multiple practice swings, basically all of the things that can make anyone a slow player. Playing ready golf and not worrying about protocol, simply playing when you're ready to play, will make you a great addition to any foursome. -
soft stepping and hard stepping is?
NuclearMike replied to ihategettingold's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
Thank you for that. -
Bubba is a whining baby. His actions of blaming someone else for his errors are those of an egotistical a-hole who thinks that he's better than everyone else. Wait, it must be God that made the balls go in the water! And made him hit it over the 18th green! Of course, we'd only hear about God if he won. I know, here we go again...

Bought two WIlson Staff Fybrid RS hybrids with the half-and-half shaft yesterday for $29.99 each on a one day sale. Today they're $69.99 each. Sign up for their e-mails and check the site often. They're a great company to deal with.

Got mine today. They're both great. Thanks, Mike. The fitted one is the perfect size.

There isn't much by the Galleria unless you go to the local courses like Wildcat. Probably the closest range to you is the Marti Golf Center in West Houston. I live in Sugar Land and go to the Stafford Golf Center on US Hwy. 90. All grass, no mats, no real putting green, a decent green for pitching for up to 60 yards or so, and a buy 10 buckets get 5 free program, so it's 15 100 ball buckets for $80. If you like to practice like I do it's a pretty good deal. Good people and a decent, although anything but high-end, place to hit. PM me if you want for more details.

I took nearly ten years off as well. The strange thing was that my standard ball flight was a fade when I stopped and a draw when I returned. I couldn't hit a draw to save my life from the '60s to the '90s! Good luck, and welcome back to golf!

It happened to me yesterday. I've been working on a lower ball flight and had spent two hours hitting 80 balls in 95 degree weather. The last 15 or so I was completely exhausted so I took the last 25 in the bucket and went to the pitching range, which is about 55 yards back to front with two holes to shoot towards. After a few slow swings with the 56 degree I decided to hit a few different ball flights with the 49.5. It helped me to cool down and get back the good swing thoughts that I had had early in the original time at the range. I actually made two consecutive pitches from 50 out with exactly the ball flight that I'd been working on. Time to get to the course on Tuesday (my next day off) to see what if I can put into play what I learned at the range.
