  1. Ah ok this is all good news then, I was searching the PGA site trying to figure how they calculated putts but I couldnt find anything. I had a feeling it only counted when you were on green but I counted ones off anyways. Now I dont feel so bad about those 36-37 putt rounds when I was putting from off the fringe
  2. I've been keeping track of my puts lately and have managed to average about 33-34 putt every round. I know the pro's some times get anywhere from 25-29 putts a round and when im draining a lot of par saves and a few birdies my numbers still seem pretty high. Now the thing is I miss almost half the greens in regulation when I play but when I miss a lot of the time Im just barely on the fringe. I will putt these and count these shots in my total even though Im putting from off the green. Now my question is how do you/the pga tour count their putts? 1. Every time you stroke your putter even off the green or 2. Every time you stroke your putter on the green
  3. Just curious what some of the lowest rounds you guys have had are. Post what your handicap was at the time and a brief description of the round. My lowest to date was a 76, I shot it at Scyamore Golf Course in Arvin, CA. I shot it some time in the summer of 2000 when I was 14 years old, I had a friend I played with every sunday at this golf course and he was always 5-10 strokes better then me but this day I creamed him and shot 76 and he shot 79. I shot an even par 36 on the front nine and followed it up with a 40. I was an 8/9 handicap then - maybe lower I cant remember. Since playing golf again after a 6 year break my lowest round thus far (after 2.5 weeks) is a 78 at my home course Tomball Country Club. I shot a pair of 39's and fortunately had no double bogeys which really helped break 80 again. Right now I am currently a 10 handicap. what are some of your lowest rounds?
  4. I dont remember where I read this could've been on this site, but a good way to stop gripping the club really hard when your nervous or what ever is to right before you swing squeeze the club as hard as you can while gripping the club, I know it works for normal swings and should work for putting too.
  5. Ever since all these steriods scandals started popping up I always knew golf was a pure sport and none of the best players in the world have ever touched or even thought about touching the stuff. But it doesn't stop me thinking that there are some rookies or idiots that will make it on the tour and are stupid enough to to try this stuff. I cant help to think 5 years down the line when they do start testing this stuff that a few idiots that really arnt that good will get caught and send the media into a frenzy trying to put blemishes on this otherwise blemish free sport. Anyone else think this is gonna happen?
  6. Haha Tiger will trounce Rory just like he did to him last week, just like he did to Ames beating him 9&8 at the match play tournament. Imo tour players should keep quite about Tiger's "beatableness" untill they actually beat him, then they can talk all they want. Sure the media wants someone to challenege Tiger, but that person needs to do it on the course not in the press room running his mouth.
  7. The US team looks pretty weak this year, will be interesting to see how it turns out. Tiger's record in these type of tournaments is very poor - not to say he doesnt try but I think people just really want to beat him since they can't do it in normal tournaments its probably easier to beat him here. Jim Furyk didnt do so well in the PGA but hes usually pretty solid, Phil has been horrible since his wrist injury - he shouldnt even play. Zach Johnson has been playing great this year he should do fine, David Toms is a good player but his record in these things is terrible. I like Scott Verplank and Cink they are pretty solid. As for Austin/Glove/Mahan they have never played in these things so we will see how they do.
  8. Yesterday was my 12th full round of golf since returning to golf from a 6 year break. (Im 21 years old and quit golf when I was 15) I have been playing pretty much every day for the last two weeks and I have averaged an 85, only 2-3 rounds at 90 or above with lots in the low 80's. This was pretty close to my average scores when I played 6 years ago at the age of 14-15. Two rounds ago I shot 85 having doubles and a tripple bogey on the back nine ending my rounds. The day before I shot 82 having double bogeyed the last two holes otherwise would have broke 80 for the first time since coming back. Today I felt like it was my day, I played in 100+degree heat again. So it was going to be another round of sweat drenched clothes, I came equiped as usual with 2-3 bottles of water and my favorite lemon gatorade. I started off on the Front 9 as usual at my club which is a par 35 and I think about 10 strokes easier then the back nine for some reason. I started off with a bogey at the first hole which I always do, a routine par at the 2nd which is a easy par 3, then the 3rd hole hit. Our 3rd hole is a 350 yard easy dog leg left with OB (houses) on the left, so if you pull it 15-20 yards offline you are gonna hit a house. I played it smart, easy 3 iron middle of fairway 100 yards out then a nice sandwedge to about 25 feet away from the pin - then a 3 putt. So im +2 after 3 holes, not a good way to start my round, another par at the 4th which is really easy then I got to the 5th a 550 yard par 5 with water in the front, impossible to go for in two. I duffed my 2nd lay up shot and it went baout 100 yards up the fairway leaving me a 175 yard 6 Iron - I wanted to hit a 5-Iron but I broke it at the driving range a year ago and havent fixed it yet. My shot was hit as hard as I could hit my 6 iron and ended up 10 feet short of the green, which is only 5 feet past the water - lucky me. I chipped my shot at the 5th about 4 feet from the pin, then missed the putt and ended up with a bogey. Next hole is a 150 yard par 3, I missed the green 10 feet right and chipped up and two putted another bogey - im now +4 after 6 holes not the best of starts. Next hole is a 470 dogleg right Par 5 with tree's that you can carry your teeshot over to give you an long-short iron approach, I tried to go over the trees but hit a bad hook and ended up behind some other trees had to punch out got up and down for a par. This next hole is one of the hardest on the course - 8th is a Par 4 dog leg left about 375 yards with water/trees everywhere. You basically have to play an iron off the tee, mine today was a 3-iron but I ended up pushing it far right away from the hole leaving me about 200 yards to the green and underneath a tree. I hit a fantastic low 3 iron that flew under the trees landed short of the green but kept rolling till it went off the back of the green - very unlucky leaving me an impossible down hill chip. I bladed my 3rd shot and it quickly scooted off the green 15 yards off. I remember thinking I could really use some luck right now and a chip in - the golf gods answered I hit a perfect chip to the uphill hole and rolled right in the cup for one of the luckiest Pars in the world - I almost felt like Tiger at the PGA this weekend. Our 9th is a Par 3 and I've made par on it every time ive played it - and I did again. I finished the front nine +4 which is a 39 sending me into the back nine which has been my bane, and I've averaged about 45/46 on it. So I start the back 9 - feeling a little better since the 8th hole and my luck felt like it was changing and I shot 39 which is always a good feeling, I pared 10th, then 3 putted for bogey on 11 from just off the front of the green, then 12th was another bad one. 12th is a 150 yard par 3, I pulled my 8 iron 15 yards left of the hole, chipped over the green by about 5 yards, duffed my next chip leaving me about a 20 foot put which I luckily made for a 4 trying to keep my card clean of double bogeys. Next hole I two putted from 10 feet on a par save attempt, now im +7 after 13 (this is a par 71 course). So the 14th hole is really annoying for me, its a 120 yard Par 3 and I cant seem to find the right club for it, my pitching wedge would always sail over the green by 10 yards even when I try to hit it easy, so I put a new sandwedge in my bag and its been helping especially on today, I landed it just off the green and two putted for par. Next hole I got a routine Par, Fairway->green->two putt, im now +7 with only 3 holes to play I think I can do it now. This next hole has been one of my favorites its a Par 5 that curves to the left its only about 470 yards but is completely gaurded by trees all down the left and to the right of the green is water. Lucky for me I can hit a draw and have been hitting my 3 wood all the way down the fairway to about 150-160 yards out - I decided to play it safe and hit 3 Iron but hit it straight with no draw and ended up in the right rough just off the fairway. I layed up with a 7iron and had about a 30 yard pitch and had it roll 15 feet past the pin for a makeable birdie. I made the put and now im only +6 with two holes to play - the same two holes I double bogeyed the day before. On the 17th I hit a 3Iron again and sliced it so bad it went in the other fairway but had a shot at the green over the trees. I hit to about 10 feet short of the green - duffed my chip to 25 feet short of the pin and two putted for bogey - im now only +7 - one hole to go I can finally break 80 again - I hope. The last hole is deceptively hard - its only about 520 yards for a par 5 but the green is gaurded in the front by water so you'll need a perfect drive to even think about going for it in two, the tee shot is even more hard as there are two giant oak trees gaurding the fairway about 185 yards from the tee on both the left and right giving you only about 15 yards to hit your drive through - and you cant get over them with a 3 wood. So I elected to hit a 3 wood because I wasnt going to risk going for it in two, but I pushed it badly to the right and almost lost my ball in the rough after looking for it for 5 mins but finally found it before I was gonna go back to the tee and take my penalty. I was in a bunch of trees so I punched out with a 7 iron to about 160 yards - I got a little worried the pin was in a tough posistion today after carrying water you have to get over a bunker that gaurds the right side of the green where the pin was - I wanted to play smart and went for the middle of the green - I hit a perfect shot pin high and had a 15 foot putt for birdie - I missed but was still happy cause i shot 78!! I shot 78 which is only two worse then my all time best of 76 when I was 14. Looking back at it besides the last 5 holes where I played even par when I usually go +5 or 6 the round wasnt that spectacular - had I not 3 putted or duffed some chips I would've shot around 74/75. I felt like I played exactly the same as when I shoot 82-85 except I didnt make any really bad mistakes (aka doubles or tripple bogeys). Hopefully I can keep breaking 80 as it is a huge boost to my confidence breaking 80 again after only 2.5 weeks.
  9. I know im watching it at work at my lunch break right now :D its awesome, I think this is the same site they had for the British open a few weeks back because I was watching that as well.
  10. Mine happened over an entire round not just one duffed shot or a shanked shot. When I was a freshman on my highschool team my coach loved me becaues I was the #2 player on the team and all the other freshmen shot around 120 for 18 holes while I shot anywhere from 78-85 - and I played well in the first few high school matches that we had. Well one weekend he asked me to go play golf with him and his brother at a local course I had played all the time and was fairly easy compared to the others in my area. Both him and his brother were extremely good at golf, pretty much scratch golfers and both of them played for UCLA. On the whole car way over he was bragging to his brother about me how good I was playing and how good I would be and all that and I just sat in the back of his truck with a big smile on my face anticipating a great round. Once we finally got to the course I tee'd off and hit a terrible drive, I dont remember what I did but I remember It started off extremely bad. I ended up taking a 8 or a 9, while my coach looked at me like some thing possesed my me because hed never seen me do that. Unfortunately there was no come back story here and the rest of the round followed suite, It was so traumatizing to me I cant even remember what happened after the first hole because I was so embarassed I ended up shooting a score in the high 90's like a 98 or something really close to 100, something I hadn't done in years - and spent the whole way back quiet in his truck.
  11. I'd have to disagree with you on the topic of competetion, sure you have to play with other people but do you really have to pay attention to them other then not stepping in their lines or walking in front of them or the small talk to be friendly? No. I've played about 99% of my golf career with other people so far, just recently did I start playing alone. To me It was extremely rewarding because I felt like I was in my own little world - all I thought about was getting my ball in the whole from start to finish and visualising it with 0 distractions. If you go about it with the right angle and just practice keeping your thought simple and pure, and try to apply the same thinking to when you play with other people it can be very helpful I believe. Look at Tiger when you see him on TV, sure hes always playing with people but when you look on his face from hole #1 to hole #18 hes in his own little world, you never see him react to anything or what people around him are doing so technically he always playimg alone. To sum it up golf is you versus the course, anything else is a distraction if you let it bet - some people are better at blocking out things then others. Examples would be two friends playing with each other who are relatively close in score, one friend plays the course while the other is concentraded on only beating his friend the whole time. In my experience I just started playing with my little brother who took up the game (I only play alone the days hes too tired to play) - I enjoy playing with him and having company but some times It can be extremely frustrating spending 5-10 mins looking for every ball he hits in the rough before even getting to my 2nd shot.
  12. my GPA has been steadily going up over the years, my first year of college I did ok, but my most recent one I got a 3.0, this next semister im shooting for 3.5 maybe even 4.0
  13. 1. Pretty much everything you mentioned 2. Doesn't really matter, any competetion is better then none 3. Im not the best student but im not the worst, I have about a 2.9 GPA in CC, I do not know what my high school GPA was. 4. No i am impartial to Texas seeing as I wasnt born here and lived in California for 15 years.
  14. Hi im a 21 year old Community College Student (yes i know im slow, but at least im going to school) I recently just got back into golf after a 6 year hiatus and was seeking some advice. Backstory: I started playing golf when I was about 10 when my dad asked me to caddy for him in his weekly saturday skins game with his buddies. Once I started shooting decent enough, which didnt take long, he let me play with them. From the ages of 11-15 I played in all the local junior tournaments, although I never won any of them I placed in the Top3/Top5 every once in awhile getting a medal. Once I entered highschool I joined the team, I ended up earning the #2 spot on our Varsity team as a freshman in a team full of Juniors/Seniors, at this time I could consistently shoot any where from 78-86 on most days 87-92 on rare bad ones. Then disaster struck... Halfway through the school year my dad was transfered to Texas, after not playing for 2-3 months becaues of the transistion I finally tried out for the team in Texas but shot a horrible 55 on 9holes in terrible playing conditions while everyone on their team did bad too. I didnt make the team and lost all interest in playing - Not to mention my dad didnt play anymore on saturdays (and has only played 2-3 rounds since we moved) and the cost of playing out here was tripple of that in city in California - all this combined ended my golf career. Here I am 6 years later a 21 year old, with my own money and about 2 weeks ago I had this immense desire to play golf again, after searching the internet for hours I found a course that was EXTEREMLY cheap to play on, I signed up and since then have spent about 75% of my free time out there Playing or Practicing(a few times the owner has had to make me go home because I was chipping/putting till it got dark and they had to lock the gate) I've been playing about 7-8 rounds a week so far, after the intial few of learning how to putt/chip again I got my scores back into the low 80's after one week. My last 3 rounds were 80, 82, 83 (even had about 3-4 double bogeys in each of them - once i get rid of those stupid mistakes I can break 80 again) My goals are: 1 week: Break 80 a few times. 1 month: Consistently shoot 80 or lower 2-3 months: Shoot in low 70's Given my current scores, practicing and playing schedule I think these goals are extremely realistic, other then that I want to start competing in the club tournaments here soon and my ultimate plans would be to try and play in some USGA amateur events next year(If im close to a scratch golfer by then) I was just wondering If anyone had any advice for me in my current situation, if there was a way I could find a college I could transfer to and possibly try out for the team - or any other helpful information for someone in my situation. I know most colleges look for premier high school students and ones that played in all the local junior tournaments and won - things I didnt do - even though I think I can be just as good some day soon.
  15. Tiger. Just like his father said, no matter what he does on and off the course no one will do as much as he has or will once hes retired from golf - in the form of charitys and being a general ambassador to this great sport and many other things he has up his sleeves. Tiger Woods - US President 2034 !
  16. www.tomballcountryclub.org it says country club but its open for everyone and extremely cheap, ($160/month for the whole family play when and how ever much you want) Ive been a member for about a week now and have played 10+ rounds of golf so thats $16 a round so far hahaha
  17. I am an intern for plains all american pipeline very boring - want to be playing golf
  18. I was actually in the same boat as a lot of the replies on this thread, I always wanted to play golf by myself but always seemed scared for some reason because every other time in my life I had played with people so playing alone seemed so weird just to think about. Finally I just got fed up with not playing so I went out and played by myself - and loved it, of course I had my ipod with me so it was even nicer just me and the course. On a side note though I play at a country club thats fairly small, ($160/month play as much as you want) its extremely cheap and a very small club seeing as on a maximum day there might be 50-60 people out there and on a weekday thers some times only 20 people on the course. So when I do play by myself I can usually cruise through 75% of the course with out running in to anyone. If you plan to do it I suggest you dont on the weekend, since most people play on saturday/sunday unless you know your course usually doesnt have a lot of play. Feels kinda akward when a group of 3-4 people are waiting for you on a teebox while you look for your ball in the rough of what/not. Also join up with people if they ask you, or ask them unless you hate the small talk you usually have to do with people to be friendly.
