Robbers, limo drivers, and and hitmen are the only professions that come to mind that rock black gloves. I don't think any golfer is trying to emulate the look of either of those 3, so I'll assume that's where the dislike comes from. Hell, even construction workers and ditch diggers wear some brown or orange gloves.

If walking is so integral to the game, we should stop carting players back to the 18th for playoff holes, I guess. Make them walk from the 18th green to whichever designated tee, and tell them to suck it up. Forget the T.V. times that the networks have allotted; running an hour passed the scheduled end-time will show that golfers really are world class athletes once and for all. The majority here agree, his disability doesn't prevent him from hitting the ball - only getting to it. He got good enough at the sport to compete at the highest level despite his "shitty deck" he was dealt, and now all he needs is a mode to navigate the course. His ball will navigate the course the same way as everyone else, and he will compete to get that ball into the cup in the fewest amount of strokes, the same way as everyone else.

Like I already said, him hobbling to and from the cart isn't easy for him. It's strenuous and tiring, just the same as the guys walking 18. [quote name="Phil McGleno" url="/t/58810/casey-martin-cart-or-not/36#post_722479"]Like hell it's not an advantage. Its obviously an undeniable advantage for him personally since without it he wouldn't even be able to play golf. And if you dont think that riding a cart around instead of having to walk 18 (72) holes is an advantage over other guys then you havent played tournament golf or certainly haven't done it in the heat. Look at the boys in Memphis or wherever they are this week sweating their balls off. Look at Jason Dufner being tired after his stretch and not being able to close out Johnson. I get that hes a nice guy but this is a competition and now its unfair as one guy gets to do something nobody else does because LIFE isnt fair and gave him those legs but sports are supposed to be as fair as possible, and we dont let shorter people tee off from closer to the hole because they're shorter. Just re-routed this from another thread.

I like Duff's swing a lot too. It's robotic, yet fluid. Routine, yet unique. Smooth, yet fast. He really hits the ball well, something that's really desirable for any golfer of any level.

My view is this (hard to be unbiased because I am a lifelong Duck fan.) : His disability doesn't prevent him from playing the game - meaning hitting the golf ball - just navigating the course. I think that if he's willing to hobble to each shot from a cart and hit shots, then more power to him. The cart isn't giving him an advantage; just allowing him to get to his ball, seeing as he can hardly walk. In the local paper he said, by the last holes of his qualifier, he was extremely tired. I'd imagine he gets more fatigued hobbling from the cart than an able bodied person does walking the course. Either way, I'm rooting for him, and it's a fun and interesting story, as well. I just think the reason him being allowed to use a cart is perfectly okay is because he would undoubtedly walk all 18 holes - if he could.

Very real, and I get them at the range every now and then. Doesn't usually last *too* long for me, but it's frustrating beyond comprehension. I've never experienced a case of the shanks on the course, except for my first time maybe. They really are an odd hitch in your giddyup, and can pop up out of seemingly no where. I've been feeling real well with my swing only to shank the next 10. Best thing to do, from my experience, step away from the ball, take a few practice swings and focus on your path and your low point on the turf, then take the next few shots slow and low. But even then, your mind is going to start playing tricks on you, and anything will be more difficult than usual.

Brandon is such a little bitch about this subject. Quit your crying, man. It's a television show with female golfers playing not-so-great golf. Their looks will come up for discussion regardless of the quality of golf shots, let alone when it's been as uninspiring as this season has been, and there is a vocal group that thought Zakira's look was obscure, trashy, and not the least bit flattering. Quit accusing everyone of giving "ignorant" and 'straw-man" arguments as if you're some God given beacon of morality to these heathen internet forums. Now, aside from someone's constant crying, the last episode was a little bit more exciting, and I'm really starting to like a few of the girls. Looks, attitude or golf game.

Dang, thanks for the history lesson, Buckeye! I'm a history major, so this stuff intrigues me. I knew JFK was an athlete and played some golf, but I didn't know he was that good. For anyone to be near scratch back in the day with the old equipment meant they had to be pretty talented.

Who was the best president of all time? Gotta be Clinton or Ike? I've heard Obama's not any good, and I've never really heard whether any of the Bush's could play or not.
-
No, I mentioned Rickie's 84 in my original post. Because Dan Patrick said he could shoot an 84, which got me wondering what other famous people golf and what kind of scores they put up.
-
Yeah I knew there were quite a few pro athletes that were damn near scratch golfers. Seems like it would be relatively easy for them compared to someone else with a full-time job. What about politicians and actors? I heard Boehner is a pretty low-capper.

Shot a 50/40 for a 90 on Sunday. Obviously my problems were on the front 9 (I'm going to blame it on a 7am tee time not of my choosing haha) but I figured it out on the back and had only 4 bogeys. The worst part about all of this: my goal was to BREAK 90 for the first time since I don't get to play rounds of 18 all that often (budget, playing partners etc.) and I left my birdie putt on 18 short by no more than 4 inches. That would have given me 89, and I would have been very happy. At least my 40 lets me know that I'm more than capable of shooting in the 80's. Just have to get out and play as much as possible. I did set a secondary goal of parring the last 3 holes straight, and I managed to pull it off, so that helped ease the pain a little.

Feherty has shed some light on famous golf enthusiasts, but who are some others? I know Dan Patrick said he could have put up the same score that Rickie put up on Sunday (obviously somewhat joking but also possible maybe?) What kind of indexes, if any, do they carry? I'd say Chuck Barkley is probably the most (im)famous golfer.

Had a funny story I thought I'd share. The course right by my work offers a sprinkler special - all the holes you can play after 6 for 13 bucks - and I've been neglecting to do it as often as possible so I made sure to go out and play a few yesterday evening. The last time I did it I played 13 before dark, and that was early May. Now that it stays light until well after 9:00, I thought I could damn near get 18 in. As my luck would have it, I got stuck behind a guy and his wife who looked fairly new to the game (although not too bad for a beginner couple). But while they may have been better than most hackers at navigating the course, they had obviously never heard of pace of play or course etiquette. They played very slow, and never paused on a tee box long enough to let me play thru, or for me to even ask for that matter. Finally, after the 8th hole, I was able to skip the 9th and go jump around on the back 9. By this point I'm pretty antzy after waiting on tee boxes and in fairways so I'm just trying to move from hole to hole as fast as possible and get in as much golf I can with the remaining sunlight. I was damn near jogging between holes! I lost a few tee shots - which I didn't have a problem with since I was aiming for quantity. My second tee shots were always doozies haha Anyway, it was fun and I felt like a dork racing between holes, but I didn't care. I braved a hot humid rain halfway thru too, which is typical for Oregon this time of year.

I think that whole thing was all "made for t.v." whether by the director/producer, or Gloriana herself just trying to make an impact that show. Or she's just not the brightest...
-
And neither are you, dude. Hardly a strawman, either, just asking you a question.
-
I appreciate the humor, the rest of these folk are taking this way too seriously.

Zach Johnson is by far and away my least favorite golfer, and his swing makes me want to throw up, about as much as Gainey's does. So much upper body jerk.
-
Why are you so emotionally invested in this girl? Her short shorts and jump suit get-ups were gross and unflattering. What's it to you? It's a T.V. show, and this season is obviously more about the females and less about the golf, so why does negative talk about her bother you so much?
-
Thanks, I've been working on my course management a lot, I'll keep at it.

I have a question about this. I practice pretty regularly, but my budget is tight. I'm a student and I work anywhere from 15-20 hours a week (just got a second job, so my tee-off's should increase). I only play 18 holes of golf 1 time a week max, most of the time less. When the weather is good, I'll play a few 9 hole rounds a week if things go as planned. I break 100 every time, but can't break 90. Does that make me a weekend golfer, or are my scores just that pathetic? Luckily, I have somewhat of a Scottish mindset, just like to play, hit good shots that get up in the air and close to my target, and have a good time with friends, or by myself, in the great outdoors. I would really like to start shooting 80's tho. I practice year round, hopefully that's on the horizon.

Like I said in my previous post, my first sport that I was passionate about was motocross, and this could not be more true. Once upon a time motocross was a core sport that was (relatively) inexpensive. Now that the promoters are trying to branch out to every dorky kid who got cut from their schools football or baseball team, the tracks and races are littered with the worst groups of people imaginable. Energy drink advertisements everywhere, and more "extreme" stuff than anyone could handle. It's a joke now, like Monster Trucks, and I wish it would go back to the more low key sport it used to be. I can't vouch for what golf used to be like, but less expensive and less crowded sounds superb to me.
