impatient waiting for others at golf course
Tuflehundon replied to golf55's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
I don't worry to much about how long the round takes. Sometimes there are new people ahead of me that take forever. I just let them play there game and have fun with it. Everyone has to learn somehow. -
I played with a guy a month ago that just had a really big belly. He used a regular length putter (35") as a belly putter. I don't see an issue with this since you still have to make the put.

This has helped me a ton on the course. I used to just bang away, but I wasn't practicing the way I played. Now I step away between each shot, pick a target each time and aim for that target. I also broke my right foot a few years back, that's why I stopped playing golf for a couple of years. If I just go and bang away at them now, my foot will cramp up and I'll have to step away and walk it off. By stepping away each shot, it keeps that from happening. A small bucket of balls can last me 2 or 3 hours. (or more if I have the time) Usually start out at the chipping range, chip the whole bucket twice, but at varying ranges. Then I will go to the putting range and hit the bucket once there. Then finally I will go to the range and hit there. I work through SW, 9I, 6I, 7W, 3W, then driver. Tend to work more on my wedges and irons at the driving range. My driver and woods are pretty good right now. If I have a few left over at the end, or if someone gives me a few more cause they have to leave, I'll work on my partial wedge shots.

Good on you for sticking with her through this. My Wife has Lymphoma. She has 2 chemos left then 1 1/2 months of radiation. She is in remission now though. Back on subject. I lift 5 days a week for strength, and do cardio each morning. I am not in perfect shape, but I'm getting there. Down about 100lbs since last year. PLan to loose another 100.

OK, so it varies then. That would make sense. Guess I'll have to start adding weight at around 20g and then just experiment from there. Not sure what length I will end up with, but the 43" one I tried at Golfsmith was way to long. Hit my sternum more than my belly. I'm 6' tall, but have fairly short legs for my height. My Mother is 5'2" and we have the same inseam. Thanks for the answer BTW.

I have been considering trying out a belly putter. Used one at Golfsmith the other day waiting for the Wife to finish shopping and liked it. The one I tried was an Odyssey Sabertooth. But the shaft was to long for me, it was a 43" and that hit me more in the sternum than the belly. I want to give it a try, but don't want to spend the big bucks till I know if I like it or not. That brought me to do some research here and on the Internet. I found the belly putt device here: http://www.golfballs.com/static/Belly-Putt.html It allows me to use my current putter, which is an Odyssey 3ball SRT, and I can adjust the length until I get it were I like it. I like the adjustability of it, and the fact that I can take it off and put a plug into the grip if I decide I don't like it. If I decide that I do like it, I will more than likely get the Odyssey 2 ball or Sabertooth belly putters. While doing my research, I found that the belly putter heads weigh more than a regular putter head. Just holding the sabertooth belly putter and regular sabertooth putter I could feel a slight difference. Does anyone know roughly how much more the belly putter heads weigh?. Luckily there are cutouts in the 3balls head, so I can install the weight, and it'll never be seen.

I guess I am fairly lucky for a couple of reasons. Pretty much every course near me has a putting green, and a chipping green. The course I normally practice at has a gold school for kids, so the practice area is really nice. The is a putting green, chipping green, and even a longer range chipping green (out to 50yrds). And there are tons of driving range lanes. I just had to learn when not to go there. When the school is there, the chipping and putting greens are packed. The other advantage I have is working from home. So I can go whenever I want to, as long as I get my work done. So I can schedule my practice sessions around times that they aren't busy.

Forget the driver, I'm using my 3W off the tee!
Tuflehundon replied to formula428's topic in Golf Talk
When I started playing I didn't hit my driver well consistantly. When I was on, it was really on. But when it was off, it was really off, like out of bounds off. I abandoned my driver for several months. Then I realized I was ignoring the problem, instead of trying to fix it. That's when I took my 1st lessons. Turned out for me, it was mostly my grip that caused the problem. Took me a while to fix my swing, and get into the groove again, but in the long run I think it was worth it. Now my driver is one of my best shots. -
Wedges: Why do so many bag a 52*, 56*, 60*?
Tuflehundon replied to BrokeLoser's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
I carry PW 45*, AW 50*, SW 55*, and LW 60* -
One thing my Instructor told me that has helped me as well. When you are on the driving range. Hit a ball and then take a step beck. Aim every shot at something, like you are on the course. This has helped me get into a routine for each shot on the course, and my shots are more consistent now. As far as what you should be working on with the percentages, that's a perfect question for your Instructor, since you have one.

Do You Tee Off While the Group Ahead of You Is Putting Out?
Tuflehundon replied to DirtCheap's topic in Golf Talk
As long as they are out of your range, I say go for it. I've never had anyone say anything about it. But if you can hit 270, make sure they are at least 40 past that. -
Which is better... An all inclusive resort? or a Carribean Cruise?
Tuflehundon replied to DirtCheap's topic in The Grill Room
I say resort. My Wife loves cruises, but I don't like them as much. You have tons of stuff to do on ship, but are stuck on the ship. You'll hit a port or 2, but will only be at that port for a few hours. Not much tie to do anything more than a small excursion or some shopping. But if you go to a resort, you can leave that resort if you want and explore. Do things on your schedule, not the ships schedule. -
That's awesome that you didn't let a bad hole get to you. I have seen so many guys games go down hill after one bad hole.

Any of you ever had a chance to play a Pro course?
Tuflehundon replied to mikelegacy's topic in Golf Talk
Never have, but my Wife has talked about getting me a round at TPC Sawgrass next year. I have wanted to play there for a long time. -
I think technology has helped, but at the same time they have made changes to make it harder for the Pros. Just like the groove changes they recently made. The Pros are going to do well no matter what. I Think the Tech helps the regular guys like us more than anyone.

prescription sunglasses
Tuflehundon replied to 5ironkid's topic in Balls, Carts/Bags, Apparel, Gear, Etc.
Just go wear you got your glasses from. You can even get wrap around lenses now in prescription glasses. Mine cost a little more than $150, but I got all the upgrades lens wise. -
Most difficult course you've ever played....
Tuflehundon replied to marrsh28's topic in Golf Courses and Architecture
Magnolia Plantation in Lake Mary, FL. (near Orlando) Tight fairways, and from the blues there is water in play on 15 of the holes. Loved that course though, and I used to play it a lot. It taught me to look at course management differently. Sometimes it was better to hit a wood or even iron off of the tee to get a better layup shot that to use a driver and end up in trouble. I think I learned more playing there than anywhere else I have played. When people would ask me were I played and I mentioned Magnolia Plantation, on more than one occasion they would ask me if I was a masochist. -
My longest was 320. It was on a dogleg left par 5. A buddy scoped the flag at 350 (it was a 90* dogleg left) and bet me $20 I couldn't make it over the water. The Edge of the water scoped at 305. I lined up and gave it everything I had, and barely made it over. Ended up getting Eagle on the hole, made a good chip onto the green, just 2ft shy of the hole. I tried a couple of times after that and always ended up just short and in the water. Not sure I could do it again. I average 260ish, so it was a heck of a hit for me. My buddy who bet me tried to, and he ended up in the water.

I say go for it as well. I just picked up a 7 wood that matched my 3W & 5W. I love the club and hit it so much better than my 4H. I have been thinking about getting a 9W myself now.

At what point would you recommend upgrading irons?
Tuflehundon replied to turbosdad's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
I'm gonna agree with this guy. I'd try getting a lesson or 2 before buying new clubs if the ones you have are OK. I got new clubs at the advice of my Instructor. He recommended that I get fitted and get new clubs that fit me better. Then we did more lessons. I have another lesson scheduled for August and then another in December. Lessons will help you much more than new clubs IMHO. -
Heck, I have 3 towels hanging from mine. 1 that I get damp before the game to help clean the clubs, another that I use to dry the clubs, and one that I use for my hands and grips. I guess that only odd thing I have in my bag is a swing trainer club. It's weighted and has a training grip. It technically gives me 15 clubs, but I never use it except at the range, and I just don't feel like taking it out. If I was playing a tourney or something like that I would take it out. But I always just play friendly games for fun.

If you could figure a way to carry it so that it wouldn't get in the way, then go for it. You'd have to get inventive about it. One of the things I like about my Skycaddie is that it clips to my belt. When I use it, it takes 2 seconds to look at it and have it put away. It has actually made my game play go faster since I am not having to second guess my distance and which club to use. Skycaddie SG5's can be had on Ebay for $80 to $110, depending on condition. I like mine way better than the apps I used before. They drained my battery so fast my phone would be dead by 15. I've used my Skycaddie for 3 rounds and haven't had to charge it yet.

65/20/15 Practice Ratios: Where to Devote Your Practice Time
Tuflehundon replied to iacas's topic in Swing Thoughts
I have changed up my practice sessions a little, so I figured I'd post again. I've gotten back into golf after being out for a few years, and have had to get things back to normal again. It's taken me a couple of months, but I am getting consistent again due to practice. My daughter has been going to the 1st Tee lessons every Saturday, so I use that time for my practice sessions to. I will usually start off in the chipping area. I'll take the bucket of balls and drop them at random locations around the green area and try different shots to get them as close to the hole as I can. After that I will go to the putting area and do some work there for 20 to 30 minutes, depending on how long I spent at the chipping area. Finally I will go to the driving area. I'll start off there with a sand wedge. I'll pick a target between 40 & 80 yrds, and go for that. Then I move up to an 8 iron, then a 5 iron, then a 5 wood. I finish my session with my Driver. I take breaks here and there while on the range, and I will go check on my daughter, who is usually just a few lanes away. Main reason I have to step away is my foot, broke it a few years ago and that's why I had to stop playing. After several swings at the range it starts to hurt quite a bit. So I walk it off for a few, then I am fine to go back. Doesn't give me issues at the chipping or putting areas, or on the course. Just when I am doing several full swings right after the other. I am pretty good with my Driver and Woods, so I don't spend as much time on them. When I played a few years ago, I spent most of my time with my Driver and Woods, and I think that was a big mistake. My short game is what was always lacking, so that is what I work on the most now. My putting still isn't were it used to be, but it is getting better. I am also tending to put the ball closer to the hole now so I am eliminating those long putts that I have problems with. After her lesson we usually play a round together. After about another month of this, I am going to take a couple of lessons, and then do it all over again. The Wife got me 2 private lessons for our anniversary. I think getting my daughter into Golf was one of the best things I have done in a while. I really enjoy playing with her, and she enjoys it to. I no longer have to justify any of my golf purchases to her, as a matter of fact she will see something and ask if I could use it now. I get to play gold at least once a week, and go to all these courses that I have always wanted to. We even just booked a vacation were my Daughter and I get to play a round of golf every morning while we are gone. -
I'd say yes, just because it would be cumbersome. I have a Skycaddie, and have a few friends that use GPS apps. Those fit in your pocket so they are easy to use. The Ipad you would have to keep in the cart and could really slow things down.
