I used to leave my driver at home occasionally but not any more. Since the larger head drivers have become so popular it's much easier to hit the driver than it was prior to the new designs.

My favorite is still Arnold Palmer...the greatest ambassador to the game that I've ever seen. Yes, there are some exciting new players and young players out there but Palmer set the standard for others to aspire to. And that standard covers more than just swinging a club.

Mid 1990s don't recall the details but I remember the course.

The GPS units, Garmin, etc. are pretty cool but they are pricey.. I still use my old rangefinder and it works just fine for me.

Depending on the group we usually play either 50 Cents or a dollar; per hole birdies closest to the pin on par 3's longest drive on par 5's Got a friend who plays for $1000 lowest score with his Friday foursome. At the end of the year the one who has won the thousand bucks the most during the year treats the foursome + Wives to dinner at Bobs Chop House.

Who is the most famous person you've golfed with?

Thomas Haden Church. -
here are a few suggestions; 1- leave your driver at home and use a 3 wood on the tee 2- practice long putts. make your goal to try to 2 putt every green. Most amateur golfers usually come up short when they do manage to hit the green and end up with a long first putt. if you can 2 putt every green instead of 3 putting you'll shave 18 strokes off your game right away. 3- practice chipping. Like coming up short on the green, coming up short on your approach shot is very common for amateurs. You can save a lot of strokes if you can chip well. Along with chipping practice, try using your 8 iron for chip shots. You may find it's easier to accomplish a better chip shot with an 8 iron than a wedge.

What is the most annoying guy at your course like?
vo-man replied to Todd Ruggere's topic in Golf Talk
The most annoying guy at my club used to be a white trash hillbilly who spit tobacco juice in the cup just before you'd make a birdie putt. I made the mistake of playing 9 holes with the guy ...but only once. The club finally sent him packing. -
Used to walk, Back surgery made me a carter.

Lets see..... new clubs every 20 years or so comes out to about 50 bucks a year ... then there's course fees...twice a month at $37 per round... add in some extras-hot dogs & beer at the turn around... balls...I only bought 2 dozen balls in the past year. call it $1000 bucks a year.
-
my local course has a senior rate for anyone over 50.....$17 and that includes the cart for 18 holes.

Service deserves a tip. and anyone who doesn't tip a gal for bringing you something to drink while your out on the course is a cheap sob. besides, if a $2.35 bottle of water is breaking the bank for you then you shouldn't be playing golf to begin with because you clearly can't afford it. end of argument.

we had a guy for a while who liked to spit his tobacco juice in the hole on the greens. I think someone cleaned his clock one day cause he disappeared and was never heard from again. -
I use a Simmons 600 yd range finder. For ball flight distance I just range it back to the tee box from ball.

Just the ball sweeper at the driving range!

Since I don't have a sponsor who'll overnight me a new club, should I ruin one with a shot off of a rocky or hard surface, I don't mind moving the ball a few inches if needed in a non competitive round. And in a competitive round, if it's just a foursome, we always establish the rules before the first tee. In a tourny I always stick to the rules. Being that I'm not a pro and no one is paying me to play this game or display their corporate logo I don't mind adjusting the hard and fast rules to increase the enjoyment factor, as long as everyone in the group is in agreement and all playing to the same rules. Around here there's also"WIllies Rules"....like: "Put the ball where it would have gone if that tree or pond wasn't there" We haven't actually played by any of his rules but it's a bit funny to think of WIllie playing golf on his private course and establishing his own set of rules.

Green grass, blue sky, not being at work. Those all add up to a great day.

What irritates me with scrambles is finding out that a bunch of hacks who can't shoot under 100 individually won the tournament with a score in the high 50s.

I have a Ping Eye 2 One Iron and end up using it every round I play. Depending on the course, trees, etc, It's a great tool for getting a long shot under low branches and up to the green or for tight par 4s where you need that yardage. I hit mine about 200 yards with a relaxed swing but can also pull off shorter shots and a low trajectory pitch and run with it. When I leave it at home I usually end up wishing I'd brought it. Those old Ping one irons go for about $20 bucks on Ebay now. Many players have abandoned the old long iron but it can be a versatile club.

the 5 iron is my 150 yd club.

Garmin S1 works well, easy as it gets. I use a Simmons rangefinder. Quick, easy, inexpensive, and fits in the handy rangefinder pocket on my bag.

the water on most of the golf courses in this area is pretty scary. it can keep whatever balls it catches.

+1 If there were hundreds of thousands of dollars on the line maybe...but since I'm not a pro what's the point? take the drop and move on. wet socks suck.
