5 GIR is ok for that one bad round. 3 Fairways is kind of bad. Does the OP use the driver on every single hole? I'll usually switch to a 3W or hybrid if I am having problems like that. I am on a similar journey. I practice every single day, in a golf dome (Chicago...), 20 min full swing, 20min pitch/chip and 30 min putting. Just got back from a golf trip to Cali, broke 80 for the first time, twice!! Now just waiting for the snow to be gone and should reach singles by May or so. I have never played in any tournaments, never felt ready, but might try it this summer. Good luck to both of us. :)

Hmm I've been taking lessons for about two years, which has given me understanding what happens during my swing. Keep working on it with an instructor, that's all I can tell you. Try not to be frustrated, remember it's about the journey.... :)

If you've been only playing for a year so far, don't get frustrated that you are not in 80's yet. Many people work their whole lives to get into 80's and its not that easy to do. As for your swing, and not knowing what to expect, the best in the game like to say that you should hit balls before you play, and see what is working that day. Since you are taking lessons, there should be something that you are currently working on, something that when not done, you will mess up. For example, I come over the top, so I'm trying to slow down my transition and make sure my lower body goes first on the downswing. BUT, when I hit a shot or two, when I start practice, and it is really really bad, I got back to my basics. I check my grip, posture and things that I have learned in previous lessons, just to make sure I am doing everything that I've learned already. So for example, i'll check if I'm making a good turn going back etc. Going back to basics usually helps for me, hopefully you can use that to help you. :)

I think golf is more fun when I don't keep score.

I've been playing for about six years. Can't imagine playing with no score. Would not make any sense to me. -
Iphone GPS apps: Golfshot vs Golflogix
sopel10 replied to Jonnyy8699's topic in Balls, Carts/Bags, Apparel, Gear, Etc.
Have been using golfshot for about 3 years. Used to be buggy on the android. Works great on the iPhone. Not sure what some of you are doing to have an issue with your battery. iPhone 5 and I get 2 rounds in on a battery. I play 36 a day all the time. -

Posted a review. Might be too late, but my pro deserved a good review anyways. (Gary Pinns) Thx

1. Play 100 rounds (81 in 2013) 2. Single digit handicap (12.6 lowest in 2013)

5 years to get down from 26-28 to 14. I was at 14 last year but decided to change my swing, new swing is capable of so much more :-)

Depends what you mean power, I can't bench press more than 120 lbs but can drive the ball pretty far. I am not really flexible, only thing I got going for me is I'm 6'3. I would argue that most golfers, with a proper technique and practice, can get to 270. Not average 270 carry, but hit it to about 270 total distance on a good hit. It personally took me about 5 years to start hitting it around 260-270 with roll on a great hit. Now I know most players on this forum hit it 300 plus, although I've yet to meet someone like that (80 rounds so far this year, different courses, different states). This took many lessons, and lots of practice.

Most players at that level don't keep the right score. Count every stroke and every penalty (stroke and distance when ob) and it quickly adds up. My dad used to shot in 90's, he is in a slump, shots about 110 every time, but scores every stroke. Many times we are paired with people on his level or worse and they somehow shot 95. I don't purposely count peoples strokes but you can usually tell if a guy had an 8 on a hole....put me down for a bogey he says to his buddy.

:-D I was offered advice from a 30 capper over the weekend...that was interesting ;-)

18 hole, par 4 dogleg right with water on the right, starting at 270. Hit a small slice about 250-260 to the right. Had branches about 5 feet from the ground, about 10 yards in front of me. 130 to the pin, over the whole lake. Took and extra club, hit it under the tree and hit the green, 25 feet from the pin. I was very excited, I usually have problems flying the ball low :) 85 going into this hole....3 putted for a 90 (playing 7000 yards, longest ever for me) :-(

Somewhat updated distances from few months ago, these are not averages - these are clubs I would hit when given a certain carry: Driver 240 carry, sometimes I'll go for 250 carry but not a hazard, bunker for example 3w 220 carry 3hy 200-205 carry 4i 195 5i 187 6i 179 7i 170 8i 161 9i 150 45 wedge 138 50 wedge 125 55 wedge 113 60 wedge 92 The shorter the club, the more accurate these distances are. And for the really long hitters posting...I play 60-70 rounds a year and I get out driven once in a while, maybe 2-3 times a season I meet someone that gets it out there as far as me or few yards longer. I use gps and a range finder and it's amusing when I play with someone, they'll hit the best drive of the day, I measure it and always ask how far he thinks he hit. The lower the handicap, the closer they are usually, but average golfer thinks he hit it 280 total when it's actually somewhere around 250 (total with roll). 250 drive is way above average and most golfer don't realize that, 250 on most par 4s gives u a wedge or less into the green.

Sounds like u mess around a lot with different swings. I usually try to have the club do the work for me, trying to short a swing for me usually ends up with me flying the green (more controlled compact swing). Reason why others might be hitting shorter irons might also be equipment. You wouldn't believe some of the lofts they put irons these days.

Just this Sunday. First time I've ever played alone. Got to the course and the guy in the pro shop told me to hurry and tee off before the 4 some that just got here. Was about to tee off on par 5 when they pulled up. Bit more pressure, hit it almost straight, small fade on very slight dogleg left. Found the ball off fairway much farther than I anticipated. I usually track my shots with golfshot but no time, close to 275. Had 231 to middle, uphill. I usually stick with irons so hit 4 iron knowing I couldn't reach it. Almost got it on the fringe, had perfect 50/50 chip. After hitting it, I knew it was going in and all I was thinking about was....nobody here to see this but me. Very special anyways. Ended up with an 88 with a 9 on the 9th hole....(haven't shot 80's since last summer)

Driver: 235 average (longest drives of the day usually around 265 GPS verified) with roll 3 wood: 225 (longest of the day usually around 240) with roll 3 hybrid: 210 4i: 189 5i: 176 6i: 168 7i: 159 8i: 150 9i: 142 P: 134 G: 122 S: 100 L: never hit full - 70? With these numbers i can play courses up to 6700 yards long. Longer than that and we have a problem. Courses 6400 and below - i can hit an iron/hybrid of off every other tee. Brand new irons (jpx825 pros) and still getting used to them. Hopefully will get closer to 200 yards with a 4 iron by the summer. Driver should get closer to 250 also. Have been taking lessons for past 2 years - index is a bit inflated - hoping to be as close to single as possible this summer. At the end of the last summer started posting some low 80's very frequently :)
