I really enjoy Big Break. Jason was on Big Break Academy last night. He was just as boring on there as he was on the actual show. Some neat swing tips came up that I plan to try my next outing to the range.

A vanity bagger?

Bubba's swing on the tee shot was garbage...no wonder it came up short, horrendous follow through. He chickened out on the shot because he wasn't confident that a 9 would make it. I can't speak for the conversations leading up to the shots, but to chew out the caddie loud enough for everyone to hear is not called for. His tone was whiney and childish.

I tried hybrids a couple years ago...didn't like them. Mind you, I have never been able to hit fairway woods off the turf either. My 3i plays on average 220 yards. I have never felt the need to fix what aint broke yet.

I didn't mind it...it wasn't when Duke was lining up a shot or anything...It reminded me of Happy Gilmore when he is in the tee box and the marshal puts up the "quiet" sign. He turns to the crowd, and tells em to make a little noise! I think golf needs more guys that really show their enthusiasm for the sport!

The super glue is to cover the open skin after the blister has popped (like second skin). You can also use super glue as an artificial callus in blister prone areas.

I like seeing a course that makes sense. You know exactly why the course designer put that bunker where he/she did (and no, it wasn't so you could hit it!). I like seeing forced lay ups due to hazards, or high risk high reward shots that can have you putting for eagle or triple bogey all depending on your tee shot.

Haney is just trying to stay relevant...even though he is not. He has absolutely no clue what Tiger's pre-Major routine is.

Your skin will toughen up over time. Hitting 180 balls over 2 hours is a ton. I try to limit myself to just 60 each time I go out. If I am working on something specific, I will go a couple days in a row rather than hitting too many in one day.

Tiger changed the game of golf. He turned it from a gentleman's game into a true sport played by athletes. I was 11 or 12 when Tiger hit the big show...I already golfed, but I know a bunch of my friends ran out to find clubs because they wanted to be the next Tiger. Every day you were guaranteed to see someone on the course rockin a red nike golf shirt and black hat...every day. He's done more for the game than just win a bunch of majors.

I didn't like the way Bubba acted either...rather childish if you ask me. You know the yardage from the tee, and you know how far you hit your clubs...if you don't agree with the caddy's club RECOMENDATION, then you should probably decide that before you hit your shot. Unless you are a lost puppy who needs his hand held constantly. Grow up. And the third shot from 125 the divot went almost to the green... I lost a lot of respect for him today...

Myrtle Beach Course for High Handicap
mvarley84 replied to LI Hacker's topic in Golf Courses and Architecture
Best value IMO is World Tour...It's really neat to see all those holes from TV in person, on one course. The Dunes is really nice also, but I preferred WT. And RayG is right, most course rates include a power cart. -

I would recommend going to a local golf shop and swing a few sets of clubs. Get them to find you something that fits your swing, then go online and find them used. If you are REALLY on a budget, you can just pick up a yardsale set and go have some fun. Don't think for a second that you NEED to go out and spend $400 on a driver, $700 on irons, and $150 on a putter. I am using Ben Hogan Edge irons from the late 80's...love em! Picked them up for $30.

I am outside every day (weather pending of course) chipping and putting. I have a small putting mat that is set up in the corner of my back yard...If I want to be really adventurous, I chip over my pool onto the green. I use my net maybe twice a week just to keep the swing going, and I hit the range to practice my range control once a week. My playing consists of 9 holes one week with work, then 18 with buddies the next. Definitely spend a lot more time practicing than I do actually playing, but I enjoy the practicing as much as I do the playing!

My ball striking really improved when I was told by a friend to stop trying to smash the ball. I generally have a decent swing, but my mechanics go to shit when I really lay into it. Now when I play, I look at the shot, figure out what club I should need, then I club up 1 and do a nice easy swing. My miss hits have gone down substantially.

Terrible golfer, but loving the game, do I bother you good golfers?
mvarley84 replied to Scooter212's topic in Golf Talk
I usually do take practice swings. Not full swings, just a nice gentle swing to get a feel for everything. I always do my practice swings while the others in my group are playing their shots, so it literally doesn't add any time unless I am away. -
All those scores I posted are from tournaments. As I said before, I rarely keep score when I just go out to shoot a round. I have played in some scrambles, but I prefer not to. Almost all of the tournaments I play in are singles stroke play....You buy into the tournament (usually $100 or so, some more expensive) and the "purse" is prizes.

I probably play a half dozen or so rounds a year (mostly charity tourney's) where I play by USGA rules. As you can see, never submitted for a handicap. I don't need a number to measure my level of improvement, I'm not at that point of my game yet. I can feel how a round is going. Heck, if I make it to the 6th hole still using the same golf ball I know I've been driving the ball well. I've been playing since I was a youngster (played pretty much every day from 11-15), took some time off just playing rec ball, then became a little more dedicated last year (I'm 28). I've posted some good scores (I'm typically high 80's low 90's on a par 72), but have pulled out some wild rounds (both much higher and much lower). My best round ever (twice) is a 5 over 77. I was 14 the first time, playing in a local Jr tournament. The second time was this year in a charity tournament.

Well, according to some on this forum, if I am not following all the rules when I play, then I am not really playing "Golf", therefore I wouldn't need to submit a score for a game I wasn't really playing.
-
Completely agree with that. Anyone who is trying to claim a handicap should be following the rules (at least for the rounds they are counting towards the HC.) Also, anyone trying to say "I shot a (insert bullshit number here)" should have played by the rules.
-
Done this with a couple guys from work. Really really fun. We used push carts and had all our clubs though. Finished 18 holes in 1.25 hours. Awesome workout too!
-
What are you even arguing about anymore? Ok fine, don't call it golf...don't really care. The title is "Is it better to play fast or play by the rules". My original response was I would RATHER a group played quickly instead of nit picking over rules. It is an opinion poll...and just like *******s, everyone is entitled to one. Yes it is fully possible to follow the rules and play quickly...but that isn't what was asked in the thread title now was it.
-
This is just arguing semantics at this point...Cheers Oxford.

Really man? Not playing golf because I'm not following every rule to a T? You just sound nit picky and petty. If I go play a 3 on 3 charity hockey tournament, am I not playing hockey?? But there's no goalies and the nets are tiny....I guess we should call it stick puck with tiny net tournament from now on. I do not have an attitude...and I never said anyone was being a prick. I said that elitist pricks (no one in particular, just in general) ruin any sport...they feel that there is a certain standard that must be met, otherwise you are a poser and a wanna be. I will go and play GOLF to the rules that I feel necessary to follow to fulfill my enjoyment and to not interfere with anyone else.
