Please Evaluate My "Bogey" Game
McMullenCPA replied to Dynasty90's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
I agree with you Strandly. I shot an 89 on Tuesday that I was pretty proud of. The course was not very forgiving off the tee, and upon reflection I realized I had to "punch out" 9 times. Had I given myself a chance for GIRs I probably could have converted 9 of those "punch outs" to 4-5 shots saved or more. -
I was using an analogy to help explain why an official handicap is taken. I'd be a pretty lousy accountant if I didn't know that! ;-) EDIT: I am a pretty lousy accountant, but that's not the reason LOL
-
Before I calculated my handicap I just called myself a bogey golfer. Handicap measures your potential and not your average though. When I actually calculated my handicap I realized my handicap was a few strokes better than bogey golf, although lately with my back hurting it's been creeping up but I hope it doesn't creep up any higher. I'm playing today and I have REALLY high expectations.
-
I just say it on every hole to impress my friends or whoever I'm playing with and if they say anything I will get REALLY defensive to the point it's just awkward for everyone and nobody has any fun.
-
Why do auditors have to come and check out the accounting books when I know I did them right I have the same sentiment as you though, I had been calculating them myself and I just signed up to make it official in case I wanted to compete in tournaments and make millions going pro
-
Mine's official and current. It doesn't mean I'm happy or proud of it. I don't compete in tournaments yet so for right now I guess I just use it as a measuring stick of my game. I haven't done this yet, but I might try today. Instead of playing to the course par, I'm going to play to beat my course handicap, basically beat bogey golf. Might help me make better course management decisions and put less strain on this knot in my back that won't go away (if I am not swinging as hard as I can every time).

how to politely tell somebody they are BAD at golf?
McMullenCPA replied to clearwaterms's topic in Golf Talk
If you see a bad golfer, even if you aren't golfing in his group, you gotta just run up to him and get in his face and start pushing him and stuff. -
I took my wife out once a couple years ago. She hit middle irons straight and I think she had fun but we haven't gone out since. Lately she has expressed interest, as stated earlier in the thread, I think it's moreso to spend time together rather than really learn the game. I guess I just don't want it to turn into this:

Who here has broken 70 on a par 70 or higher golf course?
McMullenCPA replied to tmac20's topic in Golf Talk
I played a round back in late May where I birdied the first hole with a long putt and that sent me on a tear; I was -3 after 5 holes. I finished the front 9 at an even par. I had never even broke 90 prior to this, and at the turn I was thinking, to heck with breaking 90, I want to break 80! Hole 10 is a short par 3. I put it just off the green, messed up my pitch and 3 putted for a 5. I finished the back nine +10 and ended the day with an 83. Since then I consistently hit upper 80s to low 90s but I haven't as of yet been able to string together another really solid round. My handicap dropped to 12.5 after that round, and is now creeping up! EDIT: Now as I re-read the subject it states "break 70" not break 80. Ho-hum. -
When do balls start to make a difference for newer golf players
McMullenCPA replied to JaapB's topic in Golf Talk
Good point. The more I think of it, My last six rounds, earliest to most recent, I lost 1, 5, 4, 4, 8, 8. These past couple of weeks I've had a bad knot in my back, and when it flares up, my mechanics went to sh#t. I'd play it safe and tee off with a 5 or 6 iron and then nasty hook it WAY into the woods. That is the cause of the OB tee shots I'm sure now. My back feels a lot better after taking a week off and I can't wait to get back out there tomorrow. I still think I should be paying closer attention to the ball I'm using though. For example, with putting, I've pretty much eliminated the 3-putts save for maybe 1 per round. On the flip side, I only have maybe 4-5 1-putts and I'm sure it's because my approach could be better, or I'm just missing too many close-mid range putts. I wonder if I used 1 type of ball the whole way through some of those approaches might land a little closer and some of those close putts might find their way into the hole. -

McMullenCPA replied to JaapB's topic in Golf Talk
This thread is great! I've never cared what ball I'm hitting, I wouldn't ever use a range ball, but I haven't bought new balls because of years of accumulation from the course or gifts. It never mattered to me what ball I'd hit, even if it was found from the water from who knows how long ago. One thing I noticed about my game is, I consistently shoot in the upper 80s - lower 90s, but I lose so many strokes to lost balls every round. The last 5 rounds I've lost an average of 5.6 balls (probably 90% off the tee). I wonder using different types of balls every time has something to do with it. I am going to try and use 1 type of ball for a few rounds and see if I learn something about my game. -
How do you guys get your golf fix in the winter?
McMullenCPA replied to McMullenCPA's topic in Golf Talk
How much work was it installing the putting green? I would love to do that, we have a huge unfinished basement. Note - as an accountant, I'm not very handy at all unless it's a 10-key or a keyboard. -
I'm hoping this works for me as well. I will talk to the Mrs. about it. It would help if it was around the Dells to make it more of a family vacation where I sneak away for 18, rather than a golf trip I'm going on alone or taking my family with. Does that make sense? I'm a new Dad here trying to figure it all out haha Kevin

Seems like those 15-16 guys made a deal with the devil! I'm going to be watching Blixt because I enjoyed watching him at the Greenbrier. I know he won't finish anywhere near the top, but it'll be fun rooting for him and see where he lands when all the dust settles! -

Is there a place where you can follow a player hole by hole? I see this on every website for Tiger, like a hole-by-hole blog with live updates, but I can't find it for any other professional. -
I don't, but I think that's a great idea. When I caddied I would always have a towel soaking wet to clean off the golfer's ball when he got to the green and his clubs after every hit. I would like to have that, but I don't want to drench my clothes or the cart if I'm riding and my bag if I'm walking.

Well I think I can probably swing it so long as it's in August. When school starts up again my wife won't be as willing to leave because of work (she is a school teacher). I can't believe all the hours school teachers put in outside of school.

I'm at work, otherwise I totally would be watching, unless I was actually golfing. -

Woah! I thought he was playin' just fine through 8?!? What hapepened? Was Tiger teasing him? Edit: Okay maybe he wasn't, I just looked at the hole by hole and he was +4. Can't wait to read what happened! -

Wish I could be watching. I'm refreshing the Tiger hole by hole on USA Today. Seems like he's playing alright. Kinda bummed to see Faldo up there with a +8, would be nice to see him make the cut. Duval +5, I'd really like to see him make the cut but I almost think Faldo has a better shot still. -

Work re-imburses my YMCA membership, but since summer started I've neglected the YMCA in favor of golf for my free time (free time seems to be more and more of a rare luxury these days!). This would just be awesome if it were the case for our local YMCA. I will have to investigate. Thanks for sharing! -
what is your go to shot from 100 yards in the fairway?
McMullenCPA replied to onthehunt526's topic in Golf Talk
Earlier this year I would hit maybe a 80% 56 degree SW. . . not a fancy club, I think I bought it from Target or something like that for $20 years ago. Written on the club head: "For 70 yards or less". I could hit it 100% 130 yards and maybe a little farther off a tee. Lately I've gotten this knot in my back between my left shoulder blade and my spine and it's been just depressing. When I golf now, if I'm 100 yards out I'd probably go with an 80% PW. Thinking of going to a chiropractor or maybe having my wife take that PW at 80%, more of a baseball swing, and aim for mid back, just left of my spine. -

I was reading somewhere on here that a tournament adds a few strokes naturally with the nerves and what have you. I've never played in a tournamet. Well not since I was maybe 12 so I can't attest, but I know I play my best when I'm alone or with only one other. On a busy day on the course I start to get almost panicky about rate of play alone, can't imagine what tournament nerves would do to my game. Although I like to think I would just crush it! -

I had this thought earlier but it escaped me. I'm not old enough for that to start happening yet, but growing up in Wisconsin with all the consistent beer consumption it shouldn't surprise me. Anyway, the new house has a 2.5 stall garage so I will be able to swing away in there so long as I have a mat or something to protect the clubs from the concrete! Man, that is dedication! I'm hoping I wouldn't have to go through those lengths, but we have a year round range similar to this maybe 30 minutes away and I have similar frozen finger range memories! I suppose the garage isn't heated so I don't know how well it would work afterall. At least I'd be out of the wind and under a roof!
