  1. I go to the range 3-4 times a weeek, mostly in interest of time. Working night shifts I'll hit the range after work before bed and then I try to play once a week at least.
  2. I'd like to know as well. I have a 9.0 degree and am getting into serious mode for a new driver this year. I can hit my 9.0 degree high enough but it takes a concerted effort, otherwise its a dart. That's probably down to my mechanics though.
  3. They don't have anything for California, kind of a bummer. I'm thinking of joining the Golf Channel Tour next year and trying that. Was going to do it this year but some stuff came up. It looks fun but I've heard kind of mixed things about it (mainly cost). Also, the NCGA (Northern California Golf Association) has regular course clubs but also has e-clubs, for those who don't belong to a particular course. I joined a e-club 3 years ago, its been great. You can still enter the tourneys and there are club sponsored tourneys as well.
  4. She's decent. Wears makeup like its going out of style. Cool that she actually partakes in playing though. I'm a Wynn McMurray fan myself. Quote: (I kinda like the "On The Range" show they've started doing Wednesday nights this year) Yeah, that is quickly becoming one of my favorites.
  5. I play whites, which usually come in under 6400 yards. Pretty much all of my playing partners play the same, save for a couple of better players. Every so often I play longer tees if its a course I frequent and just want a different perspective. Monday I played a course that I've played several times before but apparently they underwent a change in tee placement - and didn't let any of us in the group know. So the whites were now ~5900 and blues ~6300. We were all pretty confused because some holes the tee was the same, others it wasn't.
  6. Couple things for me. One, if I'm swinging the driver well that day, I go with that unless its a shorter par 4 (less than 375) or I have to carry something crazy. Also, for some reason I can hook my driver "better" than my 3 wood so on a dogleg left I usually go driver. And the course itself comes into play as well. I play a course in my area that is HEAVILY tree lined and narrow fairways, so I go with 3 wood or even 3 hybrid. But yeah, had a period last year where I left the driver in the bag for a month or more. Just could not do anything with it. Amazing.
  7. As a huge Tiger fan, I was pretty excited at looking forward to reading this. But, I think I'm going to pass not because I don't want to know what Tiger is going through in his career (there hasn't been a more micro-analyzed athlete in history) but because I am sick of Hank Haney in general, not to mention these leaked excerpts are giving it a more "gossipy" tone. I was hoping for something different - but it is Haney*. *Fitting to see Haney decked out in TaylorMade gear now days.
  8. So, about 15 minutes to check the specs, is it pretty easy for them to make the adjustments? I'm pretty sure mine are screwy as well, its been about a year since I got mine from the factory. I hit off mats a good deal of the time.
  9. Thanks for all the replies! I do like the fade but the kicker is in my head I'm naturally wanting to hit a hook (draw for you pros). So I have to consciously tell myself I am going for a fade swing and execute it; and what ends up happening is when I am working on other things (tempo, balance, path, etc) I haven't been focused on my alignment at all - stupidly I admit. Had a good session today, I was making correct aim and alignment for both slices and hooks and I'm now more aware of where the hell I'm actually trying to go with the swing. And no, I wasn't hitting shots at the target, I was slicing bad or even shanking. I might make the one good compensation move to get a ball to the target but it was not consistent by any means.
  10. Out at the range this morning working on my tempo and balance when one of my friends noticed something. Apparently, what I *thought* was square to the target line I was actually open - and I've been this way for a couple months! Once I got myself squared properly, it felt like I was really closed to the target. I honestly am not sure why I started gravitating toward the open stance but it definitely was the culprit to me coming over the top and even battling the shanks every now and then. Is there some mental issue where one starts moving toward a closed or open stance?
  11. The Cell chip that is in PS3 hasn't been touched by developers, the problem lies in the rest of the components (GPU, RAM, etc). Sony could easily still use the Cell in the next PlayStation and be fine, its the other pieces of hardware and how they manage their RAM allocations (currently it is severely limited in PS3 - 256mb cap while 360 has 512mb dynamic). This is why XMB slows to a crawl during games and why we cannot get party chat in XMB. As for waiting for next-gen, keep in mind the first year or two of EA Sports games on the current-gen stuff was a disaster. Maybe they learned from it but this IS EA we are talking about. I'd go so far as to buy the game for PS3/360 even if a next-gen title is available, for the first year anyway. And as for Tiger '13. I'm really looking forward to it but mainly for the social stuff - i.e. online country clubs. Definitely will use Move with the golf club attachment. Still debating on whether to get the Master's Collection, which has the Par 3 course and practice range and some other Augusta items. I'm fortunate enough to be heading to the Par 3 Wednesday this year so it would be cool to be able to play what I see.
  12. For me, my approach to range time this year has been completely different than in the past. Before, I would definitely use targets but that was about it. Oh, it's 140 so I'm going to hit my 9i for 30 balls. Then move to next target and repeat. Now, I have specific things I work on and am ingraining - mainly tempo and balance, as well as different shots inside 100 yards. I work on swing plane stuff at home in my living room, where I've got a mirror and sometimes my camera. But on the range - and obviously the course - the last thing I want to worry about is plane. To me, tempo, balance, and shot type is more important and are the easiest for me to fix during a round. Messing about with swing plane in a round leads to disasters for me.
  13. We're heading to Maui in October and are slated to play Royal Ka'anapali and Kapalua Plantation. Crossing my fingers for nothing more than light winds! Even if its gale-force I'll be out there; very much looking forward to both courses.
  14. Mine actually came this past Tuesday. Par 5, 2nd shot was 220 out. I've talked before about going for this green in two but never have the balls as the green is surrounded by water in back, to the right, and in front. This being my first round of the year and really just a round to gauge how my winter practice went I decided to try it. Hit my 3 hybrid and put the ball on the green. Left about a 30 foot eagle putt and took birdie.
  15. Been away from the site for a couple months so just ran into this thread. I finished my C25K plan in the beginning of November and then ran a half-marathon a week before Thanksgiving. Doing C25K is the best physical decision I've ever made. Not only did I lose 20+ pounds (with change in diet of course) but I've also become hooked on running. Up until this point I HATED running, even on treadmills. Now I run 3-4 days a week and am doing another half in March. I've also met some really cool people along the way. For my first half we did do the Jeff Galloway plan (run/walk) and finished in 2:23. For March, we are planning on running straight through for a 2:15 or better.
  16. In addition to Hilton Head, we will also be staying in the Atlanta area for a few days. Any thoughts on courses? Looking on GolfLink, seems there are a ton of private courses but we will need some public offerings. Looking at Crystal Lake CC for one round.
  17. Well, I took up running last September and lost 22 pounds and have altered my daily eating habits. So that was my start for 2012 (actually running another 1/2 marathon in March, I'm hooked!). I stayed away from golf this winter, except working on mental training as well as completely changing my approach to the game (more fun, less self-pressure). Started going to the range a week ago and have only worked on 100 yards and in. Moving toward using more options for this part of the course. So, I'm learning to use various shots. Also, green side stuff gave me fits last year. So, I've been practicing the hybrid putt from off the green, using PW to get roll outs, etc. And my putting. Got a jumbo grip put on my putter and have been working on the fluid back through motion rather than slapping at it as I was before. Played first round yesterday and shot 90 but I was really happy with the areas I focused on. Some old habits crept back in as the round wore on (tempo quickened, too many thoughts pre-shot) but its all good. Looking forward to this year so much!
  18. Hey all, fortunate to be making a trip to Augusta for the Par 3 tournament and practice rounds so we're going to head over to Hilton Head prior to and play a couple rounds. We're renting a villa in Fiddler's Cove and our group decided on playing 2 courses at Palmetto Dunes (Trent Jones and Hills). Got any thoughts or recommendations? Trying to keep the budget $250 or under as I've got a Maui trip in October to worry about. Seems like Palmetto offered some nice options for more reasonable cost (Sea Pines seemed outrageous). Kind of a bummer to only have 3 days to play with so many course options on the island.
  19. When is your trip or have you visited already? As jmorse mentioned, down in Visalia Valley Oaks is pretty good for cheap. And Ridge Creek in Dinuba is a nice course, although I find it a bit pricey for what it is (maybe $10 too much, not a big deal). Come up to the Fresno area and play Eagle Springs (formerly Brighton Crest). Very fun and challenging course in the foothills. Probably the best of the public offerings around here. Riverside is also a good one for ~$35.
  20. 89 (44/45) @ TPC Harding Park. First time playing there, great course. The rough was super tough as the Champions Tour is playing the Schwab Cup here in a couple weeks. Last time I saw rough like that was Torrey Pines about two months before the Buick. Still, had an awesome time and played decently. Greens were recently sanded so my putting was terrible - the greens were a lot slower than I was expecting and I never got used to them.
  21. Thanks for the replies. mvmac - Appreciate the suggestion for adding some club. Will definitely keep that in mind. I'm coming in from Fresno where we have dry weather. Heading out today @ 1130 for Harding so will post back tonight. drglew - Sounds ominous! I'm not down with rounds 5.5+ hours. Yikes. Hopefully we won't run into too much of that on a Monday morning but who knows. My buddy played Presidio a couple months back and said the pacing was pretty good so we shall see. Tomorrow is Presidio so I'll let you know.
  22. Anyone got some experiences at Harding Park? Heading up tomorrow to my friend's who lives in the city and we are playing Harding on Monday and Presidio on Tuesday. Harding looked awesome during the President's Cup two years ago but I've also heard it has had its lesser moments. Course doesn't look to play overly long but just hoping the wind is not too crazy. Weather has been beautiful the past couple days.
  23. Great thread. This is something I really need to work on over the winter. I was playing really good golf earlier this year and then at some point I felt like I had to work on posture - only I worked on the very wrong things. For awhile I was having lower back pain, got that sorted but I at address I'm still trying to keep a flat back and butt out. I'm with Zeph in that it should feel comfortable. I'm just sick of all the Peter Kostis-type bruhaha over these ramrod straight backs and perfectly aligned posture positions we see every weekend. Jack was pretty damn well rounded.
  24. Ah, the perils of 'selective golf coverage'. Any of you that have DirecTV or go on the net and watch the majors when they follow a group from first shot to last? So many times you will see bad shots, and the spin back is one of them. They will spin the ball right off the green sometimes when the ball landed hole high. Thing is, NBC/CBS/GC will 99% of the time only show the shots that end up good.
  25. 85 (41/44). So frustrated, definitely left
