Ever try to mimic Sergio Garcia's Swing?
Magnus replied to nevets88's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
Agreed. The lag creates speed when you release it, and thus power......but your timing must be impeccable. There is a reason he is an elite pro - and I am not. -
Tons of Odyssey White-Hot XG stuff for $100 new. Too many blade styles to mention. It's not all mallets from Odyssey :)

Story time... So...I have played golf my whole life, well, since I was 8, so 25 yrs of golf. I played high school golf, and in some amateur tournaments. Well, I played in my first member-guest tourney at a friends golf club this weekend. (2 man best ball - ie you card your best score but play your own ball) Let me tell you, if you have never tried match play, try it, you will learn what pressure is. And have a blast, even if you play worse than you could possibly imagine. We qualified with a 68 and made first flight on Friday, of course this was stroke play and a fun round....the last non-pressure shots of the weekend. Sat and Sun I proceeded to puke on my shoes over and over, chunked wedges, 3 putts from 5 feet, etc....so basically nothing I have done as a 5 handicapper in oh............forever. I am a bit hard on myself and everyone to a man told me that they did this their first try, and it is expected, and, trust me, I believe it, so I feel a bit better......BUT How quickly being 1 down and looking at a birdie to even the match on the 9th turns into a 3 putt, and then quickly you are 5 down a few holes later - momentum is a nasty, nasty enemy. That summarizes Saturday. 5&4 loss. Sunday - we played 2 retirees who hit their tee balls less than 200 yrds, and yep, you guessed it - they chipped in 2x and made 3 or 4 20 ft+ putts, we didn't get past the 13th hole. 6&5 loss. So I will lick my wounds, practice my putting (cause that is this crazy games great equalizer) and watch this years Ryder Cup with a different prospective, and appreciation of the pressure. (The 3 steak dinners, breakfast buffets, and open bar for 3 days made it well worth playing, and the knowledge gained is priceless.)

There is your problem. You need bounce. Typically 10 or more in the sand. Try a 54 or 56 degree with 10-14 deg of bounce. My guess is you dig too much with that 62 degree 0 bounce wedge.

I'm now thinking that I will never get the 30 seconds of my life back that I just wasted reading this......

How about Woody Austin's two shot sequence on the par 5 18th hole at the Zurich Classic in New Orleans earlier this year. He topped a hybrid out of the rough for his second, which went about 15 feet in front of him, and then hit it again - about 30 yrds right of the green into the lake - made a double bogey 7 when he needed a birdie to tie for the win...pretty bad shot under the circumstances.

Congrats!!!!!!! Like Christmas morning, eh? I think you'll love 'em. Just be patient with them and hit em in the middle!!! Play well!

Irons - upgrade or keep what I have?
Magnus replied to kregan's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
Nothing wrong with trying to improve your game, and maybe trying to hit a more demanding iron. Make no mistake the Rac Forged TP's are going to be more difficult to hit. I know you want to work the ball, but trust me you need to hit these consistently in the center of the club? Ask yourself if you can legitimately hit the center of the clubface more often then not?...But, you may not know unless you try. I say go ahead, but if your a 24 hdcp then you may need to 'grow' into these clubs, if you catch my drift. My advice - go to an outdoor dealer who has irons for you to try outside, and maybe demo a set of blades - and find out before you put your $$ down. -
Why do you change your driver?

Confidence? -
New TaylorMade "Burner" Driver...WOW!!!
Magnus replied to mrbillinoc's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
Thats what kills me about TM. Their standard is 1* shut on 9.5 lofted drivers, 1.5* on 10.5. But then if you want a club, like you said that doesn't look 10 degree shut, you have to spend more $$ on the 'TP' version. I realize that the majority of people slice, but making a neutral, or open face club an upcharge is, well, idk what it is, but for me it's expensive! -
There may be a few more people whose opinions on the rest of your life you should value more than those of people on a golf forum

Ok....here it goes.... First off...great idea. Also, may I mention, perfect cut-off timing on the videos - before this person can lean or bend indicating where the ball goes... Question 1: I believe this person plays to an 18 handicap. Why? Part guess, partly what I list below... Question 2 First hole - slice or pull, but it appears to start out left of target? Second hole - prob less than 250 and to the right? Third hole - pop-up, possibly a bit right? Question 3 I did not go frame by frame, or try to break the video down - maybe some people will, I just went with what I saw at full speed on the videos. He takes the club a bit outside on the backswing - the clubhead is outside of his hands, but he appears to correct this pretty well on the way back down and does not come over the top as bad as his initial backswing may lead me to believe. Second video really looks like a reverse pivot, and his stance is quite narrow. This may help him turn more, but I think he needs a wider base. Clubhead impact sounds good, for what its worth, it sounds like good contact - so I may assume he isnt hitting monster slices or hooks or too many thin or fat...but I maintain my 18 handicap guess. It will be fun to find out how far off I am, hahaha....

I think I've heard of that place :)

Good insights. I agree with your reviews of the ones I have tried, too. The Nike Power Distance Soft is $15 a dozen, and I agree a great ball not in the 'premium' category...good distance and some spin, if the course is wet, and the greens aren't running fast - a great choice - my 'sleeper' choice. Let me ask you Birdieman - ProV1x vs TP Black - do you find them very similar in spin? I play the ProV1x, as you do, and was curious? I see you said the distance was the same... Sounds like the $20 for the service was worth it for you, and ultimately that what matters. It may not be worth that to someone else, but you seem to have benefitted from it, and have shared the knowledge - so thank you!

Should I change my swing from stack & tilt?
Magnus replied to Fredguay642's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
My adivice - stick to one swing and try to engrain it. Its hard enough to get one swing right. Pick one, and give it an honest shot - in terms of overall play time, practice, and committment. -
Take a deep breath.......we've all been there, trust me. Use it as a learning experience - turn it into a positive. Remember the Nike commercial with Tiger and Earl? Noone will be stronger mentally than Tiger...his dad used to talk and move things and make noise in his backswing to teach him to focus... Don't let a guy get in your head - laugh at him - tell him your going over the trap!

You want to fill the distance gap so you can hit full shots, not have to feather that pw or swing from your heels with the sw. So - chart your yardages with your pw and sw, then try a 50*, 52*, 54*, 56*...etc and find out what works. 45 minutes at the range with some demo wedges will tell you the answers.

Help Me Decide : Irons decision
Magnus replied to rgoudy1975's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
I can vouch for the Rac Forged TP's from 2005. Switched from my ultra-forgiving x20s to these. Careful hitting shots in a simulator (especially a 2 iron) - it isnt the same as real life. Get those clubs (whatever you try) out and hit off grass and see. I have played everything from ultra game inproving Ping Eye 2's and x20's to MP33 blades and my current Rac Forged TP's. I echo the comments above - the very forgiving cb irons will improve your misses and help your scores, but the blades will punish your bad shots and make you a better ball striker. I think you realize that - so go get those blades or combos - try the rac forged tp's - got my set in my sig below for under $250 mint!!! Best of luck! -
Yes! And then pick the ball shavings out of the wedge.....hahaha

Need Driver Info ASAP (Tour Burner)
Magnus replied to Abs777's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
If your going to spend $299, you may want to take a few minutes and hit some different shafts and get fitted - otherwise you'll have a nice new club that won't do a thing for you. -
Amen to all of this.....it is said to play the stiffest shaft you can handle, stiffness gives you accuracy, more flex gives you distance - you want to hit the fairway.

YS-6+ vs Aldila VS Proto 65 for driver
Magnus replied to hrspear's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
In my experiece the YS-6 tends to baloon on me. It was in my 905R and D1. Tip softness maybe? I am in the process of 'finding' my shaft. I tried the Proto by you - it plays more rigid than the YS-6. I have found the UST 67g v2 to be a better fit for me - you may want to try that. That being said the YS-6 has to be one of those shafts everyone seems to be able to use. It may not be perfect, but it perfoms well. -
Well, If I was at the racetrack I would have made $2........hahaha Some CLUTCH putting, Padraig - WOW!!!
-
Need to keep a scorecard for all of this....hahaha, good stuff and I agree with some of them. I particularly like #'s 4, 5, 8, and 14. My top 5 are: 1 - Padraig Harrington - how about back to back majors? 2 - Sergio - love his power game, but his putter... not so nice... 3 - Goosen - steady, but can he make some putts? 4 - Furyk - can he step it up on Sunday? 5 - Mickelson - try hitting some fairways, good lord? and a top 10 for Anthony Kim (he's fun to watch)

Here's a sleeper for ya - Bobby Jones 3w. Love it.
